UNTHSC hosts Reynolds Annual Geriatric Update
Alzheimer's disease affects more than 5 million Americans. With the aging of the U.S. population, that number is expected to triple by 2050. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the UNT Health Science Center's Reynolds Geriatric Education and Training in Texas (GET-IT) program will host "Alzheimer's Disease: Implications for an Aging Society," to discuss new approaches to diagnose and treat the disease.
Topics and speakers include:
• Diagnosis and treatment approaches to Alzheimer's disease (AD) - Rachelle Doody, MD, PhD, professor of Neurology and Effie Marie Cain Chair in Alzheimer's Research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston
• The role of estrogen and other hormones in AD - Meharvan Singh, PhD, associate professor of Pharmacology and Neuroscience and assistant dean of Graduate Education and Research
• Neuropsychologic patterns in mild cognitive impairment and dementing disorders - James Hall, PhD, associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health
• Challenges to diagnosis and management of AD in diverse populations - Carlos Reyes Ortiz, MD, PhD, associate professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences
• Advanced care planning for patients with AD - Mark Sanders, DO, MPH, JD, associate professor of Family Medicine
• Ethical issues involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with AD - Roy Martin, DMin, assistant professor of Clinical Ethics
The program also includes an Alzheimer's patient case discussion moderated by Program Chair Janice Knebl, DO, MBA, chief of Geriatrics and professor of Internal Medicine.
The GET-IT program is addressing the national shortage of geriatricians by creating innovative and sustainable programs to strengthen geriatric training for physicians. GET-IT is funded by a four-year grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and the UNT Health Science Center.
The conference, designed for physicians and health care professionals, is Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. in Luibel Hall. Up to 6.5 continuing medical education credits are available.
