This computer should use much less power than most other desktops out there. Not only does the Core i3 run on a low voltage already (thanks to its 32nm chip), having the IGP built-in eliminates the need of having another onboard graphics chipset, thereby reducing even more overall power (and another source of heat).
The Inspiron 580s uses the Intel H57 motherboard chipset which is optimized for the new i3 processors. Advantages of the i3 include:
(1) Clock for clock the Core i3 processor is considerably faster than comparable Core 2 Duo and AMD Phenom II processors. At this price point, it is comparable in price as well.
(2) The difference between the i3 and i5 (besides the number of cores) is that i3 does not have TurboBoost (Intel's automatic overclocking). For dual-core processors, this is not significant.
(3) The i3 has an integrated graphics chipset. Must be used in conjunction with an H57, H55, or Q57 chipset motherboard. The performance is similar to Intel's GMA X4500 HD. This helps reduce power consumption even more since there is no need for a graphics chipset on the motherboard.
