Here's the latest episode in a series of mini-docs featuring a behind the scenes look at Team Avalanche's Just Cause 2. This latest update goes undercover on the island of Panau.

Panau is a vast playground for players, stretching out over 1000 square kilometres (400 square miles), packed with dense jungle, arctic peaks, arid deserts and sun-bleached beaches, each populated with a variety of settlements in which to cause chaos. From ski resorts to submarine bases, towns and villages to a huge capital city, Panau is an island rich in variety. Each climate zone has its own unique weather system with dense snow falls creating picture postcard peaks and tropical thunder storms lighting up the night sky.

As Rico Rodriguez, the Agency’s most powerful weapon, players must take on the island and its military regime to track down Rico’s former boss and mentor, Tom Sheldon, who has gone rogue in Panau with millions in Agency cash and secrets. Using a unique grapple and parachute combination, there is no vertical limit as the air becomes your playground: grapple a passing plane in flight, hijack helicopters or BASE jump from the tallest buildings or mountains. Just Cause 2 offers players the freedom to tackle missions the way they choose and with over 100 vehicles and countless upgrades and collectibles, the choices are limitless.

Aion Review @ IGN
IGN has put up its review of Aion, giving NCsoft's MMORPG a final score of 8.5. Aion did very well in the areas of presentation, graphics and gameplay, but lost some points for sound and lasting appeal. The lasting appeal bit is definitely a hurdle for MMOs. Who wants to play the same starter zone over and over again? Ugh. But even worse than Aion would be playing it over in Champions Online (*pew*). I think I will present EverQuest II with "The Golden Starter Zone Award".

Star Trek Online Interview

To boldly find out more about Cryptic's Star Trek Online, Eurogamer.net chats with executive producer Craig Zinkievich. Want to be a Klingon? No problema...

We plan on shipping with the ability to play as Federation and play on the Klingon side. The Klingon gameplay is going to be drastically different to the Federation gameplay. It's going to be a lot more focused on PvP; their advancement is a little bit different - it is not a full-on story-driven game like the Federation.

However, you will have to unlock Klingon gameplay, which will apparently take several hours. Sounds pretty cool either way! While on the topic of STO, the official site has updates on ships, crew, and bridge officers.

They talk about some of the things that have been fixed and changed since release, and what makes WAR work. I dunno, I just couldn't get into Warhammer Online. Heyyyy, TGIF! /Stretch. Did I ever sleep in. I can't decide which time zone I'm in. Which one's the coolest? I'm thinking GMT or EST. Usually I bounce between the two, PST is for the young'uns, and both Mountain and CET are stupid. Yeah, exciting. I woke up today wondering what happened to the Bionic Woman (the remake). I kind of dug it, alas it took me a year to realize it was cancelled.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Mercenary Wars Maps Revealed
Here's a look at the challenge maps which will be featured in the upcoming Online Military FPS, Mercenary Wars. From a museum filled with treasures to an overthrown Mosque, to a restaurant with secret meeting rooms...

Sweden

Although based in North America, the International Hessian Order (IHO) has a secondary base in Sweden. This country initially provided protection for the IHO in exchange for a percentage of natural resources that the organization recovered from their battles. After a short time, the IHO overthrew the Swedish government, seized their military assets and established the formerly peaceful country as their secondary base when away from their North American headquarters.

The Museum

This public-use facility houses a variety of valuable treasures ranging from the time of the Dinosaurs to the time of the Pharaohs and even more modern exhibits. Located in Africa, it is the main stronghold of the Continental African Mercenary League. This organization uses this once-popular facility as both a training camp and also as the main location for strategic planning purposes.

Mosque

This former Mosque has been transformed into a training arena by the Medjay Mercenary Unit. This group of Middle Eastern Mercenaries decided to over-throw the peaceful monarch and replaced it with their “kill for hire” rule of law. This building allows for a multitude of different fighting scenarios that helps the Medjay prepare for battle against their enemies.

The Restaurant

This dining establishment is located in the middle of the territory belonging to United Asian Front (UAF). Members of this Asian-based mercenary group frequented this restaurant to conduct business with a variety of arms dealers and other questionable suppliers. The restaurant offers multiple rooms which this organization used for a variety of uses in its heyday and now serves as a good place to confront their enemies when they are on the UAF’s home turf.

The Factory

This building is the main facility for the Mercenarios Unidad del Americas (M.U.A.) and acts as their most important logistical component in their many businesses. Since their territory ranged throughout the entire South American region, this large facility is strategically located to be able to supply members of this organization quickly with arms and other resources needed to push back their rivals.

Other maps will be added throughout the Closed Beta process.

Left 4 Dead 2's Scavenge Mode: Hands-On
IGN provides a hands-on look at the newly announced Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge Mode. Here's the general idea:

At the start both teams still join up with infected or survivor sides, but from there on out everything's different. The maps are small, pulled from sections of Left 4 Dead 2's campaigns. In all there will be six maps, with two being lifted from the as of yet unrevealed fourth campaign. Since they're just small sections of the maps, there isn't all that much space to travel, which works with the game type's capture and return mechanics.

The focal point of each match is a generator. The goal of the survivors is to snag as many fuel canisters, visible through walls and highlighted in white, as possible from around the map and dump them into the generator. Each of the 16 total fuel pickups added put 20 more seconds on a clock that starts at 1 minute, 20 seconds. The catch is in addition to common zombies running around, the player-controlled boss infected are trying to choke, slash, and squish you to death. Does your team try and run as quickly as possible to grab and return cans, or do you stick together and make sure every return is a success? Is that even possible with boomers puking all over everything?

Cities XL Launches in Europe
Monte Cristo's city-building game, Cities XL, has officially launched in Europe today, with its US showing coming tomorrow. In Euroville the title bears a suggested retail price of £29.99.

In the solo mode, you can build from a selection of over 500 buildings on real-world maps. In the online mode, you can collaborate to build famous landmarks, trade with other players, and get in-game tycoon games, new buildings, and many more downloads.

In the main game you build up your city in resplendent 3D from a selection of over 500 buildings, whilst trying to keep your population happy – in the beta players have managed to get up to 17,000,000 inhabitants in one city! You have to take account of pollution, traffic, trade and class to build that perfect city.

Cities are built on real-world 3D maps (such as Mount St Helens), and the game really reflects that scale, letting you zoom out to a Google Earth perspective or right into street level to watch your inhabitants going about their day.

If you want, you can go online and build your city on a planet with up to 10,000 other cities. Here you can trade excess resources, chat with friends, specialize your city to corner your local market, or build megastructures that aren’t available in the single-player game.

Left 4 Dead 2 Scavenge Mode Announced
Valve has announced "Scavenge", the fourth game mode to be included in Left 4 Dead 2. Media coming up!

Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.

On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles. Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaws, frying pans, axes, baseball bats, and more.

L4D2 also introduces the AI Director 2.0, adding the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom-fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Finally, with new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original, featuring more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, new Survival maps, and a brand new competitive mode all available at launch.
