YURVATI NAMED ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY AT THE HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER
Albert Yurvati, DO, has been named acting chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.
Dr. Yurvati, a professor in the Department of Surgery, is also a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. Internationally known as an expert in the inflammation response of cardiopulmonary bypass, Dr. Yurvati will also serve as vice chairman of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and chairman of the cardiothoracic discipline of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.
“Dr. Yurvati has been the complete academic surgeon over the years at TCOM,” said Marc B. Hahn, DO, dean of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the health science center. “He has excelled in clinical services, academics and scholarly research. With his solid background, hard working personality and dedication to excellence, I have all the confidence that he is up for the challenge of leading the Department of Surgery as its acting chair.”
His predecessor, Sam Buchanan, DO, associate professor in the Department of Surgery, has been a member of the faculty for over 20 years. Dr. Buchanan, a pioneer in the field of breast cancer treatment, will remain at the health science center as associate professor in the Department of Surgery and continue his clinical and academic services.
“Dr. Buchanan has been a strong leader in the Department of Surgery and a loyal member of this faculty for two decades,” Dr. Hahn said. “His hard work and energy have made him a leader in clinical service and education on this campus and for the profession. I appreciate the dedication he has for this institution and the support he has shown over the years.”
The Department of Surgery at the health science center provides state of the art clinical care for patients, an academic training environment for residents and students, and active research in the field of surgery.
