UNT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER SHOWCASES RESEARCH EFFORTS Public Invited to Attend April 5 Event

FORT WORTH, Texas—The latest in local research will be presented during the University of North Texas Health Science Center’s 10th annual Research Appreciation Day Friday, April 5.

More than 150 student and faculty research projects will be presented, including research on Alzheimer’s disease, vision disorders, cancer, public health, physical medicine and heart disease. The investigators will be on hand to share their research findings. The day-long event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the health science center at 817-735-2560.

This year, Thomas R. Kowalski, president of the Texas Healthcare and Bioscience Institute (THBI), will give the keynote address. His presentation will take place at noon in Luibel Hall in the Education and Administration Building. THBI, founded in 1996, is a statewide public policy research and education organization whose purpose is to promote medical research, development, and manufacturing in Texas. THBI’s members consist of leading biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical companies, universities and private research institutions.

In his role with THBI, Kowalski helped garner $300 million from the 77th Texas Legislature to support research activities at health science and academic institutions. He also works with the private industry to bring small business and product development incubator funds to the state. THBI is also working to create a BioInnovation Network.

Research Appreciation Day is an annual opportunity for health science center faculty, staff and students to share research results, explore potential joint research projects and enhance the community's awareness of the research conducted at the health science center.

More than 150 faculty and students have entered their research in this year’s competition. Cash awards will be presented to the top student entries in both the poster and oral competitions. Clinical, basic science and public health entries will be judged separately.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Research Appreciate Day will also feature an exhibit highlighting the competition over the last decade.

Among the variety of work being presented April 5 are:

  • Preventing debilitating eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration
  • Studying the link between estrogen and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Using antioxidants to slow the aging process and improve memory
  • Finding better cancer-fighting therapies
