DENTON (UNT), Texas -- International students at the University of North Texas will share their cultures with residents of Denton and Denton County, and interact with the local residents as new members of the Denton community, during World Fest on the Square Sept. 26 (Saturday).

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lawn of Denton's Courthouse on the Square, 110 W. Hickory St. Admission is free. UNT, with the coordinating efforts of the UNT-International office, is sponsoring World Fest with the City of Denton, Courthouse on the Square Museum, Denton County Historical Commission and the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Jennifer Roglà, programs coordinator for UNT-International Cooperation, said the day's activities will give Denton and Denton County residents "a taste of world cultures right here in their backyard."

"This is very much a family event that we will hope will  inspire both current community leaders to incorporate diversity into their everyday agendas and Denton's future generations to become global-minded individuals," Roglà said.

World Fest begins at 11 a.m. with a Parade of Nations around the Denton town square, beginning on the corner of Elm and Hickory streets. UNT's international students will wear  native costumes from their countries and carry their nations' flags. They will be led by UNT's African Ensemble drumming group.

An opening ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m. Speakers will include UNT President Gretchen M. Bataille; Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs; Jorge Urbina, president of the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and Enrique Hubbard Urrea, consul general of Mexico in Dallas.

Food booths and country/culture booths will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The countries that will be represented include China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Entertainment will begin at noon and continue until 3 p.m., and will include African and Pakistani drumming, Argentinian tango music and dance, Indian music and dances from India, Korea, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.
