Located 400 km (640 mi) north of mainland Europe in the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is home to some of the northernmost settlements on Earth. Long known for whaling and mining, today the islands are developing a niche among tourists looking to experience life in one of the planet’s most extreme locations. Svalbard also drew the attention of the Google Maps team, who sent a Street View crew to explore a portion of these islands at the northern edge of the world – the furthest north Street View has ever ventured!

A few years ago we took a detailed look at Canada’s Grand Railway Hotels (parts 1, 2, 3). To look at things from the opposite perspective, there are a surprising number of train carriages around the world which serve as hotels. Perhaps the largest collection of these is the Red Caboose Motel in Strasburg,  Pennsylvania.

To the south-east of Austin, Texas, there is a brand new motor racing track called the Circuit of the Americas, being used this weekend for its inaugural event – the Formula One United States Grand Prix. Svalbard

While 60 percent of Svalbard is covered in ice, that still didn’t stop the Street View team from exploring the stark beauty of the islands.
