Pioneer of biometric recognition will speak at UNT April 10

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Dr. Anil K. Jain, a pioneer in the emerging field of biometric recognition, will speak at 11 a.m. April 10 (Friday) at the University of North Texas.

Jain, a distinguished professor of computer science at Michigan State University, develops tools for biometric recognition, which is the automatic recognition based on anatomic or behavioral characteristics such as fingerprints, faces, irises and voices.

Biometric recognition allows people to be identified by who they are, rather than by what ID they carry or what password they use. The field is not new, but increased concerns about homeland security, financial fraud and identify theft have spurred greater interest in recent years.

Jain's UNT speech will present an overview of biometric recognition, emerging applications and the growing research on fingerprint and palm print matching, fingerprint individuality, facial recognition and the matching of scars, marks and tattoos.

"We are delighted to have Dr. Anil Jain come to UNT and talk to our faculty and students about the pioneering work that he is doing to help address the growing need for faster and more accurate ways of determining the true identity of individuals," said Costas Tsatsoulis, dean of the College of Engineering.

The speech is at Discovery Park auditorium (B-155) and is open and free to the public. The speech will last about an hour, and Jain will take questions from the audience.

Jain's research interests include pattern recognition, computer vision and biometric recognition. He has received the K.S. Fu Prize and Guggenheim, Humboldt, IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement and IEEE Wallace-McDowell awards.
