David Ash of Belton knew he was meant to wear Texas' burnt orange before a scholarship offer was on the table.

"There's no school like them," Ash told Alex Byington of the Killeen Daily Herald. "They have so much tradition. I really respect what the coaches do. They just do things the right way - they treat people right. And they win that way and I'm just glad to be a part of it."

DT recruit Desmond Jackson glad he chose Texas

During Texas' Junior Day last weekend, 13 recruits committed to the Longhorns. Defensive tackle Desmond Jackson of Houston Westfield, one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the nation, is one of Mack Brown and Co.'s proudest snags.

Before committing to Texas, Jackson went to Alabama and Oklahoma Junior Days. But after visiting Austin, he's likely done with the recruiting process.

"I wanted to focus on my senior season," Jackson told Rivals.com. "It would be best for me to commit early and get it out of the way and focus on having a better season. I wanted to focus on getting healthy, lifting weights and having a great senior year."

Jackson feels like he made the right choice.

"Coach Brown was pretty psyched about it," Jackson said. "The whole time he was pretty happy about it. I was talking to coaches and it felt like a family atmosphere to me. I liked Alabama as well, but I know Texas like the back of my hand."

Texas' defensive schemes played a huge role in Jackson's decision as well. Jackson feels that his assets will be beneficial in that respect.

"I will be able to fit into the Texas defense a little better," he said. "Running the 4-3, I would do well in their system. They like athletic guys in the middle, but I could also play defensive end too if they needed me to."

Jackson can already bench press 400 lbs. and squat 525 lbs., and is a member of the Rivals 250 list.

Analyst: Longhorns Colt McCoy not a first-round pick, now fourth-best QB prospect

Mel Kiper of ESPN is not even considering McCoy as a first rounder. The only QBs he sees going in the first 32 picks are Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen.

According to statesman.com, Kiper was asked whether McCoy could be a possibility for Minnesota with the 30th pick of the first round as a future replacement for Brett Favre.

"I think (for) Colt McCoy, that's a little early," Kiper said. "I think maybe second round, third round, or fourth round is not out of the question. Dan LeFevour from Central Michigan has moved ahead of McCoy based on my board and some people in the league I talk to. "

Texas Longhorns could sink even more with tough road ahead

Just how low is Texas going to sink into the Big 12 standings? The Longhorns didn't really contest Missouri down the stretch last night. The Tigers are really good at home, but Texas' 6-5 record in conference play is baffling. This team was No. 1 in the nation at 17-0 and has gone 3-6 since then.

With road trips remaining against Texas A&M and Baylor, not to mention a tough home game against Oklahoma State which might have the conference's best player in James Anderson, Texas will have to play really well to get to 10-6.

Right now Rick Barnes' team is sixth in the Big 12. Those easy pre-conference wins over Pitt and Michigan State seem like the product of a different team.

Longhorns' Damion James a longshot for player of the year

Texas' Damion James is a finalist, but probably doesn't have a shot at national player of the year, according to a poll of 49 journalists conducted by AnnArbor.com.

In the most recent poll, 16 players earned votes. Ohio State junior forward Evan Turner has the lead with 110 points, followed by Kentucky freshman guard John Wall (97 points). The Longhorns' James has a whopping two points (one second-place vote).

The 49 journalists who take part in the voting hail from around the country. The way the voting works is that each writer ranks three players on their ballot. A first-place vote gets three points, second- place gets two and third-place gets one.

When Texas started its season on a 17-0 run, there was discussion about the Longhorns making it to the Final Four, having the most depth in the league and one of the best players in college basketball in James. But Texas is 3-6 since. And though James has consistently put up some of the best stats in the nation every game, it probably won't be enough for him to garner the national player of the year award.

Journalists seem to be favoring Turner, who has led the Buckeyes to nine straight wins in the Big Ten and nine wins in the past 10 games. He has averaged 19 points, 9.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game this year.

Check out the poll at Annarbor.com

The Onion isn't just about politics and current events anymore.

Now we have the Onion Sports Network (not to mention OSN2 and OSNU), with the analysis of NCAA Tournament expansion. Is 4,096 teams too many? No way, not with the Xenon International School of Hair Design. Remember, these teams have full rosters and they're holding practices. Who cares that they didn't get over that five-win hump?

Scout.com projects ex-Sooner Sam Bradford to be third player taken in draft

The NFL Combine and Draft are looming, and seven Big 12 Players have been involved in Top 20 discussions.

The following is Scout.com's projected drafting order. The Big 12 players are highlighted in bold:

For the full analysis of all players, click over to FoxSportsSouthwest

1. Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The most dominant player available in the 2010 draft, Suh is a lock to be a top-two pick in the draft after recording 12 sacks in '09.

2. Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

3. Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - After two surgeries on his throwing shoulder, a lot of questions surround Bradford. But if he's healthy and works out well, he's the No. 1 QB in the draft.

4. Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

5. Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - Not as dominant or as explosive as Suh, but for a team that needs a polished presence in the trenches, McCoy is a solid alternative.

6. Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - In a draft where the OT position is fairly deep, Okung stands out. He's experienced and has great ability at LT.

7. Joe Haden, CB, Florida -

8. Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama -

9. C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson -

10. Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - After his season got cut short after being ruled ineligible over an off-the-field encounter, Bryant's size, speed and ability will shine on Sundays.

11. Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - A big, strong OT who can play on both sides of the line, Williams projects to be a RT at the next level.

12. Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers -

13. Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech -

14. Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida -

15. Brandon Graham, DE/OLB, Michigan -

16. Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho -

17. Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa -

18. Taylor Mays, S, USC -

19. Everson Griffen, DE, USC -

20. Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - The only redshirt sophomore to declare, Thomas has great athleticism and ball skills, but he has to work on his tackling.

How about four mega-conferences?

3:30 PM Wed, Feb 17, 2010 |  |
Chuck Carlton/Reporter    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Forget small stuff, like Colorado going to the Pac-10 or Missouri becoming the 12th member of the Big Ten.

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated goes into full mega-realignment mode with his projection of a landscape separate from the NCAA. Think Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU as part of the new Pac-16. Or what about Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in a geographically expansive SEC?

It's not going to happen but in a media landscape where people seriously entertain the idea that Texas could actually wind up in the Big Ten, why not go all in?

Colt McCoy throwing; could he be next Drew Brees?

11:13 AM Wed, Feb 17, 2010 |  |
Laken Litman/Texas Special Contributor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

Colt McCoy is throwing 40 to 50 balls a day in an intense rehabilitation program for the injury that knocked him out of the national championship game and hopes to fully participate in the NFL draft combine next week.

McCoy said Monday that the nerve injury in his right shoulder is "really coming along" and is close to being 100 percent.

"Hopefully I'll be able to throw at the combine. That's my goal, I love to compete, I want to go out and compete with those guys, go out there and throw and be myself," he said. But obviously if the doctors don't let me, I'm not going to be able to do that."

McCoy has remained mostly in California doing rehab since getting hurt in the BCS game on Jan. 7, and has been overseen by noted sports doctor James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala. At this point in time, McCoy is planning on participating at the Combine and also in the Longhorns' Pro Day on March 31.

"The injury and I think the way that my college career ended has kind of sparked a fire inside of me as far as I'm going to show that I'm going to be ready to go. I'm going to show them that I'm the best, I'm going to show that I'm confident," he said. "I can't wait to step out on the field again, forget the taste that's in my mouth from the last time I played the game. That's what's driving me everyday."

Some experts think Drew Brees' Super Bowl victory proves shorter quarterbacks can succeed in the NFL. Brees is arguably the league's shortest starting quarterback.

"I think it opens some eyes. No question about it," said Gil Brandt, the former Dallas Cowboys director of player personnel and current personnel analyst for NFL.com. "To me, Colt is Drew Brees on the field and Drew Brees off the field. But he's about two and a half inches taller and he's faster."

Oklahoma's Sam Bradford (6-4, 223) and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen (6-3, 223) are the top two quarterbacks available in the draft and are projected to be taken among the top 10 overall selections.

Some analysts rate McCoy as the third-best quarterback prospect but not as a first-round pick but as a third-rounder.
