UNT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER HONORS LAMANNA

FORT WORTH, Texas, September 24, 2001—The University of North Texas Health Science Center honored one of osteopathic medicine’s longtime advocates, Joseph L. LaManna, DO, Sept. 14 as it welcomed its newest class of students.

Dr. LaManna received an honorary degree in public service from the health science center during its annual White Coat and Convocation Ceremony. During the ceremony, 322 incoming students received white coats to symbolize their entry into the academic health community.

This is not the first time the UNT Health Science Center has recognized Dr. LaManna’s contributions. In 1991, he received the institution’s highest honor, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Founders Medal, for his work in the osteopathic profession and his support of the school.

His 50 years of community service began in 1951 after he graduated from Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and started his own medical practice serving southwest Dallas County. Among his many community activities, Dr. LaManna has been the guiding influence behind Dallas Southwest Osteopathic Physicians, a non-profit foundation created as a result of the sale of Stevens Park Hospital in 1983.

DSWOP’s initial assets of $7 million have now grown to over $19 million. The organization now awards grants in excess of $800,000 each year. The mission of DSWOP is to improve the health, education, and welfare of Southwest Dallas County, with an emphasis on the neighborhoods of Oak Cliff and West Dallas.
