FOOTBALL: THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE GAME
Football season is in full swing and it is time to celebrate with “Football: The Science Behind the Game,” a 3,000 square foot traveling exhibit that explores the science, technology and history of the game, opening Sept. 20 – Jan. 4, 2010 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge.
Organized into zones that relate directly to the game, the exhibit encourages hands-on participation from beginning to end. If you think you are as strong as a lineman, try the “Grip Tester.” Rotate through the “Passing Game Zone” and focus on the stability of a well thrown spiral by experimenting with the “Bicycle Wheel Gyro” or take a turn in the “Passing Cage.” Wind down in the “History Zone,” where the beginnings of the game are explored. Join the tailgate party in progress over in the “Football and Society Zone.” Check out the early versions of football board games on display.
Check out the zones that illustrate key concepts like collisions, peripheral vision, reaction time, trajectories and balance. Audio and video kiosks also help tell the story behind America’s obsession with football.
All you armchair quarterbacks…drop your remote and bring all your big and little fans to the American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, and experience “Football: The Science Behind The Game.”
