Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Approved; First Under New NIH Guidelines

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Initiates Thirteen New Projects to Advance Asthma Control

The NIH is initiating 13 new projects that support collaborative efforts among patients and families, health care providers, and other stakeholders committed to improve the management of asthma — a common and often disabling condition that affects some 23 million Americans, including seven million children under the age of 18. The projects include a range of asthma interventions in diverse communities, including rural, urban, or suburban settings.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. David Blumenthal, HHS' National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, announced today plans to make available $235 million to support an innovative Beacon Community Program.

Surgeon General Declares Thanksgiving as "Family Health History Day"

Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin, today declared Thanksgiving Day 2009 to be the nation's sixth annual "Family Health History Day," when families can make plans for gathering their health history, with the aid of the My Family Health Portrait Web site.
