UNT UNT Dallas holds graduate reception

DALLAS – A standing-room only crowd watched as 60 graduating seniors were honored at the University of North Texas UNT Dallas April 14. Many UNT Dallas students do not attend commencement ceremonies on the Denton campus, so the “graduate reception” is the closest thing they get to a graduation ceremony.

UNT Dallas Deputy Vice Chancellor Peter Johnstone placed the UNT Dallas stole over the graduates robes in a ceremony much like the hooding of doctoral graduates. The graduating class includes many who are the first in their families to get a college degree.

Johnstone, speaking on behalf of Vice Chancellor John Ellis Price who was in Austin, told graduates, “the most we can do is honor your commitments and your successes in a simple ceremony like this.

“You have finished the race and you deserve our commendation. While your path to receiving a degree may not have been easy, I hope you will keep in mind the words of Benjamin Franklin that ‘an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.’”

UNT Dallas is a satellite campus of the UNT in Denton. Now that the school’s enrollment reached 1,000 full-time equivalent students, it will become an independent, degree-granting institution.

The UNT UNT Dallas operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, the state’s fourth largest university, and is a component institution of the University of North Texas System. The Campus currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Campus plans to become freestanding by 2010 and will be named UNT Dallas, the city’s first and only public university.
