NIMS is a system that improves response operations through the implementation of the preexisting Incident Command System (ICS) and the application of standardized procedures and a common language. This system promotes interoperability of cross-jurisdictional, statewide, and interstate regional departments coordinating a response during an event of any size.
It is important to become familiar with the ICS structure and the NIMS system to promote cohesiveness between any two or more jurisdictions or departments during a time of emergency. Below are the links to the FEMA Independent Study Program which will help staff become familiar with the NIMS and ICS systems.
