Samoa's Salani Surf Resort, "Gone"
Tidal Wave Destroys Renowned Surf Camp...
Right about now, Nick Shannon, a 35-year-old Australian surfer, is going about his life, changing the diapers of his 16-month-old son, and trying to come to grips with the complete destruction of his previous home at the Salani Surf Resort in Samoa. Most people don't know Shannon's name, but he is one of the many unsung heroes that saved lives during the recent tsunami. As was reported on this site and across the globe, the small, surf-laden island of Samoa was hammered by a deadly earthquake.. More >
Jumping Sharks off Malibu Put Surfers and Swimmers on Alert
Rare shots of White Shark are the Talk of the Town
By Ben MarcusWhite sharks aren't exactly uncommon along the Malibu coast although, like movie stars, the alpha predators are pretty good at staying out of sight, and are only occasionally seen and photographed. Now Los Angeles surfers, kayakers and ocean goers are on edge after local surf shop owner Randy Wright captured startling photos of a juvenile great white shark jumping completely out of the water. On October 3, Wright was kayaking off the coast of Malibu doing volunteer field research.. More >
Surfer Brings Relief Force Back to Indonesia
Another Disaster in Surfing Paradise Brings New Challenges
Matt George arrived back in Sumatra today. It' (TM)s been just over ten days since his last visit but the longtime surfer was compelled to take part in the relief efforts underway there after last week's devastating earthquake. ' I was barely off the ground and I already had recruits...They have.. More >

Is Florida's Other World Champ Ready for Another Run?
When it comes to title contenders, C.J. Hobgood is arguably the biggest surprise on this year's ASP World Tour. At the halfway mark it's Florida's "other" world champion who is quietly creeping his way back toward another one, and what's funny is hardly anyone's noticing. But can he really threaten Parko? Well, for what it's worth, stranger things have happened. But more importantly this solid season means C.J.'s mid-career slump seems well behind him now. After winning his title during the abbreviated season of 2001 C.J. hit a pretty rough patch, finishing between 15th and 20th for four out of the next five years. But he's been steadily climbing of late. Finishing 11th in 2007, 5th in 2008. Now, he's in the lofty runner up spot, poised to make a run should Parko decide to stumble (totally possible). Certainly some of the credit goes to his coach Chris Gallagher, a former ASP World Tour surfer from California who has helped C.J. and his brother Damien get back to their dominating ways. Now if Ceej can just find the winners circle like he did at Mundaka last year things could get interesting again.
