WASHINGTON — Consumer prices excluding food and energy fell in January — the first time they have in any month since 1982. The benign report Friday on consumer inflation sent a positive signal to investors. It suggested the Fed will be able to keep short-term interest rates at record lows to strengthen the economic recovery without triggering inflation.

Tiger Woods: Sorry for behavior, unsure of return

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Tiger Woods apologized Friday for cheating on his wife and said he is unsure when he will return to competitive golf. "I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable," said Woods, looking composed and speaking in a steady voice. His wife, Elin, was not with him.
