Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.19.10

Lonnie Dean "Primo" McCurry RIP: Per the LAJ, McCurry passed away on Wednesday and played on the 1939 football team that went 9-1-1 and McCurry also spoke to the 2008 Texas Tech football team before the Texas game:

Lonnie was invited by Coach Mike Leach to give the 2008 football team a motivational speech before the biggest game in Tech history. As Tech defeated the University of Texas, the players and coaches felt Primo's inspirational words were a key factor in the upset.

McCurry also served his country in World War II and had a loving wife that passed away only a few weeks ago.  Rest in peace sir.

Sarcasm Alert:  This mornings DTN DD is riddled with sarcasm in certain places.  I have chosen not to utilize the sarcasm font [<sarc>enter text here</sarc>] but instead thought it would be more fun for you to guess where I'm being sarcastic, or maybe I'm not being sarcastic at all.

Opening Day:  It should be absolutely beautiful for opening day.  If you don't have a thing to do today, go see today's games.  P Chad Bettis is your starting pitcher for the year, a position he certainly deserves, and he was recently named to USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Watch List.  Congrats!

New Role for Bettis:  LAJ's George Watson talks with P Chad Bettis who will be making the change from dominant relief pitcher to starting pitcher this year:

"I think starting this year is what I want to do, for sure," Bettis said. "I have to prove myself and prove to everyone else by starting that I can come out and go eight or nine innings and then hand it to (new closer Jay Johnson) to get the win. Closing you have to come in with the mentality of having to get the first guy out and role from there. Starting you control how fast the pace of the game goes and all that."

High Hopes:  DT's Adam Coleman writes that the team has high hopes for this season and the team will be leaning on Seward County C.C. pitcher Bobby Doran to fill a starting role this year:

"I expect to step into a role where I can be a dominant pitcher in the Big 12," he said. "Coming here, really filling in behind Chad. Not just let him be the lone soldier out there competing. We have talent on the mound. We’re just going to go out there and compete and do what we do best."

Blaspehmy!  DT's Brett Wingarner (this video is really well done, as is almost everything the DT sports department puts out there) talks with P Chad Bettis and head coach Dan Spencer about this upcoming season.  I title this section "Blasphemy!" because head coach Dan Spencer has the audacity to talk about wanting to go to Omaha and win a national championship.  How dare he have such lofty goals!

Game Tomorrow
Texas Longhorns (20-6, 6-5) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-9, 4-7)
Time:  1:00 p.m.
Location: Lubbock, TX
Television:  ESPN
DTN Preview Tomorrow:  8:00 a.m. :: Open Game Day Thread:  12:00 p.m.

Needing Victory:  DT's Mike Graham writes that the men's basketball team needs a victory at home this Saturday against a slumping Texas Longhorn team. SF Mike Singletary talk about what the team needs to do tomorrow:

"Any time you can catch a team on a little losing skid, it’s kind of a good thing," he said. "But we know they’re going to come in here ready to play, they always do. So we’ve just got to be ready for them, play defense and do the things the coaches want us to do."

And PF Darko Cohadarevic says that the team played well the last time these teams met (without Darko who was suspended for the game and PF D`Walyn Roberts who was injured) and should try to accomplish the same goals:

"We’ve got to have pretty much the same game  plan we had in Austin," he said. "We saw they had a hard time guarding our motion offense, but we know we can’t post up much against their big men."

Uninformed Blogger Agrees with Homers:  ESPN's Heather Dinich (who is helping pick up the the slack after Tim Griffin's departure), who normally writes about the ACC, writes that she believes that the Texas Tech offense will essentially remain the same:

More balanced at Texas Tech doesn't mean the Red Raiders' offense will suddenly become a 50-50 split. More like Texas Tech will still look like Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders do have the personnel, though, to add a few extra carries per game. And they certainly could afford to. Last year, Texas Tech was 115th in the country in rushing offense, averaging 84 yards per game. They were No. 2 in the country in passing offense, at 386.77 yards per game. The Red Raiders averaged 24.5 carries per game compared to 51.5 pass attempts per game. You can expect a slight shift in those numbers, but not a dramatic change.

Don't you see?  Even Dinich knows that the offense is going to remain the same and she just started blogging about Texas Tech this week.  Everyone needs to relax.

Photo Ops:  This is unacceptable.  It's been well chronicled that head coach Tommy Tuberville is out meeting people, talking about championships (Tubs should know better than to have goals and aspirations, i.e. see comment about baseball head coach Dan Spencer), shaking hands, and meeting with alumni.  For shame.

With that being said, there are a couple of photo galleries on the official site, which includes some photos of Tubs (that honestly make me giggle) in and around the Texas Tech campus, as well as Tubs and some of his staff (which includes Sonny Cumbie and another assistant coach that I don't initially recognize) meeting with a local fire station.  Also there's a photo gallery of some of pre-spring workouts

My initial impressions:  Everyone's pants are too long except for S&CC Joe Walker; RB coach Chad Scott looks like he's 12; and DC James Willis could whip my rear with one hand tied behind his back.

TUBERVILLE INTERVIEW: "Scotty Young may play Football and Baseball for Tech".

Coach Tuberville was interviewed this morning on 104.3 and stated that he has met with Tech's Baseball Staff to discuss the possibilty of Scotty Young playing both sports.

Also mentioned in the interview was the fact the the entire football weight room is being completly re-done. The focus going forward will be on free-weights and power lifts, and most equipment will be replaced.

Coach also provided some personal tid bits such as his favorite Lubbock eatery thus far is Cagels Steak House, his favorite movies are westerns, and his favorite music is country and western. This is fitting because according to coach Tuberville his best friend is the former head of Sony Music Nashville. Along those lines, Coach Tuberville mentioned he is working with those contacts to arrange some exciting appearances for the singing of the National Anthem.

On the football front, the only signifigant quote from coach was, "we are not here to fix anything, but we are here to improve it. If there wasn't any room for improvement, we would have a championship."

Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.18.10

A Little Tired:  I went to the Mavs game last night and so I'm a little tired this morning.  Despite my light posting the last two days, I'll make it up to you tomorrow where we'll start voting on the DTN t-shirts.  To reiterate, we'll probably choose 3 or 4 (this is wholly dependent on if you guys and gals get bored with the process) so that we have some t-shirts ready for the Red-Black Spring Game.

And yes, I'm hopeful that we can make the Red-Black Spring Game and official DTN event, which means that when we get a little closer to the April 17th, we'll see if we can designate a place to meet and subsequently drink prior to the football game and then maybe we'll head on over to the baseball game or some other place.

Roberson Possible: LAJ's Courtney Linehan reports that PG John Roberson may play on Saturday after injuring his ribs on Tuesday.  The focus of Linehan's article however is from PF Darko Cohadarevic who had this to say about the team's play against Baylor:

"It looked like we didn’t want to play, we didn’t want to be on the court," forward Darko Cohadarevic said. "That should never happen. If we had just stayed in the game, stayed focused, it’d be a totally different story."

Snip.

"It’s sad when you have a coaching staff with more passion for the game of basketball than the players," Cohadarevic said. "You can see from the body language of the players and the coaches, you can see the difference. They’re fighting. They want to win. We’re sitting like we already lost and there’s still 15 minutes to go, 10 minutes to go."

This is too easy and I have to ask why there is a disconnect between the coaches' passion and the players' performance on the court.  I'm sure that's not what Cohadarevic is trying to imply, but it certainly made me think that if there is a disconnect, especially with only a few games to play on the year, what's the frame of mind of this team?  I read the comments yesterday and I'm also of the opinion that PK might deserve one more year, but I just don't see how this team is able to compete on a high level when it will lose 7 players after the 2011 season, especially when those 7 players are probably going to play 90% of the minutes in 2011.

First Pitch Tomorrow:  That's right, the first pitch to the baseball season starts tomorrow and the Red Raiders open up at home with the Red Raider Classic and 4 games against Jacksonville St. and Michigan.  For those of you who haven't been around for the full year, baseball is the toughest sport for me to cover living in the DFW area because Big 12 baseball is rarely on television.  I try to update the table above and the starters as well as link to the boxscore after each game, but it's really tough to give any real impressions on the baseball team since I won't get to watch them play very much.  Nevertheless, I trudge forward.

For those of you who follow baseball closely, the official site has updated their game-day page and it's worth checking out if you want to follow the games closely.

The weather should be tremendous for baseball over the next few days and if you've never been to a baseball game I highly recommend it.  Not only that, if you have the opportunity to watch Chad Bettis this year, you should take the opportunity because he's going to be a major league pitcher in short order.

Tubs to Make Appearance:  Head coach Tommy Tuberville will throw out the first pitch tomorrow and sign autographs.

Spring Chatter: ESPN's Mark Schlabach looks at the team needs for all of the Big 12 teams (Again, I do not envy any writer that would have to write "fairly" about all Big 12 teams.  If you think it's bad for Texas Tech then consider the plight of Iowa St. or Colorado.).  Schlabach writes that the three areas of concern are quarterback, offensive line and defensive line.  I also think that Schlabach's editors added a sentence to the offensive line that should have been on the defensive line.  Honestly, I'm not concerned at all about the quarterback and consider this to be one of the safest positions on the team.  Plenty of depth, two senior starters, etc.  Replacing 3 starters on the offensive line is a concern, but lots of those back-ups played quite a bit last year due to injuries.  My biggest concern is the defensive line and how quickly the team adjusts to the coaching changes, both offensively and defensively.

Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 02.17.10

Result :: Loss : 70-88 : SB Nation Box Score
Record :: 16-9, 4-7
Big 12 Standings :: 9th
Up Next :: 02/20/2010 : Texas Longhorns : 20-5, 6-4

Sigh:  It's a talent problem. That's the difference between being a successful basketball program and not.  And it's frustrating for me personally because I'm a fan of Pat Knight and I want him and Texas Tech to have success, but I'm starting to lose faith.  Last night's game was a microcosm of what's wrong with Texas Tech in that Baylor simply had better athletes and better basketball players.  Texas Tech has talented basketball players, but the problem is that most of the rest of the Big 12 has better and more talented basketball players.  Mike Singletary is a good basketball player, but there's no way in hell he can compete athletically with a majority of the players he's matched up against.  He's either too small to guard true small forwards, too slow to guard shooting guards and he's not tall enough to finish inside and must rely on getting foul calls in order to be effective.  And this probably sounds like I'm picking on Singletary, but the truth is that you could say the same thing about every starter for Texas Tech versus every starter for Baylor (maybe sans Lomers).

How about this one statistic:  Texas Tech 1 block; Baylor 11 blocks.

There may not be a statistic more indicative of athletic ability more so than blocks and it's incredibly evident that other than D`walyn Roberts, this team really lacks elite athleticism.

So back to Pat Knight and the crossroads that I'm at personally.  PK has certainly been better than last year.  He is improving as a coach, but the problem I have is that this team is flawed at the core and a team that has 4 junior and 1 senior starters may eventually struggle to make the NIT.  Fast forward to next year and you have to wonder if these same players who will be a year older, who will still have the same flaws to athletically match up with top tier opponents.  And then fast forward to two years from now and PK is replacing 7 players (there are 7 juniors on the current roster) and where is this program.

I have no idea if the athletic department is at the same type of crossroads that I'm at, and I suppose that's the biggest question that we'll never know.  I don't know if its coincidence that this morning there's an article from FWST's Mike Jones about former UTEP, TAMU and Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie and how he's changed his ways and ready to get back into coaching (he says he's no longer drinking at all).   I'd be incredibly nervous about hiring a guy like Gillispie, but I'm admittedly confused and concerned about where this program is headed and if it's even headed on the right path.

Part of that confusion lies with the thought that PK offered a scholarship to Gulf Coast CC Paul Cooper, a 6-8/250 power forward who has hardly played for Gulf Coast and is shooting 36% and 5 points a game.  Thankfully, it appears that PK may be looking elsewhere as it appears that 6-8/225 forward Godwin Okonji will be taking a visit to Lubbock over the weekend, at least according to Okonji's Rivals.com's profile.  This is at the very least a step in the right direction in that PK cannot continue to stay committed to a player like Cooper that hasn't performed.  I have no idea if Cooper's been injured, but this looks like a bad situtation.  Okonji at the very least is a player that will have 4 years of eligibility compared with Cooper's 2 years.  Okonji is also playing on the best prep team in the nation, Las Vegas' Findlay and was recently featured in a Las Vegas Sun article.  Also while searching for stuff on Okonji, I found this feature about him on YouTube.

LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes this morning that it was the defensive lapses that cost Texas Tech the game last night.  Linehan's article really focuses not on the defense, or lack thereof, but on the blocking ability of Ekpe Udo:

"We don’t have anybody like that in practice unless I gave a guy a broom and had him block shots like that," Knight said. "We really don’t have anybody to simulate what he brings to the table."

Linehan also writes that PG John Roberson injured his ribs during a fall in the second half and is having trouble breathing.  Without Roberson against UT on Saturday, I'm not sure that Texas Tech has much of a chance.

Someone convince me that this program is going to be okay as currently constructed.

Miscellaneous:  Rush The Court checks in on the Big 12 . . .

Coaches' Poll:  The preseason Big 12 Coaches' poll was released yesterday and the Red Raiders are picked to finish last. LAJ's George Watson thinks that the coaches' rational is flawed:

For a team that truly believes it will be a regional team this season, this will do nothing but motivate them. I can see where the coaches might think this as they see only Chad Bettis returning from a pitching staff with a 6.31 ERA a year ago, but they obviously don’t know how Dan Spencer and his crew recruit. The pitching will be better this year, no doubt.

2010 Pre-Preseason Rankings:  Scout.com has incredibly early rankings for the Big 12, and figures that Texas Tech will finish 29th nationally, 3rd in the South and 4th overall:

Will Tommy Tuberville really make sure the offense rolls like it did under Mike Leach? That’s the plan meaning the early question mark will be at quarterback where Taylor Potts and fan-favorite Steven Sheffield will wage a fantastic offseason battle. There are more than enough veterans back on offense to be explosive, while the defense should be solid if a shutdown corner can emerge to replace Jamar Wall and the holes on the defensive front can be filled in right away. Getting Iowa State and Colorado from the North is a nice break, even if those games are on the road, while the Missouri battle is at home. The toughest road game is at Oklahoma, but the second-toughest road trip is at Colorado.

Tuberville, KWash and Damien to Have High Level Meeting . . . Hopefully:  The official site posted yesterday that head coach Tommy Tuberville will be in Midland on March 9th and in Lubbock on March 2nd.  This is tremendous and I'm encouraging public pressure from the rest of DTN to get get these two to go and detail a full report.  March 9th is also my birthday (as is Mike Leach's) and would be a great birthday gift, perhaps the best gift ever.

Glimpse Into Future:  LAJ's Karen Michael reported on a luncheon that Tuberville was at yesterday and if you've read the previous recruiting reviews, then you've probably already heard most of this, but I'm hoping that this quote alone produces a tremendous amount of controversy:

"We’ll put a lot of speed on the field," as well as a more aggressive defense, adding the team’s quarterbacks met with him soon after his arrival and asked Tech to run the ball a bit more to help protect them. "We’re going to be a little more balanced on offense."

Texas Tech Depth Chartin' :: The Quarterbacks

Overall: I don't know if it's the time and place to discuss if it's going to be Sheffield or Potts, I think all of this plays out over the course of the spring and even into the fall.  There's absolutely nothing to base our decision on what type of quarterback OC Brown will want to start. Despite who starts, I think it's a saving grace for Tuberville that he has two veteran options at the quarterback position. And I'd also like to add that I'm starting to get the feeling that the decision at quarterback and the entire offense is going to be left to Brown. Tuberville is obviously going to have his say on the defense and special teams, but I think that the offense is going to be left to Brown to manage.

At this point, what I'm hoping for during the spring, and this goes without writing, but I'll write it anyway, is that each and every position is pushed to their limits and the best player wins. Right now, I'm pretty comfortable stating that the starter role will probably lie with Sheffield or Potts, and I'm more than happy to see the backup role shake itself out. And the thought that Texas Tech needs a three or four year starter is a nice thought, but I'm always of the opinion, that a coach should play the best player, which takes into account physical ability, experience, etc. A coach has too much on the line, whether it's Tuberville or Leach, not to play who he thinks is the best player. Players get hurt and things change, so you always put your best foot forward and to give deference to the thought that it would be best to start a quarterback for three or four years sounds good in theory, but ultimately, the best decision is always to play the best player. I think there's a couple of reasons why Leach recruited a quarterback each and every recruiting class, mainly that I honestly believe that Leach always thought that repetition trumped talent most of the time and as a result, he always wanted a player that worked his way through his system and was ready and available to start. I have no doubt that Leach would have been content to start a senior for as long as he coached at Texas Tech.

Who Is Gone: No one. I guess you could consider Stefan Loucks, who transferred to North Alabama last year, to be one of the quarterbacks who left, but for now, this position is fairly intact.

Player Ht/Wt Year Probable Role
Steven Sheffield 6-4/190 SR Starter
Taylor Potts 6-5/218 SR First Backup
Seth Doege 6-2/205 SO Compete for Second Backup
Jacob Karam 6-1/205 RS FR Compete for Second Backup
Scotty Young 6-3/190 FR Redshirt

Who Is Still Around:  Steven Sheffield: I know, I said that this may not be a time for debate, but that's why you pay me the big bucks. To make tough decisions. With that being said, from last year alone, I think the job is Sheffield's to lose. Right now, Sheffield gives you the best of two world's, a quarterback with a good head on his shoulders, a mobile quarterback as the offensive line is replacing three starters again, and a quarterback that doesn't make as many mistakes as his competitor. This isn't to say that Sheffield doesn't have his faults. He does, but right now, I think he's the better option.

Taylor Potts: I'm actually pretty interested to see if Brown will be as intrigued with Potts as Leach was. I'm not sure what it was about Potts that Leach loved, but I do think that ultimately, Leach saw a tremendous amount of potential, and if he played up to that potential, he should be one of the best quarterbacks to roll through Lubbock. Despite those physical traits, it's the mental game is where Potts struggles the most, quickly reading defenses and making the right calls. Despite his limitations, I still think he's better than the other three options as far as readiness to play in game situations.

Seth Doege: I tend to be really conservative regarding backups. It was just last spring that Seth Doege was apparently pushing Sheffield for the backup role. Leach even thought so much of Doege that he inserted Doege into the starting role against Kansas, only to replace him at halftime with Potts. And now, it appears that Karam may be the quarterback that everyone thinks can take this team to the next step or should even garner consideration to start this year. I'm not going to be so quick to bypass Doege. Again, Leach has a stellar track record for identifying quarterback talent. There's a reason why Leach gave Doege a scholarship after being injured his entire senior year. I'd also tend to believe that time, repetition and experience play a huge role in how well a player will perform on the field. Right now, Doege has had more of all of those items than Karam and until we hear something definitively, that Karam has officially passed Doege, then I think Doege starts the spring as the second backup.

Jacob Karam: I absolutely love Karam, and I think he has a bright future as a quarterback for this team, but don't get your hopes up to see Karam take meaningful snaps in 2010. As mentioned above, Karam only has one year of collegiate training and I think high expectations are a good thing, but it's going to take time. As far as those that have this thought that Karam can step into the backup role this year, what do we know about Karam other than the traveled with the team and Leach loved his leadership ability? I'm hopeful that Karam can be that dual threat quarterback that can add a different dimension to this team, but I'm also of the opinion that Karam's window of opportunity really starts in 2011 when I think he'll have the opportunity to make his mark.

Scotty Young: I think that Young's commitment was a culmination of the time and effort it took to make the Texas Tech offense so prolific and the expansion of the spread game to the high school level. Despite playing in a spread offense in high school, Young was labeled as the best quarterback coming out of the state of Texas last year. And this isn't one of those situations where Young is going to be saddled with the thought that he's a weak-armed quarterback who can only succeed in the spread offense. Young is also one of the best high school pitchers in the state of Texas and has the opportunity of being drafted in April's MLB draft. Young is probably a better prospect at quarterback than Graham Harrell was and that's saying quite a bit.

The Season Thus Far: Very good, except for one hiccup against Colorado at the start of the Big 12 conference play. In non-conference play, the Bears lost to Alabama, which isn't looking great now, but the Tide aren't awful. The aforementioned loss to Colorado occurred at Boulder. The Bears have since lost to the best of the conference, including Kansas, Kansas St. and the Aggies, only the Kansas St. loss at home. To summarize, the Bears have won every game at home except for the Wildcats. I'm nervous.
