Figure skater' Plushenko's arrogance knows no boundaries

Russia's Evgeny Plushenko has been the most arrogant competitor at the Games. It started with his complaints that anyone who didn't put the quad in his program was essentially doing the sport a disservice just because he's one of the few people in the world who can consistently pull it off. Maybe, that was just gamesmanship. Then came his comments after the USA's Evan Lysacek edged him by 1.31 points to become the first American...

Any thoughts on the worst uniforms of the Vancouver Games (not counting the men's figure skaters -- sheesh!)? My votes go to the U.S. snowboarders' flannel-shirt-faded-jeans look that makes it seem we recruited homeless lumberjacks to represent us on the halfpipe, and the outrageously garish plaid pants of the Norwegian men's curling team. Even Johnny Weir wouldn't be caught dead in those. (AP Photo)...

Pavol Demitra scored in the seventh round of a shootout to give Slovakia an unexpected 2-1 victory over Russia, one of the favorites for the gold. A day after losing to their arch-rivals and former countrymen from the Czech Republic, the Slovaks played tough and physical against the skilled Russians, and Demitra was inspired. He set up the tying goal in the third period with a pretty pass to Marian Hossa, and seemed to be...

Along with Evan Lysacek's stirring gold in men's figuring skating, the USOC provides a wrap up from another big day in Vancouver for the Americans: Alpine skier Julia Mancuso became the first U.S. woman to win three Olympic medals in alpine skiing, the fifth female U.S. alpine skier to win multiple medals in the Olympic Winter Games, and the first since Jean Saubert at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympic Winter Games. Lindsey Vonn led the downhill...

Lysacek wins gold in men's figure skating

Evan Lysacek tonight became the first American man to win gold in figure skating since Brian Boitano in 1988, and he beat Evgeni Plushenko, the intimidating defending gold medalist, to do it. In the end, despite Plushenko's unflinching belief that champions should perform quad jumps, Lysacek won with a complete performance of a lifetime. He didn't need the quad. Plushenko reportedly remained defiant until the end. "I was positive I had won," said Plushenko, the...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia-Only steps from the Olympic Flame, spectators crowded into every nook Thursday evening at the Elephant & Castle Pub, glued to the hockey game on T.V., groaning and hoping, praying for a Canadian goal. Curling tickets forgotten, chit-chat cut off, only Team Canada mattered. Finally, Sidney Crosby swept in and scored the game-winner over Switzerland in a shoot out. Immediate, mad din overwhelmed the place, with high fives and more high fives and...

OK, this is getting ridiculous

The rout is on. Again. At the end of the first period, the U.S. women's hockey team leads Finland 4-0, and it isn't that close. The Americans are pretty much scoring whenever they darn well feel like it, with three of their goals coming in a span of a little over three minutes. They're even scoring on trick shots -- Meghan Duggan put one past the Finnish goalie with a no-look, between-the-legs shot. Facing away...

Men's hockey team taking Norway to woodshed early

The big game is Sunday against Canada, but the US hockey team is taking care of business in the first period against Norway. Goals by Phil Kessel (Madison, Wis.) and Chris Drury (Trumbull, Conn.) have give the US a 2-0 lead after one period. Kessel made it 1-0 at 2:39 of the period, and Drury made it 2-0 at 13:04. The Americans have outshot Norway 15-2. (Photo of Kessel's goal by Getty Images)...
