It’s been said that adversity breeds character, and whether Bostonians have suffered most at the hands of King George, Mother Nature or the Yankees, they’ve responded to all of the above by building a city that can take all comers. Boston is a town with one foot in its historical past and one foot in the youth culture of its hordes of students. While time has seen Boston change from a small Puritan colony to a large and diverse cultural hotbed, the spunky upstart vibe has never waned, even if it’s now more likely to generate extreme sports fanaticism than revolutionary wars.
Why You Should Visit
Small, dense and walkable, Boston packs old-world character and new world attractions into an easily accessible space. It’s difficult to name a destination more rewarding for history buffs, where The Freedom Trail -- a red brick path snaking through 2.5 miles of downtown -- stops at 16 historical sites like the site of the Boston Massacre and the Paul Revere House. Ethnic neighborhoods -- like the Italian North End and Chinatown -- make for good eats and cultural exploration, and when the walking makes you thirsty you can stop for the Samuel Adams brewery tour. Fenway Park is a shrine and absolute must-see for sports fans (just be sure your girlfriend leaves the Jeter jersey at home), while those with more of a taste for the quirky and ironic will get a charge out of the Museum of Bad Art, which plumbs the most painful and amusing depths of artistic failure.
Why You Should Live Here
You'll want to move to Boston not for the real estate prices or weather, which are both harsh, but rather for the small, real neighborhoods that have developed their charm over decades or even centuries. The absurd number of colleges and students make for a diverse and energetic indie music scene and vibrant nightlife, even if some consider the bar crowds to be a little on the young side. The women outnumber the men by an unusually wide margin, and more of them are highly educated. Boston’s packed with jobs for young professionals and big city cultural institutions, but it’s small and manageable with a good public transit system. Great skiing, snowboarding and beaches are a short drive away, and fans couldn’t ask for a town more obsessed with sports, nor a collection of teams that puts on a better show. There’s a reason they call the place Titletown.
