UNT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS AT WHITE COAT CEREMONY
The UNT Health Science Center faculty and staff formally welcome the 2005-2006 entering students at its Convocation and White Coat Ceremony Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
The ceremony will take place at Will Rogers Auditorium. This year’s guest speaker is David M. Richards, DO, former president of the health science center. A reception will follow the White Coat Ceremony on the health science center campus.
The White Coat Ceremony is a rite of passage for students entering the academic health community. During the ceremony, new medical, physician assistant, biomedical sciences and public health students are literally “coated” for the first time. The white coat they receive symbolizes the humanitarianism and integrity required of each individual entering a health-related profession. Students will also receive gifts signifying their entry into their respective professions.
This year’s ceremony will include 135 incoming students from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, 90 incoming students from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, 87 new students from the School of Public Health and 29 new students from the Physician Assistant Studies Program.
The UNT Health Science Center’s School of Public Health and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences have also agreed to accept students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The number of students who will participate in the White Coat Ceremony from Louisiana State University and Tulane University is still unknown.
Supporters of the Convocation and White Coat ceremony include the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Physician Assistant Studies, the School of Public Health and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
