Your Official Trap Game Warning

Looking at the Ex-Pats poll on how the Hogs will finish the hoops campaign, it is apparent that a majority of voters think the Hogs will win at least two of the remaining four games.  I expect that means most voters think the Hogs will roll right over Wednesday night's opponents, the hapless LSU Tigers, who are winless in SEC play, and who were beaten like baby seals at Walton in a 35-point romp by the Hogs.  Yep, this looks like a sure-fire, write-it-down, don't even need to play it, W for the Pigs.  Right?  Let's move on to Vandy.

Not so fast, faithful.  This game has me worried; really worried.  And here are a few reasons why, if the Hogs don't stay laser focused, they could be in a for a rude, and season altering, surprise:

Public Service Announcement: How to Get Rich with the Razorbacks

As part of our ongoing service to our fellow Razorback fans, we here at Arkansas Expats, Inc are dedicated to sharing any and all opportunities to combine your love for the Hogs with risky moneymaking schemes. So, when I read that the odds on the 2011 BCS Championship had been posted, I had to pass that along.

The online betting site bodog.com has posted their 2011 odds, and Arkansas comes in at 30:1. That's pretty far behind frontrunners like Alabama (7:2) or Ohio State (13:2), but is certainly a lot higher than we've been over the past few years.

Being the consummate high-roller that I am, I've personally placed a $50,000 bet on the Razorbacks to win it all. Anyone who wants a ride on my yacht this time next year should speak up now.

A screenshot of Arkansas and a bunch of other teams on the Bodog board is after the jump:

Hogs come in at No. 6. The results are identical to our ballot from Nos. 1 through 8. And shockingly, as they are on our ballot, the Tigers of LSU are in last place in the poll results.

Special Chris Low Hodge Podge

A lot of you are probably already regular readers of Chris Low's SEC blog over on ESPN.com, but in case you don't check his site often, he's posted lots of great Razorback-related content recently. Here's a sampling:

* Bobby Petrino is notorious for not particularly loving the interview process or the media in general, so when he sits down for some "kicking it" with Low, it's definitely worth reading. Lots of good stuff for his expectations for next year (among other things) in this post.

* Somewhat amazingly, spring practice is only a few weeks away (or in LSU's case, less than one week away) and Low breaks down the things to watch for Arkansas and the rest of the SEC West.

* Lots of marquee players have moved on from the SEC, so Low takes a look at the conference next year and pegs the Razorbacks as one of the "new faces" who could potentially make some noise in the new competitive environment. If you need another reason to look forward to next fall, he's bullish on the Hogs.

* This is old news by Internet standards (i.e., it's from last week), but Low ranked Ryan Mallett as the 6th best player in the SEC last season. Worth a read, for sure.

*Special Bonus Non-Chris Low Item*

* AS360's Jim Harris shares some notes about Scotty Thurman's recent induction to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, and his post includes some fascinating tidbits about one of the all-time Razorback greats. For example, did you know Davor Rimacs was scheduled to start over Thurman in the famous 1995 Kentucky game? And, speaking of Thurman we should probably plug the in-depth (5 parts!) interview we did with him a little over year ago...if you missed it the first time around, here's part 1.

It's Raining Threes: Auburn 92, Arkansas 83

When they were compiling a 2-14 record in SEC play last year and an 8-11 start to this season, the Razorbacks were notorious for allowing their opponents to torch them from behind the three-point line. Tonight, that characteristic returned from its much-appreciated leave of absence to torpedo the Hogs' hopes of notching a rare victory in Auburn, Ala.

Tonight, the Tigers made 11 of their 19 three-point attempts and shot 61 percent from the field overall. Furthermore, they drained 76 percent of their 33 free-throw attempts.

Considering all of that, it's surprising that the game was as close as it was. But the Hogs didn't play all that terribly themselves, shooting 50 percent from the field, and rallying from a nine-point deficit to take a three-point lead in the latter stages of the second half.

All in all, a disappointing and frustrating loss, but one that's hardly surprising, given the difficulty of winning on the road in the SEC and given how closely Auburn played the Hogs in Fayetteville. Shake it off, folks.

With four games to play, the Razorbacks are tied for the lead in the SEC West. I think it's safe to say that no one reading this blog ever predicted that they would be in this position.

And honestly, I don't really care about the West crown. If it happens, great. But at this point, my goal is a winning conference record. That will be tough to accomplish - I'm not even putting Wednesday's game at LSU in the "automatic win" category - but these Hogs are tough.

I like their chances.

Confessions of a Lousy Gambler

Okay, confession time.  On Friday, January 15, right after the Hogs had come close but had lost to Mississippi State in Starkville, a co-worker, let's call him DH, came down the hall with a proposition.  "10-1 odds, I take the Hogs to win the SEC West.  I put up ten; if the Hogs win the SEC West you owe me a hundred. "

You're damn right I took the bet.  Actually, I jumped on it, sneering.  "This Hog team cannot even go .500 in conference, much less win the West."  Plus, I figured it was worth a hundred to see the Hogs out-perform all reasonable expectations.

In fairness, I think that DH would admit now his bet was based more on the overall crappiness of the SEC West than any perceived strength in the Hogs.   Still, the bet looked a lot better for me then than it does now. And it looked much, much better after Kentucky dismantled the Hogs.  That was total domination.  Make no mistake, Calipari could have won by 80 had he so desired.  Kentucky had a wide disparity in talent, better coaching, more stylish arm sleeves, and probably more comfortable and better fitting underwear.  Kentucky was the elite.  Arkansas was the Washington Generals.

So I was ready to get my ten bucks off DH.  He wasn't feeling good about it either, but he refused to give up, noting, again, that Kentucky was in the East, and all the Hogs had to do was win the West.  An excellent point, it turns out.
