TGIF: This Game is Free #10 -- Legend of the Red Dragon

By Ryan Scott | PC Articles | Oct 9, 2009 6:45 PM | Comment

In the days before the trusty World Wide Web, computer enthusiasts dialed into local bulletin board systems to download software and leave messages for other users. The BBS was a precursor to the modern Internet in many ways, and back when we fired up our 2400-baud modems to browse these text-heavy (with the occasional ANSI graphic) hobbyist systems, we were oftentimes presented with "door games" -- simple little time-wasters that presented a finite array of activities to carry out, often involving a competition with other users on the same BBS. One of the most fondly remembered such games -- one that's still under semi-active development today -- was a surprisingly robust text-based role-playing game called Legend of the Red Dragon. Mark Rein <3s Project Natal

By Tyler Barber | Xbox 360 News | Oct 9, 2009 2:11 PM | Comment

In an interview with UK's Official Xbox Magazine, Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein may have led some readers to believe that all future Epic games will feature some form of Natal controls. In the interview, Rein was boasting that the Unreal Engine 3 will be the "economic engine of Natal," adding that the new Microsoft studio that's heading up Natal game development is using Unreal Engine 3. But where Rein threw some off-track was with his hypothetical comment that, "I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support."

Turns out this was not quite what he meant to say. Read on. Read More »

Help! Make The Beatles' DLC a Reality

By Tyler Barber | Xbox 360 News | Oct 9, 2009 11:29 AM | Comment

In August the New York Times published a lengthy article covering The Beatles' album re-releases and The Beatles: Rock Band. In the piece, a small mention was made that three downloadable albums, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abby Road and Rubber Soul, would be available for download post-launch. The rest of The Beatles' catalog was presumed to follow, but today that certainty seems less so. Read More »

Hands-on: Spittin', Chargin', and Face-Ridin' in Left 4 Dead 2.

By Gerald Villoria | Xbox 360 Previews | Oct 8, 2009 3:06 PM | Comment

With Left 4 Dead 2, Valve has had to challenge itself to create enough original, interesting content to justify this release as a true sequel. In a recent hands-on multiplayer event, I had the chance to play one of Left 4 Dead 2's new multiplayer modes, Scavenger, and to check out some of the new Infected types that will be making life that much harder for the sequel's beleaguered survivors. L4D2 Makes Nice Down Under

By Tyler Barber | Xbox 360 News | Oct 8, 2009 2:28 PM | Comment

Last month the Office of Film and Literature Classification denied Left 4 Dead 2 a rating, effectively banning the game from Australia. In response, Valve submitted an edited version of the game to the OFLC, which has been granted a modified 15+ rating (via Edge Online).

According to the OFLC's report, the edited version addressed the organization's concerns over "depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment" by removing them from the game. Another aspect of the game's first rating, the melee weapons, remain in the edited version. Read More »

Gaymer Survey: The Sequel

By Tyler Barber | News | Oct 8, 2009 12:13 PM | Comment

Back in 2007 Jason Rockwood made the rounds on the Internet when he released his study to highlight the existence of gay gamers. Today, Full Sail masters student Paul Nowak is asking for participants in a similar study that aims to uncover how homosexual material in games makes players feel (Bully, Fable and Fable II and Mass Effect were among the examples given), as well as how such content could drive purchasing decisions (via Joystiq).

The survey also seeks to find any correlations between sexuality and preferred content and genres. For example, participants are asked what genres they play most, in what settings and who they play with (against other players or NPCs). The survey is brief, and is open to all sexual orientations. Video Game Bromances

By Justin Massoud | Humor | Oct 8, 2009 9:00 AM | Comment

The bromance: a concept that celebrates the importance of manly activities between male friends and how taking part in said activities is perfectly OK. Sure, the phrase itself may be a little worn-out thanks to crappy pseudo-reality TV shows and entertainment news, but before the term was arbitrarily attached to movies, celebrities, and pop culture in general in a vain attempt at being "hip," videogames were doing it with style and aplomb.

Indeed, the following pixel pairs had a "Bro Code" before the term even existed. Read More »
