We're happy to announce that over the next few weeks we will be rolling out the ability to upload, store and organize any type of file in Google Docs. With this change, you'll be able to upload and access your files from any computer -- all you need is an Internet connection.Instead of emailing files to yourself, which is particularly difficult with large files, you can upload to Google Docs any file up to 250 MB. You'll have 1 GB of free storage for files you don't convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), and if you need more space, you can buy additional storage for $0.25 per GB per year. This makes it easy to backup more of your key files online, from large graphics and raw photos to unedited home videos taken on your smartphone. You might even be able to replace the USB drive you reserved for those files that are too big to send over email.
Combined with shared folders, you can store, organize, and collaborate on files more easily using Google Docs. For example, if you are in a club or PTA working on large graphic files for posters or a newsletter, you can upload them to a shared folder for collaborators to view, download, and print.
You can also search for document files you've uploaded or that have been shared with you just like you do with your Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs. And you'll be able to view many common document file types with the Google Docs viewer.
To learn how businesses can take advantage of this new functionality, check out the post on the Enterprise Blog.
As always, we’d love your feedback and if you have any questions, please check out our help page. This feature will be enabled for your account over the next couple of weeks — look for the bubble notification when you sign in to Google Docs.

I have already bought storage for picasa web albums. Can that storage be shared for docs too ?
Yes, the storage is shared between Picasa Web Albums, Gmail and Google Docs. The storage page will be updated later today to reflect the addition of Google Docs.
As a Google Apps Education Edition administrator, will we be able to turn off this feature? Or a least limit the file types?
Finally! Thank you!

Assuming this will soon be available via 3rd party tools for backup (competing w/ Amazon S3) I'd like to know if there are anticipated transfer costs.
I hope Google ties this in to Youtube as well -- add a checkbox to video uploads to "Save original video file to Google Docs". That would be AWESOME!
Anyone knows what 3rd party softs are available now (or will be) to sync files between my pcs and Googler Docs storage?
txs.
Tax center: Now that tax season is coming, and lot of people spend lot of time managing their bank/brokerage 1099 forms (ie forms on "bank interest" from different banks) etc. How can google docs/spreadsheets help in this whole tax process ? Things that will help : ability to convert of pdf to google doc format, is needed, since pdf viewing etc is slow and consumes lots of computer memory/resources. Also google docs will then provide ability to edit such documents and remove unwanted material in the doc, so as to make analysis of 1099 forms etc easier. And if I have an online site that does my taxes, then the pdf for final return can be downloaded directly to google docs (maybe in chrome or other browser), instead of local desktop. Also please provide tax calculator gadgets, sample templates for tax schedule D capital gains/losses etc.

Google Docs:
a) When I am editing a Google Doc that has images and would like to save an image to my desktop, that is not possible. When I select that image, and right-click mouse, options are to cut, copy, etc image, but not to save image to desktop. So I have to sign out of Google and then view the same doc link in non-editable mode, and then click on image and "Save to Desktop"
b) Copy and paste of Google Doc (containting bold face, italics, etc), onto the Blogger message posting (while creating Blogger message new post), does not work. It copies over text etc, but removes bold face, italics, etc.
c) I would like to embed a Google Spreadsheet within a website page, similar to embedding a presentation like Google Presentations/www.slideshare.net does; that way, people who look at a spreadsheet at the same website in the same window, can view the doc/presentation flip through it, in the same window, without opening another window. This is currently not possible, and new window needs to be opened for Google Spreadsheet or Doc.
d) Google docs blog posting: When I go to share a doc , and post the doc to blog, it only posts to the first blogger account. I have multiple blogs in my blogger account, but google docs does not ask me which blog to post to; it posts the doc to the first blog of my blogger account.
e) Google Docs should have ability to create wiki-able sections in my blogger.com blog, where viewers can edit some data along with other viewers and bloggers. Lets say I want to create a list of nice local restaurants and post it within my blog as a blogpost, and want the post to be appendable/modifiable by my viewers, so they can also add in their list of restaurants, etc. Currently, this is not possible in Google docs/blogger. I can definitely create a link to the editable google doc in blogger, but I would like to EMBED the doc in a blogpost for editing my anyone.
f) Ability to define right-click on any phone number in spreadsheet or document, and call an application like Google Voice to make the phone call : I have a google spreadsheet that has names and phone numbers of all my friends. I would like to easily make phone call (using a voip software, like that of webcalldirect.com ) to anyone in that spreadsheet, without having to enter the phone numbers in that voip software executable. Right now, this is not possible and the process is tedious. It will be great if you can help automate this.
g) Search :I should not have to press enter for search results: http://www.xobni.com/support/ : for example , you can type "gmail" or something and not have to press enter key to see results. So besides autocomplete, it offers interactive search results.
h) Search : When I search for something, it should also show a preview of the search results, so I do not have to open the doc or spreadsheet, to view the search result. For example, google hompage search at www.google.com provides 4-line preview of search results, so one can quickly arrive at conclusion which of the docs shown in the results are worth opening.
i) Voice chat or phone calls to folks who are sharing docs/spreadsheets with me, at the point of viewing of docs/spreadsheets itself, simply by right clicking on their name : For example, in Microsoft sharepoint when there are documents etc, by right clicking on the names of the people there, one can call them either on messenger or phone them at their work or mobile numbers etc, without having to look up their numbers etc. This is great productivity improvement.

Google online storage, finally! Will it feature differential up/downloads the way rsync or JungleDisk does? And will it be possible to map it to a drive so that we can upload and download files using common file managers?
I would like a folder on my computer to be able to Sync with Google docs storage. This way, any time I and anything to the folder OR edit a file in that folder it will automatically be backed up to Google Docs.
Similar to what Dropbox does
This seems to me like it's more and more like the "G-Drive" everyone's been talking about and wanting. The ability to upload any sort of files is awesome, but I'm boggled as to why 250 megs is the limit - I mean, GMail offers 7.4GB of limit for emails, Microsoft's SkyDrive gives me 25gigs, and most free services will start off with 2 gigs to whet your appetite. For me, 250 megs is a 5-year-old USB key... What gives?
It's 1GB total space, and 250MB per file. Read the post next time?
@Lucas: 250Mb per file. Your total upload limit is how much space you own with Google (Gmail+picasa)
Awesome! Finally!
Lucas:
Storage Limits:
See: https://www.google.com/accounts/purchasestorage
This is a great feature. If you make it Dropbox like in functionality (keep it synced with a local folder), it's a killer feature. Thanks guys!
Oh yeah, if this had Dropbox style functions by syncing a folder, that'd be great.
Cloud Hero (cloudhero.com) uploads, downloads and syncs files to Google Docs.
Now it checks for file types that Google Docs was storing. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
We will update for all file types.
Excellent, thanks for this.
Now if I were to upload my music collection, would I be able to somehow gain access to these files via an API so I could essentially build my own streaming music player?
Ah right, I see, 1gig. A bit better, still not what I'd expect. It's a start, I guess, though!
Thanks for the corrections!
@Joen
That's a really good idea!
The 250MB limit per file means I still need an separate solution for HD video from my digital cameras.
Will have to stick with Amazon S3.
dropbox gives you 2gb to start. i'm just saying...
Will you have an application like Dropbox that will sync the files?
This is awsome, great news guys cant wait!
I'm a songwriter and that's a very cost effective way of storing and sharing session data (from a disaster recovery point of view its awesome!!)
Will there be any bandwidth limit?
I have an apps for domain acc and a normal google acc.
On my normal acc. I have subscribed for extra storage for Picasa.
From what I read the apps/dom acc will allow me to subscribe for additional syncing functionality.
I would very much like to get all of this functionality from just one acc. Am I likely to get what I want?
The Google Documents List API will support this new feature. I expect someone to create an app for Dropbox-like interaction.
What I'm curious about is whether or not I could use Google Docs to host podcast audio files.
How about synchronization with Youtube. I want to upload my videos at one place and still have access to them. Based on the number of monetized viewers, Google can give discounts on storage of big video files. Also, if users upload DivX, Mp3 files that many other users have already uploaded, the storage cost should be free. Google should release a new Google Uploader client software that quickly analyses the file before uploading it to see if Google already has a copy of it and doesn't need to upload it again. Then also, provide video file encoding to other formats and bitrates, including online video editing, integration of watermarks, intro/outros and available for direct download within Youtube. Then also allow Youtube users re-upload newer better quality versions of existing videos.
$5/20GB per year is a fair price for high availability in the files. Though low availability backup option with cold storage at about $5/50GB per year or $100/1TB per year, which could for example be used to storage uncompressed videos and only "wake up" the drive when it is needed for short periods of time.
Does this FINALLY mean also that MS Office files (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) can be stored also WITHOUT conversion to Google Docs format?! I keep my fingers crossed hoping for the best...
Timo, yes!
Will I be able to allow a client to upload an image file to my account? I'd like to be able to give someone that maybe doesn't have a Google Account, access to upload a photo to my Google Account. Will or is this possible?
Chris
@Chris, I assume as long as it's in a shared folder, yes. I also assume you could use collaborative albums in Picasa.
Would love to see support for third party storage solutions. I'm very happy with Dropbox, so it would be really nice to see my Dropbox folders in Google Docs.
Ricardo, check this from Google Enterprise Blog (third party tools):
- Memeo Connect for Google Apps is a new desktop application that offers an easy way to access, migrate, and synchronize files to Google Docs across multiple computers. (PC and Mac)
- Syncplicity offers businesses automated back-up and file management with Google Docs. (PC)
- Manymoon is an online project management platform that makes it simple to organize and share tasks and documents with coworkers and partners, including uploading files to Google Docs.
When is this coming? I can finally dump Microsoft sky drive and use Google's cloud. I need dates..
@Bill, read the last paragraph.
Will there be a 1000 folder with 1000 items limitation like Picasa? Do you plan to offer a mass uploader?
Woohoo the GDrive has arrived!!
I just uploaded a JPG to see if it works. It accepted the JPG. However, when I clicked on the All Items tab to see how the JPG displays it shows up as a Document. And then when I clicked on the new "document" it opened up a Google Document with the JPG inserted as an image in the document. Needless to say, that doesn't solve any of our storage "problems". Is this a quirk or how it's going to work moving forward?
Do programmatic uploads work now? Right now, Fireuploader and other tools can't even upload PDF files, let alone anything else.
Will we be able to see all of the pictures that we uploaded into picasa web folders inside our google docs file structure, and add images to the one "folder" through either path-way?
AWESOME!
I can't WAIT to use this with my students in my high school classroom
I am going to get them to show the REST of the teachers around here how it will revolutionize educational practices!!!
I am also curious about bandwidth constraints, if any, that will be imposed.
Also what about versioning of files or as it is currently known in Google Docs as revision history?
Will this keep older versions of a file if you upload one with the same name?
Yep, like a lot of people here this service would be a lot more interesting if it offered sync with local files. Automatic versioning would be the icing on the cake. Until I see those features I'll continue to pay Dropbox.
This is awesome news...but I still lean toward a more open/flexible service such as this one: www.datastorageunit.com
Thats great news, but could we have a scaled priing model? At 1tb and above it stops to make sense!
Thank you Google! It makes life in "the cloud" just a little bit more easy =).
Why has this been such a long and drawn out process?
Picasa syncing needs major work.
What's with GDrive already. Although it would take a lot for me to leave dropbox.
Google, is it time to aquire Dropbox?
Then maybe development would go faster :-)
It would be great if it has,
- syncing like DropBox
- API like Amazon S3
Just wondering how secure will this be? It sounds like a dream, but would sensitive docs be secure?
It's not at all secure unless your password is secure. Someone stole my google account and google has not helped me at all to restore that account because it's all automated when you generate a complaint. I have had google docs and used them since 2006 and someone just stole my account. All my documents are GONE. Google has not helped me. At all. I hope this gets someone's attention so they can help me.
If you use this feature, just be very sure you do not use an English word as a password because it can be hacked. And if it's stolen, google doesn't have ample support to restore it to you. Over three years of my hard work is gone.
All my google-linked services: youtube, blogger -- all gone. My website? Gone. I put too many of my internet eggs into the google basket because I trusted them to be there for me. They aren't.
I'm reading that this feature will only be available to Google Apps Premier users. When can I as an individual have access to the muli-file-type upload feature?
Wow Karla, that's horrible. I hope Google can help you restore access to your account.
To everyone else, heed her story and keep backup copies of everything! On your computer, on a USB drive, with services like Dropbox or Backupify, don't leave it to chance.
What about figuring out some kind of failsafe for protecting account from malicious or arbitrary deletion? I have a friend that has had her google identity deleted, this means losing 3+ years of Gmail, Google Docs with her novel drafts, her Youtube videos, the works. She can't talk to a human being at Google about this problem because her only recourse is automated forms that are flawed and stuck in an endless loop.
I am actually a paying customer, I have paid for extra storage and I am in the process of switching my company to use Google Apps for domains and this really worries me.
at last
I already store plenty of documents including PowerPoint and PDFs in Google Docs.
The one feature I've been waiting for is the ability to edit docs from my iPhone. When I view them, they are in read-only mode.
Waiting anxiously for it to be enabled on my account... common google.
cool
aindreas.com
Hi from the Syncplicity Team. Syncplicity supports Dropbox-like synchronization of your desktop directly with Google Docs.
Word, Spreadsheet, and Presentation documents synchronize with any Google Account. Arbitrary files require a Google Premier Account.
You can try Syncplicity out here for yourself: http://bit.ly/6yf7HH
Syncplicity looks good the pricing not so much. The only difference I am seeing is the use of the Docs API. Am I missing something?
The GDrive has arrived!! Who knew it would be smaller than the drive on my keychain.
I'll stick with my free 25 GB SkyDrive that I've had for the past 23 months. It works with SkyDrive Explorer, a free gadget to integrate it with Windows Explorer.
JonW, for $5 a year, you could have 20GB. How does that compare?
This is a awesome work. I am sure millions of users would love to see this feature.
Just wondering, if there is a upload manager that supports "Resume broken Upload/downloads"? It will be good if there is. This will be helpful when network failure or other special circumstances happens.
Thumbs up, you guys are so great!
Love google as always!
50mb files that's rough. That and being Microsoft makes it worthless. 50? What century are we in? This is why Microsoft fails at everything 10 steps behind. Although I will give them 7 as thier ultimate accomplishment. Though there was plenty of time after XP to accomplish this especially with minimal competition.
LOVE it, Google Rocks
Will uploaded files to Google Docs be subject to the executable restriction as it is in Gmail?
Any chance the storage size will be lifted? It's pretty small compared to skydrive which I use for this sort of thing.
Will this be made available for those using the free version of Google Apps for my domain?
This is step one! A (osx) desktop application (like Dropbox / Zumo) would be very nice. If Google would offer that I would buy extra storage.
It would be helpful if someone form Google could confirm if a application like that is in the works... I almost bought Zumodrive yesterday.
Google is just copying Microsoft here, as usual, isn't it?
Google Docs file storage is just an attempt to copy SkyDrive.
Of course, Google Docs has been a rip-off of MS Office all along -- especially the web-based MS Office platform which was first announced by Bill Gates in 2005.
It's impressive how through ingenious PR Google retains its image as an innovator. Leaving aside search, which Google has been dining out on from the start, it's fundamentally a copycat company.
Can you create a folder and upload all pages for a website -- run the website out of Google Docs Folder rather than FTP to a hosting site?
How do you prevent illegal activity such as tenorism and copyright infringement? File upload sites are regularly used to make available warez (stolen or cracked software, especially computer games), unlicensed movies and TV shows, books, japanese "manga" comics and jyhad traning materials associated with evil tenor groups worldwide!
Excellent and amazing, thanks for this.
Oh my God! Finally! Thank you Google. Like always. And I love you! :) Muah.
gr8 service, keep it up google.
http://bharatclick.com
you are wrong - or they are wrong
http://googleappsupdates.blogspot.com/2010/01/documents-list-api-upload-any-file-and.html
there written - that it is ONLY for Premier Edition.
Whom can we trust?!
Will you be able to upload PDFs larger than 10MB as a PDF file in Docs or will it need to go under the new folder?
That's great news. Too bad my employer blocks Google Docs :(
Ah. Nice at last I can stop using Skydrive. (and their 50MB limit!)
You CAN synk Google docs with a folder etc. on your pc. No problem.
Use Gladinet Cloud Desktop. www.gladinet.com I have used it for two years and Im loving it.
You have to pay for it though, but it is SO worth it!
harald
Txs Jorge,
That's all I needed!
Karla's comment about her gmail account being hacked scared me - time to make one of those pain-in-the-ass complicated passwords. Losing my google account stuff would be a nightmare. Any sign of them selling those authentication keyfobs ever?
Anyone knows if it's possible to set google docs to use https by default much like gmail? I noticed that http seems to be the default protocol used.
Thanks for any tips or pointers
Still not available new sizes.
How we request additional storage, these companies are so difficult in terms of communication, i mean if you are offering any services, please advistize it. Specially i have found google so weired about their products. Most of their services are public not much people know about it, Thanks
What's with the slow roll out? I tried to upload stuff to Docs, had to go with Skydrive.
Great!
Thank you
I'm fine with Gspace extension for Firefox. I use Gmail available space to backup and retrieve my documents. Any chance to see that extension working with Google Chrome? I asked already to Fon Labs, but it seems to me that this announcement is maybe the death of that possibility...
Not available yet.. Really need it!
Checkout digitalbucket.net as a great cloud storage applications. We are currently working on a google docs integration but you can also get much more features with digitalbucket's full service packages...
www.digitalbucket.net
I've been wait for this day for years :)
Hey, google guys, I guess you do not know Slax Drive yet, right? :)
2gb for free would be really better... like Dropbox offers to its users
No wonder that are located in Mountain View!
A first and true "cumulus nimbus" Google, great shot, I love this organization!
Since Google Docs let us upload files > 250MB, is Google going to add the feature of splitting up the file like 7z? Say we upload a 500MB, Google Docs then just automatically treats it as two file uploads each 250MB instead of making us split it and upload twice.
Thank you Google!
So glad it's shared with my paid Picasa storage!
When (if) it will be possible to add attachment to Gmail directly from Google docs, and save attachment from Gmail to Google docs?
Any plan for group space for Google apps premier addition accessible to all users (something like NAS in network)?
When and how do we apply ?
(Forgive me, I also posted this in a smaller Enterprise blog. Then I saw this more active blog.)
Will be possible to transfer my iTunes library?
I'm looking at this from the perspective of a copyright owner concerned about music, films, etc being uploaded and shared through google docs.
1. Will Google be applying any kind of content detection to the files uploaded - for instance, YouTube prevents material from being uploaded if it matches something that needs to be filtered. Any prospect of that with google docs?
2. Is there any prospect of Google accounts being banned should they be found to offer or repeatedly offer copyrighted content through Google Docs?
3. Will there be any limit on the number of times a file could be downloaded or the speed of those downloads?
thanks....
For me it is important to be able to access the files, including music or photos, with my ID.
Glad to see the storage - too bad they do not support .zip files. Maybe let users know they aren't supported before it finishes uploading.
Has the world ever told Google we love them soooooooo much =]?
Google = Awesome
Google = Awesome
I suggest naming this service Google Online Documents. Then promote the service with the catch phrase, "I know my data is saved because I committed it to G.O.D."
Where can i upload my files on google docs
in my docs account , in the same way that i did previously ?
I've had skydrive for a long time now, but never really used it because of the 50mb upload limit. I'm glad google has a 250mb upload limit. What would be nice (and reasonable for today's technology) is a 1gb upload limit with 20gb free storage. Well my biggest need, though, is for a free software like skydrive explorer. Basically, mapping a drive and being able to move entire folders and files, drag/drop, etc... like it was just another folder on my PC. Anyone know of such a thing? Links please.
Sean, dropbox allows you to do this and there is a 2GB limit with a free account. Not bad. http://dropbox.com
Sean, CloudHero lets you do this with free version.
$10 purchase for automatic sync to Google docs.
CloudHero is NOT yet updated for this new Google storage of all files types, but promised.
@Russell,
The functionality is still being rolled out. What you experienced with uploading the JPG is the old/existing functionality which stuffs JPGs into a Google Doc. When the new functionality is live, you should be able to upload a JPG normally and have it stored as a JPG.
When introduction of the new functionality will be finished?
Google Apps Premier customers should see the change today. Other customers should see the change within a few weeks.
If you are running linux you can use software called goofs to create a mount to google docs on your filesystem so you can access your docs through your file manager. It is free software available at http://code.google.com/p/goofs/. It also works with picasa and other google services.
to Sean,
" Well my biggest need, though, is for a free software like skydrive explorer. Basically, mapping a drive and being able to move entire folders and files, drag/drop, etc... like it was just another folder on my PC. Anyone know of such a thing? Links please. "
I'd suggest http://memeoconnect.com/ will satisfy all your needs. Please check this out.
P.S. I could not email you because you have your public profile share is disabled. Nobody can see your email address.
for how long will google docs host my files?
For as long as you keep your account with Google.
Brisvirgo,
Check out CloudHero.com
Free to upload and manage files and folders. Automatically duplicates file structure making it easy to find things.
$10 purchase for auto synch
Does Google Docs now, will be updated to handle all files types with new Google "storage"
How will I know when cloudhero does this? Is there a blog or news page? Anyway to recieve e-mail updates?
Will I be able to upload an mp3 podcast and allow people to stream it from blogger, wordpress, or iTunes?
Sean,
We JUST started at Twitter page, and have not even announced it to our customers yet.
You can follow /cloudhero
An update- I was told after uploading one of my podcasts that "sorry, we do not currently support MP3 files"
This is an exciting news and we are going to add this storage option to CloudBerry Backup in addition to Amazon S3
I'm really happy to hear this, but I think that now that any file can be uploaded, docs should show how much of your space is being used up by non-convertible documents, and how much of your capacity of 5k documents + 1k spreadsheets is being used.
We need 1Gb per file at least, 250mb is not enought!!
I enjoy Google Docs very much and this storage is great.
My family, however, can't use it. They write large books and essays which regularly exceed the 500kb document limit, and they don't want to split up their projects across multiple files!
I've directed them to zoho.com which works perfectly for them, but of course they don't have the benefit of it being accessible from their Google accounts (and accessible for collaboration by others with same).
If you would just increase the individual size limit of docs then it'd be far more usable for folks working with large documents.
Perfect !
Can you update your tools for desktop upload?
http://googledataapis.blogspot.com/2008/01/easily-upload-your-documents-to-google.html
Thanks in advance
Google docs is rendered pointless if you can't upload .zip files. As someone who needs to store my portfolio online I'm looking for a doc repository that can handle simple formats. Too bad Google. You lose my vote! :(
You know what i don't like about Docs? It keeps changing the format of my Microsoft Word documents...It is so frustrating because i have to keep changing them..urrr....
But I do love Google Docs in general.
Question about purchase of additional storage space. The site lists 400GB ($100) and 1TB ($256). Will you be able to purchase incrementally between 400GB & 1TB, say 500GB, or once you hit 400GB do you need to jump (w/2.5x cost)to the 1TB level.
Thabns
@Claire,
You will be able to upload ZIP files (and files of any format, for that matter) once the functionality is activated for your account.
@chris,
Once the functionality is activated for your account, you will have two options for uploading Word Docs. The first is to upload the doc such that it can be edited online. If, however, you only wish to store it online and wish to keep using Word to edit the document, you will also have the option to just store the Word doc, keeping the formatting intact. You won't be able to edit it online that way, but you will be able to download it.
@Trans-Americas Journey,
When you upgrade, you must upgrade to the given tier. However, you can upgrade at any time and you do not lose any of the money you previously spent doing so. Let's say you are currently paying $100/yr for 400 GB. Then, after six months, you decide to upgrade to 1 TB at $256/yr. Since you only used half of your existing plan, the other half ($50) will be credited to the new plan. Then, since upgrading doesn't necessarily extend the expiration of your plan, you'd only pay half of the new plan to maintain the remaining six months. So, $128-$50 = $78. This means, at the six-month mark, you'd pay approximately $78 to increase your storage from 400 GB to 1 TB. Then, after six more months, it will be time to renew and it will cost the normal $256/yr to maintain the 1 TB tier.
This is great, but I wish I would receive the ability to upload any file, when you said 'over the next few weeks' you really meant it- I'm still waiting for the feature to become available on my account...
@Bob
Thanks for your response.
Though I was very excited about the prospect of cloud storage through Google Docs -- more affordable than Amazon and persumably more reliable than both Mozy & Carbonite (both of which LOST dozens of GB of my data and I walked away from those services)--
However, a jump from 400GB and $100to 1TB and $256 is an absolutley unreasonable jump w/o any intermediate tiers.
For example, I need a a little less than 500GB of storage and at this time and I expect that it will be a few years untill I may need maybe 700GB, let alone 1TB. Meanwhile in that time I would be needing to pay 2X the perGB average of a most typical storage scinarios with less than 400GB since below that there are more reasonable and logical tiers...but 400GB to 1TB without a tier in between???? Not to mention needing 500GB of storage no longer makes google docs much more attractive that other services such as Amazon S3.
@Nick Cachet,
Yes. Unfortunately, "few weeks" literally means just that. There are a lot of accounts and a lot of servers to update.
@Trans-Americas Journey,
You're right. Each tier is still priced at $0.25 per GB. So, it makes little sense to have specific tiers. Instead, it might be nice to , perhaps, add 100 GB at a time... for $25/yr each. It is something worth looking into.
Ummm, when will the feature be available for Latin American accounts? I'd really love to get rid of my USB pendrive and start working with ALL files not only the docs... Silly me I tried to upload PSD's to my docs account.
Your article is very good.I like it very much.

I love love love dropbox. I hope Google can convince me why I should leave it for this...I am listening. I hope its the G-Drive with sync...
Thanks @Bob,
As you say the pricing structure is consistent @ $25/year/100GB, so hopefully Google will reassess such a bizarre tier structure.
Thanks
I am not sure if I have received the update yet or not.
When I go to the upload folder is says 'You can upload files up to 250 MB. Files converted to Google Docs have smaller limits.' It says nothing about the amount of space there is left to use on my account (as shown in the Q&A on Google).
But when I then try to upload another pdf-document I get the message '(Quota exceeded)'.
So, I seem to have received the update regarding the possibility to upload larger files but not the update regarding the amount of storage and the removal of the number of pdf-documents that I am allowed to upload.
Have I understood it right and should I only wait a couple of weeks or am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance
DP
Me too. Bought a picasa webspace. Nice that i can share the space to a variety of stuff i already have in google.

Take the functionality of DropBox (especially now that you can define your drop box folder (doing away with 'My Dropbox') and add the current functionality of Google Docs (and now the storage & the cheep cost of adding more), and what do you have..? The PERFECT storage, synchronization and sharing application. Hey Google - how are you gonna make this more functional (GDrive..?!?)
It's great that we can now upload any file type. I'm Ok with buying storage space. Unfortunately, my google docs is with a Google Apps Standard account. I'm willing to pay for more space. But, can't figure out how (or if it is possible). Any ideas?
1 week from announce. Still not available. :(
This is for non-Apps users, right? I already have storage, but Docs still isn't showing the option to upload any file.
yeah!!! can't wait - you guys do a great job
Please, can you bring autocomplete back? It's really useful, everyone would thank you guys.
Zoho spreadsheet already has it, you don't you?
Hi, everybody got the update?
No, I've got no updates yet. Waiting...
My "docs" was updated 2 days ago, my partner's has not yet. Our domain's email is hosted at Google.
You will see "New! Upload any file" in (red) text menu at top left of docs page.
I don't know how many are being updated each day, but I guess about 7% (to complete all in two weeks)
Oops, sorry. Top RIGHT text menu for "New! Upload any file" in red
Truly awesome, future is looking goooood!
Si que mal yo estoy deseoso de que llegue pronto esta aplicación!!! Vamos que esperan porque dilatan tanto?

Hi,is this mean for example 100 gigs of storage cost 25 USD per year? It will be great deal, because a lot of online file storage competitors have cost about 40-50 USD per year or more..
I still have not seen an answer to: How can I use google docs in a very basic manner - that is to store docs and then to email them from GMail? I know docs has an email function but it is very rudimentary. I need to have a logo in the body and other graphics that I use in GMail.
Could we add a file in this storage place to a new mail as an attachment in GMail without download it on the computer and updloading it to the new email message ?
You know some kind of file like CV, are sometimes uploads several times in a day for diffents emails and it can be a long task to do if you have a bad internet connection.
More than that, with this kind of features, it will be possible to send a file with GMail that is stored en GoogleDocs with your mobilephone...
Sorry for my bad english, I am French...
@Stéphane, Currently, the only way to email a Google Docs document without downloading it to PC is to do it through the Google Docs interface (Share / Email as attachment). Many are asking for a way to do this from gmail directly. But, feature does not exist yet.
Is their going to be a preview facility for non google docs formats?
The 500KB limit per uploaded doc has to be the most annoying restriction. This limit to google docs almost makes every other feature worthless...
I would even pay additional $$$ for tiered file size limit increases on imported word docs....
Fantastic, to day I have Red message "New UpLoad Any File !" and I'm in Italy.
Could I stream my Music?

Please remove the 500KB limit per uploaded document. This prevents many of us to really migrate to Google docs, given that we have loads of reports (like word or presentation) much bigger than that! Why are you setting up a limit in google doc, when you don't in gmail? Doesnt' make sense. Nevertheless, good stuff, keep going, we like what you do!
That's really gr8!!
@Jérôme,
@Jambe,
@xbill,
The 500 kb limit for documents only applies to converted documents. The limit is due to the current technical limitations of the online editor. As it is improved, this limit could be increased.
In the meantime, if you only want to store and share a document which is over 500 kb, you can do so by unchecking the "Convert documents, spreadsheets & presentations to Google Docs format." checkbox on the upload page. You will be able to preview the document online using the viewer, share the document with others, and download the document. However, an application installed on your computer will be needed to make modifications to the document.
If the editor has the limit - then increase it! Or why not offer an alternative way to import or automatically prep large existing documents?
A typical word doc has way more than 500K - unless it is a very simple 1-2 page document.
Google docs makes little sense to use as a company wide repository if it can't store most of the documents that need to be shared.
Also - it is no easy task to hand convert/edit existing Word documents from a local network share.
We have many documents with screen shots, graphics, etc - that we would like to put in a central repository with Google Docs- but to use the workaround you suggested would mean re-editing at least 40-50 documents by hand!
Just using Google Docs just as a virtual upload repository defeats the purpose of Google Docs. It is the tracking/collaboration/editing features of Google Docs that has real value.
BUT with a 500K import limit - it is virtually useless.
Is it that google can't see the forest because of the trees??!?!?
I will say it again - to make Google Docs a viable solution- the 500KB limit for existing word documents HAS to be removed.
