GRANT TITLE:
Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT): Individual Investigator Research Awards

GENERAL INFORMATION:
- This RFA is for innovative research proposals addressing critically important questions that will significantly advance knowledge of the causes, prevention, and/or treatment of cancer, with an award of up to $1 million annually for 4 years.
- A PI may submit only one application.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES:
- Funds may be used for salary, fringe benefits, research supplies, equipment, clinical costs and travel to scientific/technical meetings or collaborating institutions.
- PI must have MD, PhD, DrPH, DO, DVM or equivalent, must reside in Texas during the time of research that is the subject of the grant conducted
- Collaborations are permitted and encouraged and collaborators may or may not reside in Texas. Collaborators who do not reside in Texas are not eligible for receipt of CPRIT funds.
REVIEW CRITERIA:
- Applications that do not capture CPRIT’s reviewers’ attention from the Abstract (150 words) and Significance Statement (150 words) alone will not be considered for further review.
- Applications that pass the first review will be further reviewed using a two step process. The primary review will focus on scientific merit, relevance to cancer research, creativity, expertise, experience and accomplishment. The secondary review will focus on research environment, facilities, institutional support of the research team, vertebrate and human subject issues, budget and project duration.
- In an effort to improve the probability that submissions will pass the Abstract and Significance review UNTHSC’s Office of Strategic Research Initiatives (sri@hsc.unt.edu) will pre-review all junior faculty member’s Abstract and Significance statements for grantmanship issues.

September 15th 2009: Online application opens at 7am Central Time
October 1st 2009: Applications due to the UNTHSC Office of Grants and Contracts for Institutional Compliance Review
October 8th, 2009: Applications due by 3 pm Central Time, will be electronically submitted by the UNTHSC Office of Grants and Contracts

Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT): High-Impact/ High-Risk Research Awards

GENERAL INFORMATION:
- This RFA is for relatively short-term high-impact / high-risk projects that are innovative, developmental, or exploratory in nature targeting new avenues of cancer research, with an award of up to $200,000 over 24 months. Preliminary data is not required.
- The High-Impact / High-Risk Research Awards are expected to provide the foundation for individual or multiple-investigator awards upon completion.
- The State of Texas is allowing UNTHSC to submit two applications. The UNTHSC Research Office will collaborate with school Deans to determine the two applications with the greatest probability of funding by the state. Only these two applications will be submitted by UNTHSC under this RFA.

REVIEW CRITIERIA:
Applications will be reviewed by CPRIT review panels using a two-stage process:
- Peer Review: will focus on scientific merit, degree of relevance to cancer research, innovative potential of project, does the application lead to truly substantial advances in the field rather than add modest increments of insight, research plan and investigator
- Programmatic Review: will focus on research environment, facilities, institutional support of the research team, vertebrate and human subject issues, budget and project duration
