NX35: Flaming Lips deets out, sked almost done

Thumbnail image for nx35splash.jpg

Well, the NX35 blog is nothing if not communicative. Seems like we get near-daily updates with bands added to the bill and news on Denton acts. Today's entry (not counting an announcement that DJ Momjeans a.k.a. Danny Masterson has been added to the bill) pertains the flagship performance of this year's fest, the Midlake/Flaming Lips outdoor gig on March 13. It's been moved from just off the Square to the North Texas Fairgrounds. Crowd control and other matters are made much easier in that space, one would think. Read the NX35 entry for more details. And keep checking that site this afternoon for an updated, full schedule. It's never too early to draw up your plan of attack.

New York, NY - Sarah Jaffe is thrilled to announce a string of US tour dates supporting Norah Jones this March! This amazing opportunity came about after Norah Jones crossed paths with Sarah in Switzerland while she was opening up for Midlake and reached out to her about coming on the road for some Stateside dates in March.

Produced by John Congleton (Polyphonic Spree, Explosions in the Sky), the new album showcases what an incredible talent this 23 year-old singer/songwriter from Denton, TX is. Where in the world ...?

sushiworld.JPG

Hmmm, there's a tambourine, an orange slice, sake and kimchi all in one photo -- where on Earth would all these things come together?! Why, Sushi World, that's where.

The Korean-managed (that's where the kimchi comes in) restaurant near West End specializes in sushi, and on this recent evening, the generous owners rolled out quite the spread for me to try: miso soup, four kinds of rolls, a boatload of tempura shrimp and veggies, dumplings and dessert. Whew! It was all pretty delish, and I'm really picky about my sushi. So I kept to the "safer" options, with cooked components, and avoided the raw sashimi and nigiri.

The congenial elderly manager at Sushi World has quite the storied, lauded history. He's earned kudos and certificates of honor from the U.S. Congress and the Korean Marines ... and he wasn't afraid to show them to me. At my table. At length. A tad overkill-y, but it was cute.

One of the fun features of the bar is the karaoke dining room. Yes, you'll have to try not to giggle through the melodramatic movie scenes that play on the flat-screen while you sing, but it's part of the kitschy charm of the place. Oh, and did I mention it's open 24 hours?!

Pregnant teen stories: More dramatic with bluegrass

Thumbnail image for Photo by Jason Janik

I saw it in a tweet last week and now it's official: MTV will use some songs by local duo the O's in its reality show 16 and Pregnant. From an Idol Records press release:

"The season 2 premiere of MTV's Hit show 16 and Pregnant debuts tonight at 9:00 PM Central on MTV and will feature 3 songs from The O's debut Idol release We Are The O's in it, including 'You've Got Your Heart', 'Don't Waste Your Day'; & 'One Way Ticket'. MTV will also ID the songs in the episode."

MTV's used a lot of local bands' music in its shows, but never have I seen a pairing of music and subject this strange. I think I'll have to DVR that ish. Although, the show would be a lot better if Taylor Young and John Pedigo were brought on to offer the teens advice.

Update on Bacy's

Thumbnail image for bacys2.JPG

In a recent post on this blog, I enthused about the renovation of the old Purgatory into Bacy's. And while the building's transformation is impressive, after visiting during All-Star Weekend, I realized that several things I was told to expect of the lounge hadn't yet come to fruition.

For example, as I understood it, Bacy's was to have live music and jazz and big-band tunes, but as of this past weekend, the music pumping through the speakers was more of the rump-shaking than toe-tapping variety. Which is fine -- several of the DJs were fabulous! But I was also told to expect a more mature and mellow crowd than that which had been frequenting Purgatory. But this past weekend, I saw a lot of what appeared to be the same old rowdy crowd that used to line up around the building every weekend last year.

Having said all that, I have to add that Bacy's is merely a week or two old -- that combined with the flood of out-of-towners for All-Star Weekend mean that I can't really draw conclusions yet about what Bacy's will be like in, say, two months. No one can. It's early, and the amenities and events I listed before could very well still happen. But I would give the club a chance to find its groove and hopefully reach the success the new owners want it to.

NBA All-Star Weekend: Party recap

Torii.JPG

Saturday night turned out to be a one-venue proposition. Angels center fielder Torii Hunter, who lives in DFW in the off-season, hosted a party at Eddie Deen's Ranch, just south of downtown. I hung out in a Macallan-sponsored VIP area, where finger foods and drinks flowed freely (hello, lemon drop!). Obviously, it was hard to leave this event. And with the ranch done up like an ultralounge with dance music thumping and sleek, comfy sofas to sink into, it made planting oneself for a few hours the best course of action. Alas, there weren't any celeb sightings here.

Bacys.JPG

On Sunday night, it was back to Bacy's (above) for an Allen Iverson/Birdman bash, but the celebs didn't show up until the after-party they were hosting.

Over in Uptown, Common took the stage at ghostbar for a set that dabbled in his older and newer hits. A nightlife scout who was there reports that the show was fantastic and not at all crowded -- she was so close to the stage that Common high-fived her. Sweet! Also in attendance at the 944 magazine-hosted affair were Floetry alumna Marsha Ambrosius and Doug E. Fresh.

If the traffic was any indication, most folks stayed in Sunday night after the All-Star game they, like me, were probably all partied out ... up next: Super Bowl weekend party madness. Stay tuned ...

NBA Celebrity Goodness

You'll get to see some NBA All-Star celebrity party fun in the next issue of Quick this Thursday, thanks to a visit to the Palladium Ballroom on Friday night. In the meantime, I thought you'd want to do a little more celebrity sighting. Saturday night saw more celebs than you could count at the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, held at the American Airlines Center.

Seriously! I stopped counting and snapping pics, because everywhere I turned was another famous face. Shaq, Spike Lee, Paul Simon, Chris Tucker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jay-Z, Jamie Foxx, Michael Rapaport, Emmitt Smith, Mary J. Blige, Dwyane Wade, Mario Lopez and some obvious faces like Mark Cuban and Dirk Nowitzki (you'd kind of expect to see Mark and Dirk at a Dallas-based NBA event, right?).

I saw a whole lot more celebs throughout the night, but eventually lost track of all the names and faces. Here are a few photos, paparazzi style:

NBA All-Star Weekend: Party recap and previews

IMG_3293.JPG

Above is a view of the scene outside the Palladium last night, where Diddy held his All-Star Weekend bash. What you can't see is the absolute chaos that was involved in getting inside the building. There were about four levels of strict security we had to get through -- we were handled with a wand, carded, bracelet'ed, queried before we even stepped to the door.

Oh, and let me rewind -- since Dallas cops were blocking off Lamar St., patrons had to park either on the other side of the South Side on Lamar complex or near Eddie Deen's Ranch, by the Convention Center and walk to the venue. If you could only hear the whining and moaning of all the girls in heels, stumbling to the front door. Yeah, I was one of 'em.

Once I got inside, around 12:45, the place was elbow-to-elbow ... with no Diddy in sight. He wasn't even in the building. Figures. There were, however, other celebs crammed on to the stage, none of whom I got to mingle with. Whatevs, my guest and I hightailed it back to Bacy's, where we'd seen and been seen several hours earlier.

The Main Street club was hoppin', with bass-heavy music pumping through the speakers and people dancing wherever they could find a space. Late in the evening Shaquille O'Neal rolled in, emerging from a giant vehicle called The Vault. Huge! Big-screen hottie Vivica A. Fox stopped by for a spell, too.

What's the hot ticket tonight? There're three: Snoop performing at the Boardroom at 10 p.m.; actress Taraji P. Henson and footballer T.O. at Wish UItralounge; and MTV's Mixtape party at Plush, featuring Three-6 Mafia and local fellas Play n Skillz.

Moi? I'll be at a Torii Hunter/Charles Barkley-starring party at Eddie Deen's, then hitting up Bacy's again and possibly the Snoop show.

Better read this one fast. I don't have much time. Death's caught my scent; hell hound's on my trail. This world is dark and cold -- I know we're all done for. Damn, this shut-in snow-day is getting to me. Either that, or these two new tracks from Dallas death metal punx Human Error (above) are rotting my brain (in the best way possible).

Short on time and pleasantries, Human Error's new songs "Lost" and "Plaguespreader" savage eardrums in little more than a minute apiece. And since the tunes come from its forthcoming debut, eight-song 7-inch, "Beyond The Wasteland" (due this spring on Withdrawal Records), these songs are foreboding signs of things to come. Warning: Human Error's future 7-inch may cause whiplash and/or an urge to buy more Agnostic Front and Entombed records.

An ode to dropping out of society, a paean to nonconformity, "Lost" is, like, so totally punk. But the statements are sincere; the one-two punch of thundering backbeats and driving, pistol whipping guitars prove that. The formula may seem simple, but Human Error makes every harrowing second count. These guys cram more jaw-dropping tech-wizardry into their grinding guitar rushes than most bands achieve on an entire album. Human Error has all the smarts of the kid with the best grades in calculus, and all of the class of the kids who were too busy huffing paint to care about it.

But for all their talent, the band isn't interested in a pissing contest. Human Error is all about attitude. Each riff and every snarl is packed with distinct personality. By the end when the bridge hits, slowing things down to a steady, grating churn, the drums usher in a mind-melting breakdown, accented with a pinch harmonic that could conjure Satan. When singer Josh foams at the mouth, "I will not let my life be wasted/ to a world I've never stepped a real foot in", he sounds justified in his anger.

Drug Mountain, S/T

Have you ever been so stoned listening to the Stooges' classic Fun House that you were convinced you'd found the sound for your new band in the howling paranoia of "L.A. Blues"? Drug Mountain's been there, man. They've taken many a trip and returned all the wiser/wearier. That much is evidenced on the Fort Worth ensemble's debut release, a self-titled, one-sided 12-inch album. The band tapped noise rock icon/enemy of the U.S. Postal Service Steve Albini (Big Black/Shellac) to produce and record. In the lair of Albini's Electrical Audio studio last summer in Chicago, Drug Mountain's writhing beast was captured in all its ghastly glory.

The LP rigidly defies accurate classification; disarray is the only element that binds. Everything's a mesmerizing mess. Tracks thrive on jarring juxtapositions; like making a diptych with Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollock. Drug Mountain paints with slippery, grotesque colors, and then basks like hogs in the resulting filth. Atonal and wonderfully cacophonous, the group pits dueling, vulgar saxophones against precise blasts of schizophrenic drumming and taunting, textural guitars like some sick cult ritual. The deathblow bass slides around like a panicking elephant on the deck of the Fitzcarraldo. The buried, blindly angry vocals stumble in to argue, screaming louder and louder just to get their points across. Songs range from mystifying wastelands of pummeling polyrhythms and rude, raving-like-a-drunk saxophones to grinding -- oddly danceable -- art-punk lash-outs.

Utterly elusive, but unforgettable, the whole record feels like blacking out. The seven -- at least I think it's seven -- songs are over before you can taste what just hit you. The silk-screened album art by local artist -- and band member -- Nevada Hill looks like it could double as a secret portal to Hell. This is the dirty little record you hide and nourish like a closet addiction. Limited to a run of 100, snatch one up quick. Get dirty.

In other news:

- Dallas grind lords Kill The Client recently inked a record deal with the highly influential metal label Relapse. The band has quite a few high-profile local shows coming up with touring acts like Misery Index, Magrudergrind, Phobia, Despise You, Sh*tstorm, and more. Look for the band during SXSW at the Relapse showcase on March 17 in Austin.

- Contrary to some rumors, Dallas psyche-metal act Vorvadoss has not broken up. The band recently parted ways with two members, but has decided to continue on as a four-piece. Vorvadoss promises to scrap its current music, instead choosing to write entirely new material.

The Weekly Dish

What: Crusted lamb chop and filet mignon

Where: Patry's Restaurant, 4601 W. Lovers Lane

Delicious thoughts: I'm pretty picky about my French cuisine, but Patry's gets all the classics just right. The escargots are appropriately fresh and herb-y, but not too salty. The French bread is crisp on the outside but has the perfect amount of give when you sink your teeth into it. And the wines -- oh, the wines. Quelle selection.

At a recent tasting dinner, this sampling of meat came a close second to the escargots. An herb-crusted lamb chop and a peppery pan-seared filet mignon arrived with lovely pink centers and velvety sauces, all alongside a swirl of pureed potatoes (that's mashed taters to the non-French). The meat was fork-tender and intensely flavorful -- I don't know which I loved better. Actually, I preferred the lamb and saved it for last, but the filet filled me up so much, I had to pass the lamb on to my companion. Rats!

All-Star parties + snow = ???

Thumbnail image for snow.JPG

This is the view from a window in my office -- treacherous-looking, eh? This blast of wintry weather picked the worst time to land, if you're a clubhopper -- right smack during NBA All-Star Weekend and all its parties! What of all the celebrity kick-off events that are scheduled for tonight? Amid all this snowfall (and eventual icing-over), even I'm reconsidering my plan to attend a Dwyane Wade-hosted bash. Yeah, it's that serious.

No matter -- there's still dozens of parties to hit up all weekend. Keep an eye on this blog for a daily list of each day's parties. And check out the posts from my nightly exploits on the scene, in case you want to veg at home and party vicariously through me. Here's hoping I can score a photo with Diddy at his Palladium Ballroom party tomorrow night. Stay tuned ...

Show canceled tonight, duh

reckless.jpgThe Texas country band Reckless Kelly has canceled tonight's show at HOB because of weather:

The new date for this show will be Wednesday, March 17. Tickets purchased for the February 11 show will be honored at the March 17 show. For ticket buyers who are unable to attend the new show date, refunds are available at the point of purchase.

No word on the status of the many All-Star events planned for tonight. If you plan on calling off your activities because of the weather, there are a couple of things you can do with your free time: 1) Start planning your NX35 schedule. 2) Start planning your SXSW schedule. 3) Watch Neon Indian perform on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Whatever you do, stay warm ...

Setlist: Motion City Soundtrack at Prophet Bar

motioncitysoundtrack.jpgA Motion City Soundtrack show is akin to group therapy.

You get a large number of people together in one room, everyone lets out some emotions and, at the end of the night, you hope the mass goes home in a better state of mind.

Wednesday night at the Prophet Bar, MCS delivered a 65-minute set of songs from the band's four albums and pulled heavily from its recent release, My Dinosaur Life.

Taking the stage to a funk-induced "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was), the five-piece pop/punk rock band that formed in Minneapolis some 12 years ago blistered through songs and kept the audience moving and singing throughout the night.

From songs about breaking up ("Broken Heart"), dealing with exes ("When 'You're' Around") and putting bros first ("@!#?@!") to anthemic feel-better tunes ("Even If It Kills Me"), the sing-a-longs and call and responses resonated.

While he's written about two main subjects in his life - break ups and kicking addictive habits (read: drugs, alcohol) - frontman and vocalist Justin Pierre still manages to take a woe-is-me song and make it catchy.

Even the radio-friendly "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" took a break up and spun it around. Instead of wallowing in what was, Pierre looks to what will be. While most of Pierre's lyrics focus around "I-me-my" statements, when you hear a raucous crowd sing "I'm taking an online course/I'm learning to speak Japanese" back to him, you know everyone singing has gone through a heart-breaking moment in their life, but eventually found an outlet for pain and suffering.

When he wasn't playing guitar, Pierre played with his poofed-up hair, interacted with the audience and had a matching hand gesture for every lyric. Bassist Matthew Taylor backed up Pierre with soothing backing vocals once second and sharp vocal bursts the next while still managing to shake the club with his low-frequency basslines.

Keyboardist and moog player Jesse Johnson added his own touch to every song. Whether it was a simple melodic piano lead or a screeching background noise, Johnson stayed active and kept the crowd moving with his stage antics. His true moment to shine came during "Last Night" where he created a building wall of distorted-yet-controlled sound throughout the song.

The true star of the night, however, was drummer Tony Thaxton. From his tight snaps on the snare to his drum fills, the percussionist added a little something special to each song. From backing vocals on "Her Words Destroyed My Universe" to his ability to crash a cymbal, catch it and silence it, Thaxton proved why fans clapped along to the beat of his kick drum every chance they got.
