Research Areas

Bioenergy

The goal is to understand the principles underlying the structural and functional design of living systems, and develop the capability to model, predict, and engineer optimized enzymes, microorganisms  and plant feedstocks for the production of biofuels.  more

Structural Genomics

The BNL Biology Department is a partner in the New York Structural Genomics Research Consortium whose mission is to develop and use technology for high-throughput structural and functional studies of proteins.  more

DNA Damage & Repair

The goal of this program is to support research that will help determine health risks from exposures to low levels of radiation.   more

Biodefense & Disease

Research related to the basic understanding of microbiology, structural biology and immunology leading to the develop-ment of vaccines, therapeutics, and medical diagnostics important to national biodefense.  more

Facilities

X-ray Crystallography

Includes 6 beam lines and support scientists, for protein crystallography, producing the data for nearly half of the structures in the PDB. more

NASA Space Radiation Lab

NASA supported research facility for studying effects of space radiation more

UV-CD Fluorescence

Two beam lines at the NSLS that collect UV CD and Fluorescence spectroscopy data for identifying protein folds & protein-protein interactions. more

STEM

Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope that allows for accurate mass quantification of protein complexes.  more
