Happy 25th anniversary to Bob Knight, the chair man

8:23 AM Tue, Feb 23, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

I didn't get to watch Big Monday on ESPN last night as I was wrapped up in the Winter Olympics and the Mavericks-Pacers.

Did I miss a Brent Musburger or Bob Knight reference during the Oklahoma-Kansas game to one of college basketball's seminal moments that occurred 25 years ago today? Surely, you remember this:

USA-Canada Olympic Hockey set Canadian TV record!!!

4:32 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

It was bigger than big north of the border. It was the most-watched sports program in Canadian history. Let me repeat: It was the most-watched sports program in Canadian history.

Here's the news release from our Canadian friends:

Last night's CAN/USA Men's Hockey game delivered winning ratings for Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium with an average audience of 10.6 million viewers. With a larger audience than the Salt Lake City 2002 gold medal game featuring the same two teams (10.3 million), last night's game now becomes the most-watched sports program on record in Canadian television history. Peaking at 13 million viewers, the game was watched in part by nearly two in three Canadians, or 21.5 million viewers (64.3% of the Canadian population). A total of 9.48 million viewers watched on CTV alone, the biggest audience yet for any event at Vancouver 2010, including the Opening Ceremony (8.95 million), while 1.08 million watched on V. The game contributed to the highest daily reach yet, with 28 million Canadians watching some Winter Games coverage yesterday on Consortium platforms. After Day 10, 97.6% of the population - or 32.69 million Canadians - have engaged with Vancouver 2010 coverage, according to Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium's CUME index.

Olympics: Ice Dancing 23.3 - Ice Hockey 8.2

3:41 PM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

Maybe it's time to load up the truck and head north. What kind of country is this or what?

NBC's average viewership figures for Sunday night read thusly:
For the amazingly wonderful USA-Canada hockey game on MSNBC: 8.2 million viewers.
For live ice dancing and taped skiing on NBC: 23.3 million viewers.

In ratingspeak: Ice Hockey 4.3; Ice Dancing et al: 13.2.

You think that would happen in Canada?

I will hold my tongue and not advise the NHL to incorporate ice dancing into its games as it has the dastardly shootout. Beside, who would lead Steve Ott or Brenden Morrow?

Olympic hockey: USA 5, Canada 3

10:05 AM Mon, Feb 22, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

It was live and in color on cable's MSNBC while NBC was showing taped skiing, skating and ice dancing. I'm not sure why anyone would really complain about the game on cable. MSNBC is available in 92 million homes about 6 million less than ESPN. We all know that hockey is a cable sport.

I have Verizon Fios, which means I got to see the game in HD, which many others did not. That's the only knock.

On the other hand, the beauty of the MSNBC telecast was the sparsity of commercials. The game felt like a sprint from start to finish. And if you ever had any doubt about the genius of Mike Emrick's play-by-play, I'm sure there can be no doubt this morning.

Winter Olympics smashes American Idol streak

9:07 AM Thu, Feb 18, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

American Idol's 222-episode winning streak that was six years in the making appears to have come to a crashing halt, according to the early returns.

NBC's coverage of the Vancouver Games scored a 19.8 from in the 8 pm hour in major market overnight ratings for Wednesday. Idol earned a 12.3. Locally, Channel 5's Olympics topped Idol in the 8-9 hour as well.

Where is Paula Abdul when you need her?

For the night, the Olympics, with its packaged coverage that included Lindsey Vonn's taped gold medal downhill, NBC scored a 19.3 major market rating.

On the corresponding night four years ago in Turin, Idol trounced the Olympics -- 17.6 to 10.7.

On Tiger Woods' invitation only non-press conference

7:53 AM Thu, Feb 18, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

It's coming Friday and the if he is going to read a statement while not answering questions -- then I have a question. "If you are media member invited to attend to be nothing more than a prop, what does it do for your credibility if you go?"

The orchestration of this event reminds of the Masters pulling strings annually in Augusta. Or maybe a Kim Jong-il media event in North Korea.

NBC's Olympics: Packaging...Packaging...Packaging

8:49 AM Wed, Feb 17, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

The Vancouver Olympics are being broadcast live except when they are not. When NBC Sports czar was still a Yalie, he must have gotten some advice from a successful alum: "Package for prime time."

Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn, NBC's designated diva of the Winter Games, is scheduled to do her thing soon after her events starts at 1 pm. NBC, however, will delay showing the footage until prime time for maximum exposure.

I know a lot of people will be bellyaching about this injustice and similar acts by NBC designed to boost ratings. But does it really matter? How many folks ever hear of Vonn before these Games? Skiing isn't exactly a TV staple. Now we can''t live if e don't see Vonn live. Still, the cries of injustice will be heard across the country. To that, I say, "Chill, it's only the Winter Olympics."

Coaching the Cowboys: Tom Landry pitched a credit card; Jimmy Johnson is into male enhancement; What will Wade Phillips be selling when his coaching days are done?

8:08 AM Wed, Feb 17, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

Yikes! I'm glad there was no post-game male enhancement testing after SBs 27 and 28. I'm thinking Tom Landry would have turned down JJ's latest pitchman gig.

TNT in Dallas

Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

Actually had this conversation with a TNT staffer last night.

Me: Where are you staying in Dallas?

TNTer: Some place called The Mansion?

Me: You're kidding.

TNTer (tongue in cheek): Is it nice?

Me: I think it beats a Red Roof Inn,

TNTer: The beauty of double revenue streams.

Super Bowl 44: Most watched program in U.S. television history!

1:29 PM Mon, Feb 08, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

CBS's coverage of the Saints-Colts averaged 106.5 million viewers. That pushed the 1983 finale of M*A*S*H, which ran 2.5 hours, to second place with only 106 million viewers.

Last year's Steelers-Cardinals Super Bowl drops to third with 98.7 million.

About 153.4 million folks watched at lease a smidge of the game compared to 151.6 million last year.

The national rating was a 45.0, the highest in 14 years. The Cowboys-Steelers in Super Bowl 30 averaged a 46.0 rating. Last year's Super Bowl earned a 42.0.

Yes, the Saints-Colts was a compelling matchup and that absolutely helped attract the huge audience. Don't underestimate, however, the power of crummy weather up and down the East Coast. The highest rated Super Bowl ever was No. 16 between the 49ers-Bengals. That too was played a day with lousy weather in the East and Midwest.

Michael Irvin should resurface today as Emmitt Smith enters HOF

8:28 AM Sat, Feb 06, 2010 |
Barry Horn/Reporter   E-mail   News tips

NFL Network says he will be on as scheduled on Saturday and Sunday.

Here's the official statement from the network:

"We are aware that a civil lawsuit was filed. Our security department is looking into the allegations. According to Michael's lawyer, the accusations are 'totally untrue.'

He will be on-air this weekend."

Just like old times. Emmitt Smith quietly goes about his business while Michael Irvin is caught up in a swirl of controversy.
