What a great essay. It was very poignant and moving. It made the decision to buy the book very easy. As the child of an "absentee father" trust me when I say that it's not how you start out, it's how you finish and you're doing a splendid job. Kids don't care what you do when you're with them, they'll just remember you were there.

Oh my gosh, this is just beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes, so much tenderness. The essence of love and what it truly means to be a parent just pours out and overwhelms the reader. I am a mom of one precious little nine year old girl that turned my word upside down, in the best way. I could very much relate to the feelings you described. I wish you the best with your book!

Great story. Thanks for sharing. My son, Jemal, turns 40 on the 21st of November. Its hard to believe that so many years have passed since his birth. When I held him in the minutes after his birth, I vowed that I would be a different kind of father to him than my father was able to be for me. And I would do my best to make a better world for him to live in. I'm still working.
TMatlack Replied:
Jed thanks for that. I suspect we are all on that journey. Part of my answer is this Project, but honestly the thing that still fills me up most is spending time, however imperfect a father I am, with my three kids.
