American Samoa will be receiving $300,000 under the US Department of Homeland Security’s FY 2008 Real ID Demonstration Grant awards for states and territories. The Fotu o Samoa, a boat belonging to the Samoa government, has been contracted to provide much-needed passenger and cargo service to Manu’a. This is according to an announcement from Governor Togiola Tulafono who has expressed deep concern for the lack of sea transportation service to Ofu and Faleasao wharves, not to mention what he calls inconvenience and hardship placed on the residents of Manu’a since the MV Sili was dry docked.
06-12 CNR/DoA Fighting Breadfruit Pest on Ta’u
Since the 1990s, when the Seychelles scale insect was accidentally introduced to Ta’u, residents there have watched their breadfruit and other trees suffer from repeated outbreaks of the sap-sucking insect. As the white wax-covered Seychelles scales feed on the plant juices, they excrete a sugary waste product that drips onto the leaves below. Black sooty mold grows on this exudate, giving the trees an ugly appearance and blocking the sunlight that is needed for the tree to grow.

05-17 First class stamp featuring AS flag to be released next month
The flag of American Samoa will be featured on a new first class stamp set to be released on June 14. The new stamp is part of the new series of stamps by the US Postal Service to honor the flags of all 50 states, the five territories, and the District of Columbia.

American Samoa Humane Society Conducting Dog Population Study
PAGO PAGO, Tuesday April 1, 2008- Throughout April and May of this year, researchers contracted by the American Samoa Humane Society (ASHS) will be conducting a dog population study on Tutuila Island. The study aims to document the number of dogs observable along public roads in highly populated areas in the central and western districts, as well as in some small and mid-sized villages in both the eastern and western districts. The researchers will gather data on the sex, age, and general health status of dogs they encounter during the study.
