listen to Have One On Me

Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me is finally out today, and NPR is offering a full album stream here. If the prospect of 3 LPs of new Newsom seems daunting, start with the incredible "Baby Birch" and the heartbreakingly intimate "Go Long" -- two of the album's defining tracks, both of which today's Pitchfork review inexplicably failed to mention -- or Newsom's perfect Joni-esque jaunt through Laurel Canyon, "Good Intentions Paving Company." Have One On Me is available on beautifully-packaged 3xLP here.

premiere: Primary 1 | "the blues (feat. nina persson)"

London's Primary 1 has been on our radar lately -- mostly thanks to a recent Memory Tapes remix and a nice collection of free demos -- and we were just sent this track from his forthcoming full-length, which is due sometime in the Fall. We're told the as-yet-untitled LP features collabs with Diplo, Gonzales, Zdar (who has produced Phoenix, Cut Copy, and the new Rapture album), and others, including this wistful and extremely catchy duet with Nina Persson of A Camp/the Cardigans, highlighted by some melancholy horns and Persson's familiar dreamy voice:

premiere: White Hinterland | "No Logic"

We premiered White Hinterland's gorgeous "Icarus" last month, and now Dead Oceans has hooked us up with further evidence of Casey Dienel's unexpected but seamless transformation into seductive minimal R & B/pop star in the form of "No Logic," which is apparently "constructed around a totally acid-fried ukulele part." White Hinterland's awesome Kairos LP is out March 9 on Dead Oceans.

mp3: The Morning Benders | "Excuses"

The Morning Benders just posted up the album version of "Excuses" -- the opening track from their forthcoming Chris Taylor co-produced full-length Big Echo -- for free download on their website. Living up to the glorious instant classic live version is a tall order, but the band delivers in the form of this warm, unabashedly romantic, classic-'60s-pop-informed throwback love song (complete with gorgeous "At Last"-esque strings):

I posted about Amanaz's way sold-out 1975 LP Africa a while back, and it remains one of my favorite musical discoveries of the last few years, so it's worth noting that the record has been reissued by Now-Again, and is now available for purchase in the Stones Throw/Now Again web store. Fuzzed-out Zambian stoner-psych ("Zamrock") from the early '70s, with a dude that sounds like Dikembe Mutombo on lead vocals:

Now-Again is also reissuing WITCH's 1975 Lazy Bones!! LP, and the preview jam for that one is pretty amazing as well:

caveman smack

The enigmatic Dem Hunger (blog commenter of the decade) recently sent over his spaced-out, dizzyingly awesome debut record, Caveman Smack (due out February 23 on Leaving). The label describes it as "Madlib beats bubbling up from a oozing volcano, its Dilla ambience for a nuclear winter," but I'm partial to DH's own apt "description" of this thing:
"GUESS THE WHOLE IDEA IS SOME EARLY HUMAN JUST LAYIN AROUND WITH HIS EYES OUT OF HIS HEAD. ALL SKULL BASHED UP IN THE RIVER. THIS MUSIC SORT OF FLOATIN AROUND INSIDE HIS JAWBONE. THE BONES GET EATEN BY THE SUN, THEN IT ALL GETS SPAT BACK DOWN TO EARTH."
