Honors College
This is your invitation to become part of a community of high-achieving scholars with academic and intellectual goals similar to your own.
The Honors College at the University of North Texas is committed to promoting academic excellence and fostering intellectual growth for talented and motivated students.
Honors students have access to honors classes and a wide array of special events and privileges. Classes and programming are designed to foster curiosity and help you build an intellectual foundation to achieve your educational goals, begin a career and engage in the learning experiences of a lifetime.
What academic opportunities await me in the Honors College?
As a member of the Honors College, you will be able to broaden your intellect in a supportive learning environment. In addition to your other classes, you may enroll in one or two honors classes each semester. Honors classes are smaller and allow more personal attention from professors. This atmosphere will allow you to take an active role in learning by participating in challenging projects, stimulating discussions and other academic activities.
The Honors College is open to all qualifying undergraduate students regardless of major, including those pursuing music or engineering degrees. You can pursue the Honors Recognition Award, the Honors Scholar Award or the Distinguished Honors Scholar Award. Students may enter the Honors College as incoming freshmen, continuing UNT students or transfer students.
Many honors courses satisfy UNT’s core course requirements and are taken in place of regular courses. The Honors College also offers opportunities for you to acquire research skills, engage in research with a faculty member and write an honors thesis with the guidance of a faculty mentor. You may present your work at UNT’s University Scholars Day, and at regional and national professional and honors conferences.
Do I qualify for admission to the Honors College?
All students must complete an Honors College admissions application. Additional requirements include:
High school graduates
- a score of at least 1200 on the critical reading and math portions of the SAT or 27 on the ACT (writing portions not required)
- consideration of grade point average, class rank and courses taken
A portfolio can be submitted for review if you do not meet all of these requirements. It should contain a statement of your academic goals, a list of your academic accomplishments, letters of support from teachers and counselors, and examples of your academic work.
You automatically qualify for admission to the Honors College if you are awarded a UNT Meritorious Scholarship, although an Honors College admissions application is still required.
Transfer and continuing students
- an overall GPA of at least 3.35 on at least 15 credits of college-level course work taken as a full-time student
- submission of college transcripts
What additional benefits and privileges would I have?
As an Honors College student, you will find many benefits and opportunities for enrichment beyond the classroom. You will have access to:
- priority registration for classes, allowing you to register before other undergraduate students
- lunches with professors and deans
- exclusive housing in Honors Hall, a residence for Honors College students
- free tickets to cultural events
- special library privileges
- trips to local museums and theaters
- study abroad opportunities for honors credit
- special Honors College academic counselors who will help you with academic and schedule planning each semester
- a number of scholarships awarded by the Honors College based on performance and participation in honors classes and activities
- informative sessions about graduate and professional school
When you graduate, you will be honored at a special reception and receive the Honors College Medallion to keep and wear at commencement. Your transcript will include a permanent record of Honors College participation and graduation.
How would I remain active in the Honors College?
Active membership requires completion of 6 honors credits per academic year and maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA for each semester and overall.
How do I apply?
Admission to the Honors College is competitive and requires a special application. You may also visit the Honors College office in Chilton Hall, Room 211, for more information. Admission to the Honors College does not constitute admission to UNT. Read a list of UNT application requirements.
