Despite Oncor's claim, some residents still without power

Update: 5 p.m.

Oncor spokeswoman Catherine Cuellar said crews should be at the Salisbury and Burns residences this afternoon.

She also said a handful of lingering outages remain from last week's storm, but new problems are occurring as weakend tree limbs fall on power lines. About 1,700 area homes were without power as of 3 p.m. "With the winds picking up we're seeing new outages," Cuellar said.

"I want to apologize to the folks still without power. I know it's frustrating and inconvient," she said. "It's an imperfect system, and we're doing the best we can with what we have."

Cuellar urged residents to keep reporting outages at 1-888-313-4747. Residents have complained about a lack of response to such calls.

"We do want to improve our communication," Cuellar said. "We will take the lessons of this storm into consideration. The public's feedback is needed."

Original post:

Oncor Electric Delivery proclaimed Monday that electrical power had been restored "to all customers" knocked off-line by the record snow storm.

Jim Salisbury begs to differ. He says his Oak Cliff home is still without power, five days after the lights went out. And a electrical line still lies in his side yard at 1739 Boca Chica Drive, he said.

"I've been calling since early Friday morning, and I'm getting nothing from them," he said.
"I hear Oncor's said everybody's got power again. I guess I'm a nobody.

"I wonder if I lived in Highland Park would I have had my power restored Friday."

Chris Burns told us his East Dallas home remains without power as well, and that he too has a line down in his yard at 6016 Penrose.

"Every morning I call and repeat my complaint," he said.

Other angry, frustrated, tearful folks told us this morning that their lights were still out. But through the day Keith Mitchell, Laymonde Lee, Sherri Lewis and Emily Whitsett reported that their electricity had been restored.

In its news release, Oncor warned that its customers "will continue to experience spotty outages in the coming weeks" as weakened limbs and trees fall on power lines.

We called an Oncor spokeswoman this morning and await a response.

The company also said crews will begin pruning trees affected by the storm in preparation for the spring storm season.

Nice. Forecasters say you're in luck: Tuesday will be sunny and clear with a high close to 50 degrees. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be same but even closer to the average high of 60 degrees.

(Editor's note: We'd like to thank the cute kiddos above for playing ... even though their picture was taken years ago for an unrelated story. But I bet they like sunshine.)

UPDATED: Oncor says power struggle over tree trimming halted progress some D-FW areas

Original post @ 9:04 p.m., Sun., Feb. 14

oncortweet.jpgA new twist tonight in the power outage caused by the historic snow storm. On its Twitter page, Oncor says the number without power is down to 25,000 customers but that:

Restoration work stopped in 2 neighborhoods as homeowners refused 2 let crews clear tree limbs from the line. Crews had 2 move 2 next outage

Please understand, your decision to refuse tree trimming is preventing others from having their power restored.

Oncor spokesman Chris Schein tells me that one neighborhood is in Arlington Fort Worth and the other is in Dallas. I'm waiting for details on exact neighborhoods and number of customers impacted.

Update @ 9:40 p.m.

Schein says the homeowner in North Dallas is without power, but does not want his tree trimmed. Oncor says that is preventing the rest of the neighborhood from also being restored.

In Arlington Fort Worth, Schein says the homeowner did have power but parked his car beneath the tree to prevent the trimming and restoration for others in his neighborhood.

Oncor says police were called to both locations. Trimming has apparently started in the Arlington neighborhood. Schein is waiting on an update from the North Dallas home.

Schein says this kind of thing has happened after other storms. Matter of fact, he says, the Sheriff had to be called out near Sherman last week when an uncooperative homeowner pulled a gun on trimmers trying to prune a tree so that an Oncor crew could pick up a downed power line.

Update @ 9:20 a.m., Mon., Feb. 15

Oncor says one of the incidents from last night was actually in Fort Worth not Arlington. The trees in both locations (Oncor not releasing the exact addresses) were eventually trimmed and power was restored in those neighborhoods.

About 15,000 customers remain without power. Oncor says it hopes all will have electricity by 5 p.m. today.

Update @ 12:27 p.m.

The latest on the tree saga: Oncor says police were called to four locations (Richardson, North Dallas and two in Fort Worth) overnight where homeowners refused to let their trees be trimmed. Those issues were resolved and power is back on in those areas.

Frosty the Snowman

Had to hurry on his way

But he waved goodbye

Saying don't you cry

I'll be back again some day

Until then, take a look at the various creations captured by DMN photojournalist Guy Reynolds in two neighborhoods: Oak Cliff | East Dallas

Snow flurries possible in the Dallas area

No reason to choke on a chocolate, but the National Weather Service says that purple blob on the radar above Dallas-Fort Worth could produce a few flurries around here this afternoon and evening. Gusty winds are already making for a below-freezing wind chill, but no accumulation of snow is expected.

Stay warm, Cupid.

Many of you asked earlier today about snowfall in certain areas. This map from the National Weather Service depicts totals across North Texas for the record-breaking snow event. The NWS also listed them by county.

Freezing fog then maybe sun again for Dallas?

5:49 PM Fri, Feb 12, 2010 |

allstarsnowman.jpgOur friends at National Weather Service say all this snow on the ground has left us ripe for possible freezing fog overnight.

Once that clears out, we might see the sun again as high temperatures get to around 50 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

I wonder how long it'll take for this 10-foot all-star built by John, Justin, Wade and Sam of Flower Mound to melt?
