Cowboys fan: Philadelphia airport security targeted me because of my Cowboys jersey

11:54 AM Thu, Feb 18, 2010 |  |
Mark Francescutti/Sports Editor    Bio |  E-mail  |  News tips

A Dallas Cowboys fan believes TSA screeners pulled her out of security line for additional searches at Philadelphia International Airport because of her Cowboys jersey, a CBS local television station reported.

Alyson Galen was headed to board a flight to Florida on January 15 when, before she even got to the metal detector, she was ordered by a TSA screener to get out of line, WBTV3 reported.

"My husband said to me 'did you beep?' And I told him I didn't even go through the metal detector," Galen said.

Galen was taken to be patted down in a plexiglass area in full view of other passengers.

Then, a screener walked up to her as she was putting her shoes back on to resume her trip. "He walked up to me and said 'how's it feel to be a Cowboys fan in Philadelphia?' I did tell him 'wow,'" Galen said.

Galen thinks TSA screeners pulled her out of line because of her Cowboys jersey.

"People need to understand you can't joke in this day and age," she said. "People around the world are trying to hurt us as Americans and you just can't joke about that."

This isn't the first problem a Cowboys fan has had in Philadelphia in the past month. Last month, a female Cowboys fan had 'blood running down my cheek' after an assault by Eagles fans.

Galen did not file a formal complaint, but hopes TSA will offer an explanation and apology.

TSA officials released a statement to WBTV3 that read in part:

"TSA trains our workforce to screen each passenger with dignity and respect. If travelers feel they have been mistreated during screening, we encourage them to ask for a supervisor at the checkpoint."

Philly fans are A-holes... no surprise there, no matter WHAT job they manage to find.

Huge cowboy fan and hate the eagles. But I will say that she probably did not get pulled out only because of the jersey. I travel all the time (million mile flyer) and people including myself get pulled out all the time before even going through the metal detectors. They basically choose a random number and every XX person gets screened.

Now was the comment by the TSA guy completely ridiculous, of course. But the fact that a TV station got involved because this women was so rattled by a random screening is crazy, and seems to be a major waste of time. Also, she seemed pretty pissed, and I bet she never thought how people that look middle eastern or are on the govnerment list because of their name feel when they get screened every time.

I have done airport security (pre-9/11), there is always one who says something stupid who thinks it is a joke.

As TSA said if she felt they did it for no reason (she obviously was a handicapped person-Dallas fan), then she should have complained

Personally I think she was BS-ing to get some attention, try a reality show Bimbo

I was just in Philadelphia last week and a few TSA screeners joked with me about my Dallas Cowboys shirt. I told them "what do you expect, I'm flying back to Dallas." I didn't know of this story at the time, but I did intentional wear the shirt because I was in Philadelphia and wanted to see what response I would get. The TSA screeners acted professionally, and it was all in good fun.

The American Airlines flight attendant also mentioned my shirt as soon as I stepped onto the plane. She asked if I was trying to get abused? I said, "we're going to Dallas, certainly there is another Cowboys fan on the flight who'll lend a hand if necessary!"

In my experience, many Eagles fans are usually rude and vulger at the games I've attended up there. But not all fall into that catagory.

I'm headed back there next week. After seeing this story, I'll wear even more Dallas Cowboys stuff.

The idiot who called himself a Cowgirl has never done any airport security. He may have done janitorial work, but not airport security. Hey dumb-a$%, if you want attention for yourself, instead of trying blogs from other fansites, why don't you try coming out of the closet in Philly, you will get plenty of love and attention there. Goodluck wanna be.

Well "Cowgirls Fans..bringing out the worst in people" obviously the only reason you post on a Dallas blog is to get some personal attention. Your uncalled for personal attack on a person that you do not know is unwarranted. I am assuming that you are stating that all the people that are Dallas (city of, county of, Stars, Mavericks and of course Cowboys) fans are "handicapped". I like my city (Dallas) and I like the various sports teams who are in Dallas which makes me a "fan" and I am handicapped; however, it is not because I am a 'FAN" of any place or team. I personally think that you are one very sick individual! Normally, I would not wish this on anyone, but for you I will make an exception. I hope that someday you have to experience the hardships and frustrations of being handicapped and that you suffer the hours, days, weeks, months and years of pain that many of us have to endure. Maybe then you will not be so insensitive in your observations. I hope that you have a good day.

As a lifelong Cowboys fan currently residing (would never say I "live" here) in Philly, you betcha she was targeted by the TSA goons at Philly's turgid airport. I've never encountered a place where fans from other cities -- especially, it seems, Cowboys fan -- are ridiculed, abused, targeted and even physically threatened as they are here. In the hockey world, it's true as well for Washington Capitals fans, especially those who where Alex Ovechkin jerseys. I could tell a few true stories, and have long learned NOT to admit to anyone here that I love my 'boys.

It is absolutely true that Philly is a town with fans who are total losers, looters and deadbeats devoid of class and any modicum of intelligence. Cowboys fans, just pack the gear and don't wear it when in Philly.

Eagles' fans are turds. Plain and simple.

Jnew is overly naive, especially for a frequent traveller, if you believe screenings are 'random'.

Unfortunately all too many TSA agents pull that kind of crap JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN; and "bring it to the attention of a supervisor at the checkpoint." WHAT A JOKE! They'll "go through the motions" and the jerk will get a "slap on the wrist" AT worst that they'll laugh at you about as soon as your flight leaves. Too many power happy jerks with badges and a liscence to harrass.

This is the same bunch of TSA morons that had a four year old kid remove their leg braces and then try to walk through the metal detecting machine. The whole bunch should be fired.

You are all gay

Wow. She is very ugly. Who cares what ugly cowgirls fans think?

Hey eagle fans, shouldnt you be assaulting another lone woman right about now.

Signed:

COWARDS and LOSERS

Yeah. Phil gave me a ration because I wore a RAMS jersey. Actually a lot of people do.

Whats it like to be a Cowboys fan in Philly? I assume its like being a Cowboys fan anywhere. Pretty darn good!

Hey lady, no sense letting the jerks of the world get to you. That's the way lowlifes behave.

Be happy that you probably hand out more in tips than jerkwad Philly TSA screeners make in a year.

By all means, call a supervisor over, then you'll have to deal with TWO A-HOLES!!!

Once again, this is a telling indictment of the city of Philadelphia, the state of Pennsylvania, the nation of the United States, North America, the Western Hemisphere, and the world!

Typical Filth-adelphia losers

About ten years ago, I was at the philly airport on a 2 hour layover. It was about 6 am and I was trying to get coffee, but the guy wouldn't take my order. Finally, someone in line told me "No coffee here a--hole". I stepped away and realized I had on my Dallas Cowboys cap. I took it off, went to another kiosk, and got served right away.
Love those eagles. So glad Dallas swept them this year.

Funny how the cowgirl fans act so high and might.Like they would never do that type of thing, well I am a NY GIANT FAN living in another country, its called Texas,Every time I wear anything that shows the NY GIANTS name or logo, I get a bunch of crap from young men and women, I am very close to 70 years old and I really dont care what you like or dislike, but RUDE,CRUDE And ignorant were perfected in this great state.Oh you here all of this church talk from one side of the mouth, but from the other is just plane garbage.

A little off the subject I know, but it does concern a former Cowboy . The old ( I love my hair coach ) Jimmy Johnson. Talk about sinking lower and lower. He's doing Extenze commercials now. I wonder if he'll be on the panel for Fox with Terry and Howie etal next season ?

The most important point is remember Philly people in general are rude aholes no matter where you are from. I use to travel into PHilly a lot and always glad to leave that place. Isn't going to change. Also remember most football fans are jealous of the Cowboys so you would expect it. Goes with the territory.

It wouldn't be surprising if the lady was given a hard time because she wore a Cowboys Jersey. A true fan of the game who minds their own business will often find themselves in some mess if they aren't wearing "Eagles Green." Philly fans take their sports way too serious! Philly fans are absolutely the most classless fans in the country. I can remember going to Phillies games and the fans would boo Mike Schmidt and call him out his name. How could I ever forget when the fans cheered when Michael Irvin was seriously hurt in that game in 1999.

Good grief, I'm 78 years old, wrinkled white guy, decrepit, and I've been pulled out and patted down three or four times. No, I wasn't wearing cowboy or Eagle or Giant stuff...just old man's stuff. To whom should I complain? This little lady has led a pretty fortunate life if this is what she's got to complain about.

Come on give Philly a break. How can you expect an airport employee have class when he's lives in a classless city.
Philly the city of brotherly shove.

haha love it, about time Dallas fans got treated the way they treat out of town visitors in Jerry land. I have been to 2 cowgirl games and the fans there are about as obnoxious as they get. Dont treat people bad and maybe you will get a little respect.

Well, a fan of ANY team can EXPECT to be given some sort of greif if they wear the WRONG "colors" in the wrong city. Still, a government employee on taxpayers time is a whole DIFFERENT matter. I don't CARE what team you're a fan of ON YOUR OWN TIME! It's one thing for them to be a bit over zealous (like the gal in customs in Manila who was ABOUT to try dismantling my AEROSOL shaving cream can). It's another matter altogether to needlessly hassle one person and by so doing possibly MISS a real terrorist!

Not newsworthy. Much ado about nothing.

I'm a lifetime Cowboys fan living in PA and this is what makes us Americas team a woman in filly with her boys gear on. Cowboys fans are eveywhere my family is proof. I think Dallas TSA should grab a woman in Dallas with her EaGALS crap on ..... wait there is nobody in Dallas wearing EaGALS crap. I think this story is true I work and live with these ignorant dumbazzes it is more than likely true.

CW

Gee, I live in Philadelphia and it's always been my opinion that football fans IN GENERAL are idiots and morons. Who but a thug is a fan of a "game" in which success is measured by knocking people down and causing permanent brain damage? Yes, I really enjoy watching people get concussions - you can even listen to bones crunching, since they now have microphones on the field!

But the thuggery seems to be even worse in places like Dallas, where football is more of a religion than a sport. (I guess because y'all don't have any other successful teams, you pin all your projections and anxieties onto football.)

Get a life, football fans!

Yeah, NO Saint, we know that Saint's fans in their drunken stupor never treat any opposing fans with dissrespect when they're in the Super Dump. I was in that place when the Cowboys kicked the crap out of the Saints this year, and heard more crap from fans...even after we finished beating them. The best thing one guy could come up with was "at least our stadium is paid for!" I said "you mean this dump that Katricians wiped their feces on during the hurricane?"

Well Blondie, if you care so little about the sport why then did you bother to read and respond to the article? Oh you say they canceled you're all important schedule of "soaps and game shows" to put on that "Olympics crap"? So, you read it out of sheer boredom? Or was it a mistake? Anyway you and your two idols Roseanne and Peggy (Bundy) go have another butt and another box of Bon Bons washed down with another six pack, and instead of reading things on the computer, why not try your usual "dial-a-friend"?

Oh, I only read it because someone sent me the link as an example of how football fans think. And it really is classic.

It's funny that grown people in a complex world put so much energy and time into something so very pointless. Do you suppose, as you lie on your deathbed with your loved ones gathered round, that your last thoughts will be of the final down in a Cowboys game?

Well blondie, I try not to spend a lot of time dwelling on what I'll be thinking "on my death bed". As a combat veteran, I learned a LONG time ago that any of us can die at any minute and that the only guarantee that comes with a birth cert is that somewhere, someday, someone will be making out a matching death cert. Between now and that date I do my best to enjoy life. Playing golf and watching football (a game I used to play but am MUCH too old for now) as well as discussing things ABOUT my favorite team in my favorite SPECTATOR sport are pleasant ways to spend my time. Having some idiot in a uniform put my life and the lives of others at risk or vandalize my property (different comment same thing) NEEDLESSLY; makes me angry And what can be done to one of us can be done to ANY OF US. The word you DEAR "high minded" sort is EMPATHY! So, if you're too blind to SEE that this person whom you don't know COULD have been a family member...

Lived in Dallas area 23 years and we are Eagles Fans.Love Dallas but have no respect for the so called "closet fans".

If you poll other cities,NY,Washington,Pittsburgh and etc,you will find that Cowboys fans and the team, especially the owner are looked down on as a bunch of cry babies.

Philly people are just like anyone else, mostly good, and a few bad apples.

"America Team" only in Dallas.

For thoes of you that live in Philly and don't like it, LEAVE.

Phillie fans are a bunch of idiots. I mean come on. You guys boo your qb when he makes mistakes and even call for gis retirmment but when he does good wow hes god sent. Even Deion Sanders called you faggets the worst fans in the NFL. You mother fers dont know what being a loyal fan is all about. Pu$$ys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually Vinnie, I live in the heart of Cards/Rams/Bears country; and what I find about the fans of other teams isn't disdain, it's jealousy. As to the Stealers fans, do you know how many there were BEFORE those SB's were gift wrapped for them? In most any othe NFL city you could have counted 'em on one hand. Oh, and if you don't understand that part about gift wrapped, ask that OTHER cry baby; Mike Holmgren.
What makes me upset is the fact that jerks like that, who are SUPPOSED to be doing a serious job, will take a chance on letting an ACTUAL terrorist get by them in order to pull some assinine crap like this. I mean gee, a whole plane full of people wound up DEAD but wasn't it funny when I...

I am a diehard Cowboy fan, and this is what we fans do to each other. I rag on those wearing Redskin jerseys all the time here in the DC area. We Americans are overly sensitive about everything, and we need to get some tough skin fast. I get poked at by the TSA at Reagan National ALL the time and at BWI. I talk smack right back, and it is all in fun. I bet she will pursue a frivilous lawsuit over this.

The Dallas airport did the same thing to a friend of mine who wore a NY Giants Superbowl sweatshirt. She was taken aside and told to take off the sweatshirt or be padded down. So it's not just Philadelphia. It's everywhere.

I don't care where ELSE it happens, or WHY! Nor do I care what people SAY to one another (that's called the 1st Amendment.) BUT, airport security; ESPECIALLY in light of the things that have happened in recent years is another matter entirely! And, to take the time away from actually DOING the job in order to pull this kind of crap DOES put everyone who uses those airplanes AT NEEDLESS RISK. If these children want to play, let them get jobs such that they can do so WITHOUT risking the lives of others in the process. Sports rivalry, like everything else, has a PROPER time and place. And, THIS IS AIN'T IT!

LOL cowboys fans are the most crybaby fans ever. Find any excuse to make it a big deal. I live in Dallas and I would SPIT on that stupid star in front of ANYBODY! Ive burnt dallas jerseys in front of fans and noone had any guts to say anything. Thats why the Cowboys are known as the Cryboys, because the same as that stupid player who accused Brett Favre of running up the board shows how stupid they are crying all the time. LOL Dallas fans are dumb.

Eagle fans reflect the overall emotional immaturity the rest of us must endure from people who are losers in their personal life. They are obsessed with vicarious pleasure derived from successful people and when they don't get it, their life is destroyed because they in fact, have no life. That's why they boo so much. It's all they have.

The Eagles have NEVER won a Super Bowl yet insist on arrogantly pounding their chest (very similar to Texas A&M fans). It's their collective inferiority complex (aka Napolean syndrome) that drives them... At least the Giants and the Redskins have a history of Super Bowl success...

Too bad Eagles fans: as you like to say "SHUT UP!"

Yeah Cryboys, suck it, now go and cry what the fact that Marky-mark never made a movie about the best moment in your team's history. That's right, he returned a fumble for a touchdown, against you thirty years ago, suck it.

You're right @ Dallas Sux! Cowboys fans are dumb, but guess what? The majority of them are not even in or from Texas partner!

OMG - we Americans are the biggest group of wanky whiners in the WORLD. SO WHAT if this lady got patted down in public? I travel a lot and I see people getting patted down ALL the time, I've gotten patted down many times in full view of everyone - THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE, HONEY. If you're so self-conscious, then next time it happens request a private screening. And as for the TSA screener's comment - BIG WHOOP. Let try this on - if another passenger had said, "How's it feel to be a Cowboys fan in Philly?" She'd have had a good-natured laugh about it and gone on about her business. MAYBE, just MAYBE, the TSA screener thought she appeared annoyed or perturbed at the process and was just trying to use a little humor to lighten her day? For crying out loud - we need not to take everything that happens to us so personally, or just not venture out of our homes without adult supervision.

Pardon me Ray, but I don't beleive in the tooth fairy either. As for you Dallas hating morons, as I said it could have happened to you, your wife, sister or GF; it appears to have been nothing but an excuse, and it doen't matter WHICH team it was ours or YOURS; it was wrong. But, hey, so a couple of hundred people die because some twit with the mentality of a fifth grader is working as a TSA agent and was too intent upon being a hotshot jerk to do his job, gee so what. Unless of course you or yours is aboard the plane. DORKS!

I have been a Cowboy fan in Philly for 35 years and I am not surprised by this at all. Stuff like this goes on up here all the time.

This city is filled with nitwits, dopes and morons, not to mention cowards, and a union-entitlement mentality that leads to institutional laziness and all manner of biases.

Surprised that they target women? Not at all. These leeches feed off the small and the weak. That's the only way they can feel good about themselves.

It's been my experience that those that have to come here to try and #$%^ on Dallas fans do so because they can't in real life. People that "claim" they have done the things they have done to seem as though they are tough either are classless(obivous)or liars(most likely true as well). My guess is both.
But every time I have seen Dallas fans react in an adverse fashion was because the opposing fan started it. What other stadium have ever gone to that the fans don't get less rowdy then they do in Dallas? Most die hard Dallas fans complain about this but some how Dallas fans are rude?
Get real.
Saints fans were rude in the game they beat us before during and after the game. Have been rude ever since the team started to do well ,a dn most have no clue as to anything about the team
