ESPN's Mark Schlabach Says Offensive Line, Special Teams Areas To Watch This Spring
Along with Tim DeRuyter's implementation of his 3-4 defensive scheme, Schlabach lists offensive line and special teams as two areas to watch in his look at the Big 12 going into the Spring.
While I am not worried about the offensive line, I think mentioning special teams is kind of a red herring. You can't really tell anything about special teams unless you are in a live game situation like a scrimmage, and I expect us to use split squads when we hold the Maroon & White game on April 17. It would be nice if we can find a kicker who can put the ball in the end zone the majority of the time, and a punt unit that can effectively keep the opposing punt pressure unit off our punter, though.

Logjam At Third Place In Big 12 Conference
After their loss to Kansas on Monday night, the Aggies are currently tied for third place in the Big 12 with Baylor and Missouri at 7-4 in conference play. The Aggies have a game at Baylor next Wednesday in Waco, so we'll have a chance to pull ahead of Baylor, assuming we take care of business and beat Iowa State in Ames on Saturday. If we take the next two games, we will be at 9-4 in conference, which means we'll be a lock for the NCAA Tournament.
After their loss to Missouri, texas has fallen to 6-5 in conference, and tied with Oklahoma State for 4th place. texas faces Tech and Oklahome State in their next two games, so there is a chance they will drop a spot in the standings if they lose to Oklahoma State. Tech is currently 4-7 in conference, and needs to reach at least 8-8 if they want to play in the Tournament, so I expect a strong effort born of desperation from them. Similarly, Oklahoma is sitting at 4-7, but barring a miracle, I don't think they will be moving up in the standings. OU seems to have thrown in the towel.
Baylor has games against us, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tech, and texas to round out their schedule. Given that Baylor knocked off texas in Austin, it is fairly safe to expect them to beat texas in Waco. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have already lost to Baylor in Waco, so I think they will split those two games on the road, at worst. If we're going to lock up third place in conference and a first round bye in the conference tournament, we need to beat Baylor in Waco.
Missouri, the other team tied for third place, has Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Kansas at home to close out their remaining schedule. Against such a weak slate, I expect Mizzou to finish 3-2 worst, or 10-6 in conference play. I think Missouri will lose at Kansas State and at home against Kansas, although the possibility of them pulling an upset in either game is there. If Missouri knocks off either Kansas or Kansas State, that will muddle the conference standings some more, and we'll be looking at a completely different picture the last weekend of the season.

Ags Add OL Signee
Texas A&M added a late addition to the '10 recruiting class when they picked up Navasota OL Jarvis Harrison 6'4 323. These are the kinds of recruits that I love because no one expects anything from them. Harrison recently achieved a qualifying score on the SAT and received an offer from Mike Sherman. If there is a better judge of OL talent in the country than Mike Sherman, I would like to see him. If Sherman thinks Harrison can help the team then I think he can. I know that after signing day, he was not looking to pick anyone else up. I think the fact that Harrison is now qualified, tipped the scale in his favor. I expect Harrison to redshirt this year. Harrison has only played football for two years and also plays basketball for the Rattlers.

Rivals Liked The Hire Of Terrell Williams
Rivals.com really likes our hire of Terrell Williams, listing it as the top DL position hire this offseason. Steve Kragthorpe as WR coach also gets honorable mention for that position. I liked the hire of Williams already, but it is nice to see that Sherman's hires are so well though of nationally.

If texas Moved To The Big Ten, A&M Would Move, Too
texas moving to the Big Ten would destroy their program, and strengthen A&M. If texas moved to the Big Ten, I don't think A&M would follow them. There are no geographical ties for A&M to the Big Ten, and the appeal really isn't there for us. A&M's best options would be to stay in a revamped Big 12, or to talk to the SEC. I think A&M would be better off approaching the SEC about dropping Arkansas, and adding us. While Arkansas fans would think this an impossibility, reality is that Arkansas add little to nothing to the SEC as far as television revenues go, and isn't a particular recruiting hotbed of note. Adding A&M to the SEC would open up a whole new area of recruiting for every SEC school, and open up two top 10 television markets (Dallas and Houston) to the SEC.
With A&M moving into the SEC, I think the Southwest Classic game with Arkansas would be allowed to expire after ten years, or the opponent would be replaced with another SEC school, most likely LSU. Our annual Thanksgiving Day game with texas would continue, but as a non-conference game. texas' move to the Big 10 would wreck their football program. I just don't see Texas high school recruits wanting to go play against Michigan or Ohio kids in college, kids they have no ties to. One of the things that makes Texas high school recruits choose to go to A&M, texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, etc, is the chance to play with or against the same kids they faced in high school. This type of regional rivalry would be non-existent when playing Big Ten teams. The only advantage I can see for texas going to the Big Ten is that they'd make more money in television revenue, but I believe the Big Ten shares their television revenue, so it isn't as capitalistic as the Big 12 revenue sharing model.
A&M in the SEC would allow the Aggies to share in what is currently the best television deal in all of sports. ESPN's ties to the SEC mean the conference is going to continue to be hyped as the top conference in football, even in years where they have a down season, like 2009. From a basketball standpoint, A&M would add another solid program to the SEC. The SEC currently has three teams ranked in the top 25 (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee), and A&M would give them another team that is becoming a Dance regular. The SEC is also an excellent conference for college baseball, and while we underachieved there last seasn, A&M has a solid program and a nice tradition to add to the league.
If texas joined the Big Ten, it would ultimately end up huritng their athletic department, while benefitting A&M.

Men's Basketball Ranked In The Top 25
We move into both polls, #24 in the AP and #23 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. We showed in our game against Kansas that we can compete with the best in the coutry; now we need to travel to Ames Saturday and take down Iowa State at their place.
