Role reversal

10-7-09, 11:40 p.m. This is Cincinnati-Baltimore but it’s not Bengals-Ravens. This has always been in the Marvin Lewis era the high-voltage Bengals offense pitted against the 60-minutes-of-hell Ravens defense. But on Sunday in Baltimore in the AFC North showdown for first place, it is the Ravens that have the top five offense at No. 3. It is the Ravens that have a young strong-armed quarterback in the person of Joe Flacco that flings the long ball with such efficacy it puts the fear of “striking up the band” in Lewis, the old Ravens defensive coordinator that dreads the long ball. And it is the Bengals that have a defense (17th) ranked higher than its offense (No. 21) and has made sure they arrive at M&T Bank Stadium at 3-1. It is the Bengals hearing defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer tell them this week that the best defense is going to win this game and the Bengals believing it.  Read More...

  • Education in the slot

10-7-09, 6:30 p.m. Wide receiver Andre Caldwell gave the Bengals a lift twice Wednesday. First, he practiced after leaving Sunday’s game in the fourth quarter with an injured shoulder. Second, he responded to some of the things that allowed the Browns...

  • Grinding for the community

  • J.P. standing for 'Just a pro'

10-6-09, 8:30 p.m. Fellow tight end Tony Stewart, a good friend of J.P. Foschi, still was amazed. Foschi, not even a Bengal for two months, had been the team’s leading receiver in the team's latest win with 44 yards on a day Chad Ochocinco had two...

Q (10/1/09): I know you talked about the no-huddle offense and how it’s not good for the running game, but what if we run the no-huddle at the beginning of the game, maybe first half, and get a lead on a team, then come out second half and run it down their throats.
--Adam C., Clayton, OH
A: I didn’t talk about the no-huddle offense. A power much higher did. Bob Bratkowski, who we’d much rather listen to than me since he’s the guy calling the plays. Bratkowski seemed to suggest that you can’t do both. If you’re committed to the run, you have to run and the no-huddle isn’t geared for that. But, yeah, I see your point. What would be wrong with opening up in a two-minute drill? Read More

"We got plenty of props for beating the Steelers, then we turn around and struggle against a team we should have put away in the first half. The Bengals have yet to put together a game in all three phases (defense, offense and special teams). Once we see a game where Carson has a baseball cap on, sipping Gatorade and showing off photos of his twins in the 4th quarter then other people around the NFL will be convinced we are a playoff team. On paper this team should be putting up 35 points a game at least."
