Harman shares soar on return to profit

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Harman International Industries Inc. surged as much as 15% to $41.05 Tuesday as investors reacted to a sharp turnaround in its quarterly results. The company, which makes audio, GPS and "infotainment" systems primarily for the automotive industry, said late Monday it swung to a profit in the fiscal second-quarter, posting net income of $16 million. It had a net loss of $219 million a year ago. Excluding one-time items, Harman had a profit of $53 million or 40 cents a share, reversing a year-ago loss of $16 million, or 21 cents a share. Google CEO Eric Schmidt hinted in July that display advertising would probably be the next of his company's businesses to generate $1 billion in sales. Analysts say 2010 is the year he'll deliver on that prediction.
