Summary

State law allows the UNT and UNT System's governing body to establish their holiday schedule. The holidays may be set on any days the Board chooses, but the number of holidays may not exceed the total number of fifteen (15) days. Listed below are the holiday schedules for Fiscal Year 2009 as approved by the Board of Regents. Please note that UNT System employees working at the UNT Dallas Campus will follow the holiday schedule for the UNT employees.

NOTE: This is a policy excerpt only. Please refer to the actual policy UNT Policy No. 1.4.5 when advising or making decisions, or contact the Records Area of Human Resources at 940/565-4249.

  • Only regular faculty and staff members are eligible for paid holidays.
  • Regular part-time staff and faculty receive the same holidays as full-time employees, on a basis proportionate to the rate provided to full-time employees.
  • A staff member can be required to work on a holiday, but shall be given alternate time off at a rate of one hour per hour worked, to be taken at a later date. The alternate time off must be taken during the 12-month period following the date of the holiday worked.
  • If a holiday occurs while a staff member is on sick leave or vacation leave, it will be counted as a holiday, and not as a leave.

Floating Holiday

An employee who receives vacation hours will also receive Floating Holiday hours.  The amount of hours received by an employee is based on their FTE, for example a 50% FTE (20 hours/week) will receive 4 hours of Floating Holiday leave.  Subsequent changes in FTE during the fiscal year will not result in a change in the amount of leave due to the employee for that fiscal year.  Additional points to keep in mind:

  • The use of Floating Holiday hours must be approved by the employee's supervisor prior to the absence.
  • Floating Holiday hours must be taken prior to the end of the fiscal year (August 31). Unused hours will not carry forward into the next fiscal year.
  • Floating Holiday hours balance at termination will become part of the employee's termination pay.
  • Floating Holiday hours are not subject to the same restriction as vacation leave. Floating holiday hours can be taken during an employee's probationary period.
  • Floating Holiday hours will be given to each newly hired, eligible employee in the fiscal year that floating holiday hours are included as part of the holiday schedule.
  • Floating Holiday hours may change from fiscal year to fiscal year based on the number of state holidays approved by the Texas Legislature and the holiday schedule approved by the Board of Regents. Therefore, some years may not include any Floating Holiday hours in the holiday schedule.
  • As with other types of leave (vacation, sick, comp time) floating holiday hours must be used before the employee is put on leave without pay or receives a non disciplinary dock.
  • Floating Holiday time off must be entered in Time and Labor for each employee with the new code FHD.
