Carrollton Creekview football coach Kyle Geller said Thursday that he is leaving the school to take over at Burleson Centennial, a new school that opens in the fall but won't begin varsity play until the 2012-13 school year. Geller, 37, left Mansfield Summit after the 2008 season and finished 5-5 in his first season at Creekview last year, just missing the playoffs in District 9-5A. Geller said he is 33-21 in five seasons as a...
Liam Veazy qualified for 4A state in the 200 IM and the 500 free, and in doing so, he became the first Bryan Adams swimmer to qualify for a state event in his freshman and sophomore years. Last year, Veazy swam in the 500 free at state. His older brother, Caleb, won the 500 free and the 200 free state titles. He now swims at Arizona State. The UIL Swimming and Diving Championships are next...
The UIL district assignment appeals committee denied Sherman and Denison's request Thursday to move to District 10-4A, according to a news release sent from the UIL. Both schools were reassigned to District 13-4A when the 2010-2012 newly realigned districts were revealed Feb. 1. Sherman and Denison argued that the placement in District 13-4A would require travel to schools as far away as Texarkana and Mount Pleasant....
For those of you who follow Houston Yates basketball, particularly after the team all season has being accused for running up the score with their starters, this story in the Houston Chronicle may be found intriguing. Yates played only three starters last night in its 127-26 win against Houston Davis. The other two starters only saw eight minutes of playing time the entire game. Davis hasn't won a game all season, but a 101-point win...
Southlake Carroll is ranked No. 5 in the preseason Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, the highest ranking of any team in any class in the Dallas area. Last season, the Dragons advanced to the regional quarterfinals before losing to Flower Mound. The year before, Carroll lost to Plano West in the 5A state championship game. More than likely, the steroid testing program is kaput. Good? Bad? Like most issues, it's probably somewhere in between. Some high school athletes are taking steroids, I don't doubt that. But we'll never know whether steroids are a widespread problem. A story in the DMN a few years ago showed how easy it was to obtain them, and I think that scared a lot of parents -- and lawmakers, who made testing mandatory in 2007....
With the boys basketball playoffs right around the corner, almost every 5A district still has some work to do to decide who will make the playoffs. The top four teams from each district receive a berth, but those standings are still blurry because there are ties all over the place. A special congratulations to District 3-5A, the only one whose district standings are all sorted out. Some districts decide by a coin flip. Others sort...
Denison and Sherman, who were both assigned to District 13-4A in the UIL's biennial realignment relased Feb. 1, will have their appeal heard by the UIL district assignment appeals committee at 9 a.m. Thursday in Austin. Both schools are requesting a move to District 10-4A. The new format moved Sherman and Denison to District 13-4A, which will require travel to schools as far away as Texarkana and Mount Pleasant. "In recent years, we have traveled...
If you're reading this blog from Dallas, maybe you still can't get enough of Euless Trinity's thrilling 41-38 overtime win against Austin Westlake in the 2009 5A state championship game. If you're a Westlake fan, it might be a different story. But most Texas high school football fans can agree that they wish football season was a year-long event. To help pass the time, our friends at Fox Sports Southwest recently posted extended highlights from...

All the time, Alexia Standish drives into the lane, twisting amidst a group of opponents on her way to the hoop. So when she fell after doing so on Monday night, coach Dianna Sager didn't worry too much. But then she didn't get up. Standish lay there for a while, finally limping on her left leg when she started walking. At this point, late in the first half, Colleyville Heritage held a double-digit lead against...
On Nov. 20, the Duncanville girls beat Euless Trinity fairly easily, 48-32. A little more than a month later, however, Trinity led Duncanville most of the way in the championship of the Sandra Meadows Classic. Duncanville rallied from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win, 38-35. On Thursday, the teams meet a third time in the area round of the 5A playoffs. The matchup of Duncanville (31-3) and Trinity (30-4) comes early because... |
