Django Django at Knitting Factory in October (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Django Django

Along with Alt-J, one band that basically all of the UK loved this year was Django Django, and not for nothing, because their self titled debut really is excellent. They already visited our shores a few times this year, and they've just announced that they'll be returning in 2013 for a North American tour. That tour hits NYC on March 6 and 7 at Music Hall of Williamsburg. TIckets for both of those shows go on sale Friday (12/7) at noon.

Django Django have released more than half of their debut as singles, and have now released "Life's a Beach" as well on 10" with a new mix/edit, plus remixes by The Very Best and Steve Mason (of the Beta Band who have filial relations with DD) which you can stream below. You can watch its video over at Entertainment Weekly.

All tour dates are listed below, along with streams, and a couple other music videos.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at Bowery Ballroom in Nov (more by Lionel Bergeron)
Jon Spencer

As you may know by now, Norton Records suffered much damage during Hurricane Sandy, and they've been getting a good deal of support form the community to help them rebuild. Jonathan Toubin did a benefit show in November and Obits have one coming up in January. A week before the Obits show, you can catch another garage punk crew, Reigning Sound doing a Norton Records benefit at The Bell House on January 11 with The Swingin' Neckbreakers. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Speaking of Jonathan Toubin, two days after the Reigning Sound show, he'll be at The Bell House (1/13) to help another force in music damaged by Hurricane Sandy, WFMU. That show also features Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Relatives, Dot Wiggin, and Di Dionyso. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

As usual, Jonathan Toubin has many other NYC shows coming up.

For The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, that Bell House show is part of a US tour they'll be on in 2013. All dates on that tour are listed below.

Hospitality at Brooklyn Bowl, 8/31/2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Hospitality

Much like the Etsy's store, tech mag WIRED has a pop-up store during the holiday season (its eighth year) and theirs is located at 534 Broadway at Price St. in SoHo. In addition to featuring loads of the latest gear and gadgets, the WIRED store is also hosting events and live music. Tonight (12/6), Hospitality will play a free show and the event, which includes "beer, beverages, & light bites," goes from 7 - 10 PM. You do need to RSVP. As an extra incentive to get there early, the first 100 people through the door get a free "Moxie showerhead from KOHLER that streams music right into your shower." The WIRED store has a few other events but, apart from a "DIY workshop" on Saturday (12/8) they are all listed as "invite only" with no other details. Seems Scroogish to us.

If you can't swing by the WIRED store tonight, don't forget Hospitality will play Bowery Ballroom on January 10 with Household and tickets are still available. We're also giving a pair away and details are below, along with a stream of their new single, "Monkey."

A$AP Rocky at FFF Fest 2012 (more by Tim Griffin)
A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky appeared on BET's "106 & Park" earlier this week (12/3) to reveal his new video for his posse cut, "Fuckin' Problem," which features Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and 2 Chainz. On the show, he also revealed the cover art for his new album, Long.Live.A$AP, and announced that it will be out January 15, after much delay. You can watch the "Fuckin' Problem" video and check out the album art below.

As mentioned, Rocky will be touring with Rihanna and playing NYC on May 4 and 5 at Barclays Center (night 1 sold out, night 2 tickets on sale) but if you'd prefer not to see him opening for a huge pop star in a huge arena, you can catch opening for T.I. at Best Buy Theater on December 18. Rocky appears on TI's upcoming album, Trouble Man (which drops the day of the show), on the track, "Wildside," so maybe he'll come out to perform it with Tip at the show. Tickets for that one are still available.

As mentioned, T.I. recently dropped the Andre 3000-featuring track, "Sorry," off Trouble Man. If you missed it, you can stream that below, along with the A$AP Rocky video, cover art, and a list of updated dates.

Japandroids at Webster Hall - 12/4/12
Japandroids

Japandroids have been on tour for a while now in support of their great 2012 LP, Celebration Rock, and after coming to NYC for a sold out two-night run at Bowery Ballroom and MHOW over the summer, the band returned this week and made the move up to a two-night run at Webster Hall (12/4-5), the first night of which was sold out. Five months, almost four times the amount of audience members, and multiple top 10 rankings in major music press year-end lists later, not a thing has changed about Japandroids on stage. They still play like it's the last night of their lives, and continue to make positive interactions with the crowd, who respond by going nuts all night. The usual raised fists and push pits were there, and at the encouragement of Brian King, a bunch of people stage dived (something that didn't happen at Music Hall in Williamsburg back in June). Though at one point the crowd started a "Let's Go Rangers!" chant to which Brian responded with, "Why are you trying to antagonize me? I'm here to make community," and after tons of cheers and a few guitar riffs later, he added "By the way, Rangers suck, Canucks rule!" and went directly into the next song. The set included all of Celebration Rock, most of Post-Nothing, and the non-album single, "Art Czars," which they've been playing on this run.

The show began with an opening set from DIIV, who brought their usual sense of guitar line-y indie pop, atypical attire, and bashing around on stage. They delivered a solid set of material from their debut album, Oshin, which dropped this year, and has also earned itself a fair amount of year-end list spots. The crowd was tamer for DIIV than I've seen them in the past, but there was still enough head bopping from people up in front that it looked like they went over pretty well.

More pictures from night 1 (night 2 coming soon) below.

Frank OceanFrank Ocean

The Grammy Nominations were just announced. At this point it should be no surprise that this year's list contains names like Jack White, The Black Keys, Gotye, Adele, Foster the People, Florence and the Machine, M.I.A. (she got nominated for a video), and "fun" alongside all the major pop stars. And I guess Bjork is a given in the "Alternative Music Album" category any time she comes out with an album (this is like her 12th or 13th nomination).

Mumford and Sons are naturally on there along with fellow rising pop folk band The Lumineers. Indie Grammy pioneers Arcade Fire also snuck in there again for "Best Song Written For Visual Media."

EDM is huger than ever so of course hot EDM artists like Skrillex, Deadmau5, Diplo, AVICII, Swedish House Mafia, and Steve Aoki are well represnted.

Classics and current stadium artists that were busy in 2012 all got their nods too: Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Kanye West, etc. (though Bieber and Nicki Minaj got snubbed).

Most funny is probably the metal category which is as out of touch as ever with Anthrax competing against Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Marilyn Manson (what year is it again?).

Personally, real opinions of the Grammys overall, I'm excited to see Frank Ocean SIX TIMES, Miguel FIVE TIMES, Alabama Shakes THREE TIMES, and I'm glad they didn't forget about Fiona Apple who is up for "Best Alternative Music Album" against Bjork, Gotye (one of three nominations), M83, and Tom Waits (who has won in the past).

The Grammys air February 10, 2013 on CBS. Check out the full list of nominations, which also includes Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Hugh Masekela, Tenacious D, Jim Gaffigan, Jimmy Fallon, and Tegan and Sara, HERE.

His list includes his recent tour-mates Turbo Fruits, his old band Titus Andronicus (who headlined Webster Hall this week), and legends Neil Young & Crazy Horse (who played Barclays Center this week). Check it out in full below...

Big Boi

We recently pointed out that Big Boi will be in NYC to play a semi-private show at SOB's. We more recently updated that post with news of a TV appearance:

Big Boi will stop by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Friday (12/7) to perform "Mama Told Me" with Little Dragon, who were initially supposed to guest on the song's recording, but were replaced on the album by Kelly Rowland.
Now we find out, via mfc (and the flyer above), that Big Boi will be playing the Studio at Webster Hall Saturday (12/8). Tickets will be available at 8pm TODAY (12/5).
