Washington, D.C. - Secretary Napolitano authorized the temporary activation of up to 900 reserve U.S. Coast Guard service men and women to bolster the more than 500 Coast Guard personnel already serving in Haiti in support of the U.S. government's response to the devastation caused by the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Humanitarian Parole Announced for Certain Haiti Orphans

Washington, D.C. - Secretary Janet Napolitano, in coordination with the U.S. Department of State, today announced a humanitarian parole policy allowing orphaned children from Haiti to enter the United States temporarily on an individual basis to ensure that they receive the care they need—as part of the U.S. government's ongoing support of international recovery efforts after last week's earthquake.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) Granted for Haitian Nationals

Washington, D.C. - "As part of the Department's ongoing efforts to assist Haiti following Tuesday's devastating earthquake, I am announcing the designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals who were in the United States as of January 12, 2010. This is a disaster of historic proportions and this designation will allow eligible Haitian nationals in the United States to continue living and working in our country for the next 18 months."

In New Orleans, Vice President Biden Announces Loan Forgiveness Program to Assist Local Governments Along the Gulf Coast

New Orleans, La. - Today at the St. Bernard Recreation Center in New Orleans, Vice President Joe Biden announced new procedures to allow local governments in Louisiana and Mississippi that received Special Community Disaster Loans (Special CDL) following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to apply for loan forgiveness. To qualify, these municipalities must have experienced operating deficits during the three full fiscal years following the storms.
