PROVIDENCE -- With the first of Governor Carcieri's 12 government shutdown days scheduled for Friday, state employee unions have begun their legal offensive. Since last Friday, two of the state's major unions have filed grievances alleging the shutdowns would be tantamount to an illegal lockout of state workers.

PROVIDENCE -- The state came out of the tumultuous budget year that ran from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009, with a $61.8-million General Fund deficit that the Carcieri administration is attributing exclusively to a sharp decline in anticipated revenues.
The state Department of Health has ordered Summit Commons, a skilled nursing center on the East Side of Providence, to correct deficiencies, including a failure to treat and track bedsores, or lose its Medicare certification.
TIVERTON -- Shortly after 8 on Monday morning, Gail Corvello got a knock on her door, one that has been seven years in coming. Opposite Corvello's home at 190 Bay St., a huge backhoe was about to break ground on the cleanup of the largest and most complex soil contamination case in recent Rhode Island history.
CENTRAL FALLS -- Diane Eadiekromah wanted to see the baby girl awake. She had helped the grandmother watch the five older siblings while their mother was in the hospital last week having the baby. On Sunday night, Eadiekromah's opportunity came, but disappeared in a hail of bullets.
PROVIDENCE -- The attorney general's office is investigating whether Twin River's parent company engaged in "deceptive trade practices" and "false advertising" by calling the Lincoln gambling facility a "casino," following a complaint by the Narragansett Indian tribe.
Governor Carcieri has accepted an invitation to headline the annual fundraising banquet for the Massachusetts Family Institute, an advocacy organization that promotes marriage between a man and a woman and considers homosexuality "an unhealthy practice and destructive to individuals, families and society."
PROVIDENCE -- The final meeting of the governor's advisory panel monitoring his executive order related to undocumented immigrants will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Department of Administration at One Capitol Hill, Conference Room A.
CUMBERLAND -- The town has advised the chief of the Seaconke Wampanoag tribe to order a homeless encampment off a Superfund hazardous waste site by Wednesday or face potential court action. "The property is not suitable for human habitation," Town Solicitor Thomas E. Hefner wrote.
