manifesto: to make your getting together with each other something different, someway more. not just music but all about the music; making you dance, making you stay out later. going for the magic of being right there in what’s happening, with no hype, nothing elitist, everyone invited. plus giving back and being involved in making creativity happen.

I’m a one man operation, with a million amazing people helping out, however many nights a week. I’m currently drafting an up-to-date thanks list, but for now, let me just say thanks to all the great old friends who have helped make all these shows happen over the years. You all have made the experience of these shows a more personal experience, and built what could just be a scene into a vibrant family. THANKS!

I’m always looking for more bands & acts & spectacles & curiosities to charge people money to see. if you have such a thing, write me with details and maybe we’ll work together. millions will be made.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

[ scroll down for the upcoming calendar and other details  ]

I have been laying low on the email / show booking front lately, apologies for not keeping in touch. Despite quiet on the New York shows side of things, much is hectic/frenetic here in the home office. Here’s a sampling of some of what we have been up to, in no order:

FESTIVAL NRMAL + MtyMx 2013 - a festival of music & art in Monterrey, Mexico - March 8-10, 2013
http://festivalnrmal.net/2013
The 4th annual installment of our festival in Monterrey, Mexico! Last year saw nearly 6000 attendees and 75+ acts/bands/djs in 6 locations across 10 stages! Pre-sales tickets are available at the above link for the exceptionally affordable price of $160 pesos (less than $14 USD). We will be adding a Ticketweb link soon to facilitate buying tickets in USA dollar denominated prices, and in English.

MARKET HOTEL PROJECT - a project to reopen a long-shuttered, beloved concert space / art space
http://markethotel.org
Construction has finally commenced! Opening date tbd. Nearly 2 1/2 years ago Market Hotel closed as an underground event space. A decision was made to fight to reopen this unique place and to relaunch with our legal ducks in order - but also to turn down commercial investors and instead make it work as a not-for-profit dedicated to the community (without using crowd sourcing). It has not been easy, nor glamorous, but after much struggle the project finally found its necessary funding roughly a year ago, and has spent the last 12 months navigating the permitting process to reopen with proper alcohol license, occupancy permit, permit for “assembly,” and other necessary paperwork. These things are not yet in hand, but our legal and financial pathway is finally in sight to begin construction to satisfy the requirements to get to those goals. Some may be surprised to hear that this project is alive - but rest assured: nearly every day we are working behind the scenes to make the reopening of Market Hotel a reality. This space will re-open not as some temple of “indie” whatever, but as a space dedicated to bringing the privileged concepts of all ages access and affordable tickets to many music genres. **ACTUALLY HAPPENING** seriously! Stay tuned.

OTRAS OBRAS - a new art gallery project in Tijuana, Mexico
http://otrasobras.mx
One month ago, LA-based artist/curator Michael Ray-Von and I opened Otras Obras, a new contemporary art space in Downtown Tijuana, less than one mile from the USA border. Otras Obras aims to present challenging work addressing questions of borders, class, currency, translation, and authority. Our inaugural exhibition featured a collaborative installation by Mexico City-artist Joaquín Segura & by New York-based artist Jesse Hlebo.

285 KENT AVE - an all ages performance studio space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
http://facebook.com/285kentave
285 KENT AVE is a collaboration between myself and Ric Leichtung to provide a large scale, all ages, affordable space for musical artists of many genres to present their work. Previous to 285’s current incarnation, the space was known as Paris/London/West Nile and hosted “new music” performances as well as served as a residence for many NYC art and music luminaries. For a period, the space also existed as “Bohemian Grove” and hosted progressive raves. My involvement with 285 KENT AVE began on Halloween 2010 and I’ve been running the space since January 2011, with collaborators like BabyCastles and John “Rambo”. Two years now! Some great shows have gone down at 285 KENT AVE and I’m really proud to be part what has become an important NYC block for live music and performance - along with our neighbors Death By Audio, Ran Tea House, Muze, and Glasslands.

SHOWPAPER - a biweekly print newspaper listing all ages music shows in the NYC area, and a full-color art print series
http://showpaper.org
Nearing our 150th issue, about to enter our 6th year of publication! I founded SHOWPAPER nearly 6 years ago with a dedicated group of volunteers. We envisioned the paper with several concepts in mind: as an homage to the photocopied punk show listings papers of the pre-internet days; as an alternative to the corporatization and impersonal-ization of underground scenes that has come with the ubiquitous use of the internet; -and- as a way to expose savvy young people to visual art / take a stab at introducing some underground energy to the establishment art world. About a year in, Joe Ahearn got invovled and has taken the reigns of managing SHOWPAPER day-to-day ever since. I’m proud that we’ve survived for so many years, and with unique projects along the way like the Showpaper 42nd Street Gallery, last summer’s free concerts in McCarren Park, and our ongoing newsbox projects “the Community Serviced” and “Brooklyn Shelf Life.” Always looking for volunteers!

STANHOPE CELLAR STUDIOS - an affordable rehearsal space facility in Bushwick, Brooklyn
email stanhopespot@gmail.com for availability
We offer cheap, $495 dollar private rooms in a modern, dry, safe facility with an elevator and heating/cooling/ventilation and onsite 24-hour security. The concept is to provide the cheapest private rooms in Brooklyn, in a month-to-month lease-free arrangement, where folks can practice in relative comfort, security, and peace - without having to shoulder an expensive lease shared with a bunch of less-responsible freeloader roommates. It’s been popular and is fully occupied.

AN AS-YET-TO-BE-NAMED “NEW MUSIC” PERFORMANCE SPACE + BAR IN THE BUSHWICK AREA
I have a new lease on a familiar space off the L train, with legal certificate-of-occupancy and other paperwork baked into the deal, at no cost to the space. This space will open as an all ages music venue for “new music” (aka noise, avant composition, deconstructed rock, etc) - with an onsite (licensed) bar for the grown ups. Doubles as a neighborhood bar on nights without performances, and a gallery. Separate gallery space within, to open at a later date.

The above are some of the major ongoing projects I’ve got going on. I’m excited to share them with you, by way of explaining why there are fewer shows I’m directly involved in. There are also a few more commercial, less creative projects that go on in the background, and above all else I am the proud father of an amazing 16-month-old baby boy. Life is good!

FYI - I book lots of shows, but so do lots of other people, so if you want to book a show & can’t get a response out of me, you should try contacting these other great NYC independent & ALL AGES showfolk below. I recommend perusing their links and their calendars to see if they’re the right fit for you, or just to see what’s going on (for the record, blindly mass emailing all of these people will not make you a lot of friends, and probably will cause people to NOT want to book you, word to the wise)
