GroupWise Frequently Asked Questions

What is being done to reduce unwanted email on campus?

The UNT Health Science Center has deployed a new spam filter. The new system is licensed from SurfControl and uses filters which are automatically updated each day. We expect that this will further reduce both the amount of spam and the administration required to combat it.

What should I do with spam that I receive.

Forward these messages as an attachment (this preserves information needed to identify the senders) to: abuse@hsc.unt.edu

I have legitimate mail being marked with SPAM? In the subject line. Who can correct this?

Please forward the email as an attachment to abuse@hsc.unt.edu and we will adjust the dictionary rules.

Do you block email? Where does it go?

There are 3 layers to the spam filter which is only checking incoming email.

  1. The sending IP address is checked against 3 real time block lists and if found is rejected along with the name of the RBL on which it was listed.

  2. The email is evaluated by SurfControl's auto updating spam filter and is quarantined for 90 days if identified as spam.

  3. There is a dictionary filter which looks for certain content. If the score is high enough the email will be marked with SPAM? in the title.

I think an email was stopped by the spam filter, who do I contact?

Call or email the ITS HelpDesk and we will search for the email and release it. We will also work with SurfControl to address the false positive.
