Classic Austria concert features new faculty soloist Nov. 20

What: Classic Austria -- A concert presented by the University of North Texas Collegium Singers and Baroque Orchestra

Featuring faculty soloists Christoph Hammer on fortepiano and Cynthia Roberts on violin. Directed by Richard Sparks and Lyle Nordstrom.

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas Collegium Singers and Baroque Orchestra present Classic Austria, a concert of pieces from the classic era using late 18th-century instruments.

The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 (Friday) in Winspear Performance Hall of the Murchison Performing Arts Center, located along the north side of Interstate 35E at North Texas Boulevard. Tickets are $8 - $10. Call 940-369-7802 or visit www.theMPAC.com.

The concert will feature new associate professor Christoph Hammer as a fortepiano soloist in J. B. Vanhall's Concerto in D major for fortepiano and strings. 

"It is a great pleasure to have Christoph Hammer on the faculty at UNT," said Lyle Nordstrom, director of the early music program at UNT. "He has brought a new excitement and expertise to the early music program, not only in the baroque era, but also the classic era. He is an exciting performer who inspires everyone around him."

Cynthia Roberts, UNT instructor in early violin, will be featured on classic violin in Mozart's Sonata in e minor with Hammer on fortepiano.

Richard Sparks, who joined the UNT faculty this semester as the newest choral conductor, will conduct the Collegium Singers and Baroque Orchestra in Mozart's Missa brevis in F. Lyle Nordstrom, who directs the Baroque Orchestra, will conduct Mozart's Venite populi

 

About Christoph Hammer

Hammer joined the UNT College of Music faculty in Fall 2009 as an associate professor of conducting and ensembles. He teaches harpsichord, fortepiano and keyboard continuo at the undergraduate and graduate levels, coaches student performing ensembles and assists with early music chamber ensembles.  He has served as founder and musical director of the Munich Neue Hofkapelle baroque orchestra and the Residence Festival in Munich, Germany.  He was awarded the Cultural Prize of the State of Bavaria for service in promoting early music.  He has recorded extensively as soloist and conductor with most of the important European radio stations, including Bavarian Radio, Austrian, Czech and Italian National Radio. He has published more than 25 CDs on labels such as ORF Edition Alte Musik, Capriccio, Ars Production and Oehms Classics.

 

About Cynthia Roberts

Roberts is one of America's leading advocates of the Baroque violin. She serves as concertmaster of New York's Concert Royal and Cleveland's Apollo's Fire and makes regular appearances as concertmaster with Paris-based Les Arts Florissant and the New York Collegium. In addition, she performs regularly with North America's most prominent period instrument ensembles, including Tafelmusik, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the Handel & Haydn Society. She has also performed with the London Classical Players, Aston Magna, Mostly Mozart Orchestra of Original Instruments and the Taverner Players, and is currently a principal player of the Carmel Bach Festival. Roberts has been on the UNT faculty since 2000.
