Technical Issues

Get help on using hulu.com.

To enjoy videos at Hulu, you will need the following software installed on your computer:
  • Adobe Flash Player 10.0.22 or above
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or above, Firefox 2.0 or above, or Safari 3.0 or above
  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Microsoft Windows Vista, Macintosh OS X v10.4 or above, or Linux
  • JavaScript and Cookies must also be enabled.
In addition, you will need an internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. Our videos stream at 480Kbps or 700Kbps, and we'll adjust our stream based on your bandwidth, but we recommend a downstream bandwidth of 1000Kbps or higher for the smoothest playback experience. You can test your downstream bandwidth at many websites. Search for "bandwidth test" on the web to find many of the most popular bandwidth test websites.
Some of our videos now come in a 1,000 Kbps, H.264, 480p stream. You can recognize these streams by the 480p Hi-Res button that will appear in the lower right of the player. To watch these high resolution streams, you'll need to upgrade to Flash Player 10.0.22, and we recommend a downstream bandwidth of 1,500Kbps for the smoothest playback experience.
You'll also need Flash Player 10.0.22 to watch the 720p clips in our HD Gallery. Those are encoded at 2,500Kbps, and we recommend a downstream bandwidth of over 3,500Kbps to stream those, or you can pause and allow the streams to buffer before playing them.
You can upgrade to the Flash Player 10.0.22 here - http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash.

If you cannot hear audio from Hulu videos, please try the following steps:
  • Verify that the volume settings in the Hulu player are correctly set.
  • Verify that your computer speaker volumes and settings are correctly set.
  • Verify that other media speakers such as Windows Media Player or Quicktime can output audio.
  • Restart the browser and try watching Hulu videos again.
  • If that does not work, restart the computer and try watching Hulu videos.
Alternatively, the following steps have also helped our users when the steps above didn't fix the audio issue.
  • Go to the Hulu.com homepage.
  • Right-click on the big video image in the middle of the screen and select the "Settings..." menu option.
  • Click the third tab with the folder icon. You should see a menu that says "Local Storage".
  • Drag the slider all the way to "0" and then click "OK".
  • Drag the slider back up to "100KB" and then click "Close".
If these steps do not resolve your issue, please reinstall Flash by following these steps:

If after reinstalling Flash, you are still encountering audio issues, please contact us at support@hulu.com (subject line: Audio Issues).

This is currently a limitation with the Flash Player which we're using to stream our content. As a short-term workaround, you can maximize the pop out player instead. This will achieve nearly the same effect and allow you to work on the other monitor.
We're continuing to investigate possible solutions as we want to take good care of our multi-tasking users.

In some cases Flash is not correctly installed and cannot be accurately detected. Please reinstall Flash by following these steps:

There is a known issue with Adobe's latest Flash Player's hardware acceleration feature and certain graphics cards. You can turn off the hardware acceleration feature by the following steps:
  • Go to Hulu.com and watch a video.
  • Right-click on the player and select "Settings".
  • Click to the first tab in the settings window and uncheck the "Enable hardware acceleration" box.
  • Click "Close" and try watching any Hulu video in full screen mode again.

Until we are able to resolve various business and legal issues surrounding international streaming, we utilize a technology to limit access to US-based users only. If our technology is incorrectly recognizing your region, please follow the link here.

If you are still experiencing video stream issues after confirming that you have the minimum software and bandwidth requirements as listed above, please follow the link here.

Hulu will buffer a small portion of a show, movie, or clip when you pause the video during playback. You can see how much of a video has been loaded with the buffer progress bar that appears in the Hulu player while a video is paused. When the bars reach "full," about five minutes of the video have been loaded. Due to legal reasons, Hulu currently does not buffer more than a small portion of a video at a given time.

You can switch to full-screen mode while watching Hulu videos that are embedded on any site. While the video is playing, simply click the button which appears in the upper right corner of the embedded video, next to the search bar, for full-screen playback. Hulu's keyboard shortcuts &emdash; "f" to go to full screen, "space" to pause, "escape" to return to normal view &emdash; also work in this mode. Note: this feature works best when using a single monitor.

Hulu allows you to embed videos from its HD Gallery onto your personal blog or Web site. While the HD video is playing, click on the "Embed" button that appears when you move your mouse over the Hulu video player. Click on "copy to clipboard" to select the embed code from the pop-up screen, then paste it into your site's publishing program. A 640 pixel x 368 pixel HD video player will be embedded on your page, giving you and your readers access to your favorite HD videos directly from your blog or Web site.

Hulu offers a number of ways to rearrange videos in your queue. You can drag and drop videos to the desired spot — just hover your mouse over any video title, press and hold your mouse button, and drag the item up or down in your queue. Move as many videos as you like, and then press the "save order" button to save your changes.

You can also rearrange the playback order by renumbering the videos using the input boxes in the "Play Order" column, or using the "move to top" arrows located next to the input boxes. Finally, you can sort your queue by show title, expiration date, or airdate, by clicking on the column titles — just remember to press the "save order" button when all of your updates have been made.

In Apple Dashboard and Safari, you may have to change a few settings to enable you to see your queue.
  1. Open Safari.
  2. Go into the Preferences, located under "Safari" in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Go to the Security tab.
  4. In the "Accept Cookies" section, select "Always".
