Family Safety

Help protect your kids online

With Family Safety, you decide how your kids experience the Internet. Limit searches, monitor and block or allow websites, and decide who your kids can communicate with in Windows Live Spaces, Messenger, or Hotmail.*
Overview
* The Family Safety Filter must be installed on each computer your children use. If the Filter is not installed, the safety settings cannot be enforced.

To each his own

Having each child log in to the PC using their own Windows account means they each get their own settings, and you get different reports and filters for each child.

Filter out the bad stuff

Web filtering helps you protect your kids from the online content you don't want them to see, with individualized settings for each child.

See what they're doing

Detailed activity reports show you the websites each child visited (or tried to visit), what programs they used, and how much time they spent on the computer.*

* Reports on programs and time spent are only available on qualifying operating systems.

Who's your new friend?

Built-in contact management lets you decide exactly who your kids can talk to in Windows Live Spaces, Messenger, and Hotmail.

Change settings online

Just go online to the Family Safety website to customize each child's safety settings, so it's easy to manage even when you're not home.
Anywhere access
Depending on how your computer is set up, you may see a few security messages before installation begins.
  1. Where you see a company or publisher listed in a security message, make sure the company name is Microsoft Corporation. If so, then it is safe to click Run, Continue, or Allow.
  2. The installer will open. Select the programs you want to install*, and then click Next.
*Previously installed Windows Live programs will also be updated if you don't have the latest versions installed yet.
  3. Sit back and relax, or do other things on your computer while you wait. Installation shouldn't take more than a few minutes on a broadband connection.
  4. When it's done, you'll find your new programs in the Windows Live folder on the Windows Start menu.

If your installation doesn’t start right away, check the system requirements, or click Try again.
Trying again downloads a standalone installer to your computer. This takes a little while, but may work better, depending on your connection settings.
