Named the #1 Micropolitan city in Texas by Polycom Corp., Lufkin is the largest community between Houston to the South and Tyler to the North and serves a broad service area for jobs, education, entertainment, governmental services, medical services, and retail shopping. This creates a daytime population estimated at over 100,000 and a service sector to support this size of community.

Local officials and Lockheed Martin employees break ground on the company's new section at their Lufkin operations, located off North John Redditt Drive, Thursday afternoon. It was quite the event Thursday afternoon as congressmen, judges, city council members and company executives alike came together to celebrate the groundbreaking on a new section of the facility which will essentially double the size of the plant.  Read more about it in the Lufkin Daily News.  Watch the video.

The new boat ramps at Cassels-Boykin Park are in the lake!  Drewery Construction has placed two ramps in the lake, one two lane ramp and a three lane ramp.  The ramps were poured on dry land and slid into the lake.  This is one of the first times this procedure has been successfully preformed.  We have a high definition video of five bulldozers and assorted other pieces of heavy equipment pushing the ramp into the lake.  Click on the "HD" button at the bottom of the player to play the video in HD.  We also have a Windows Media version in standard definition.

Phase one of the  new facility is scheduled  to be completed in time to host Dr. Bill Shelton's Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure scheduled on May 9.

The City of Lufkin plans to purchase Kurth Lake and AbitibiBowater's 13 water wells for $15 million — a move Lufkin Mayor Jack Gorden called "the single largest event to secure the future of Lufkin."

City officials in late January signed a letter of intent to obtain the company's rights to both ground and surface water in Angelina County. The company shuttered its Lufkin paper mill in 2003.

In recent years, water has become a highly sought-after commodity across the state. City officials say the purchase of AbitibiBowater's water rights would greatly benefit Lufkin.

"It puts the city in one of the most envious positions in the state," said City Manager Paul Parker.  Read more about it in the Lufkin Daily News.

At the first First Friday Luncheon of the year, Mayor Jack Gorden and Angelina County Judge Wes Suiter each gave an address on the state of the city and the county at Crown Colony Country Club Friday afternoon.
The luncheon, hosted by the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, was a chance for local officials and business leaders to hear what's in store for 2009.  Watch the video and read more about it in the Lufkin Daily News.

Fifty new jobs will soon be available to area residents with a company that “stretches” around the world. Lufkin Mayor Jack Gorden announced at First Friday that PG Films, LLC is buying the “shell building” owned by the Lufkin/Angelina County Economic Development Partnership (an entirely privately funded county- wide economic development organization), to house its manufacturing business. The multi-national company produces plastic stretch and shrink wrap for the shipping-logistics industry. They have facilities in San Diego, California and Queretaro, Mexico.

Delighted to include the announcement in his annual State of the City Address, the Mayor said, “Landing PG Films was the culmination of a year’s worth of intense work by a lot of people in our City who are dedicated to creating new jobs. Three years ago our citizens voted to designate 1/8 of each penny from our sales tax to economic development. That decision helped us provide the incentives to ‘land’ this dynamic company.”

           Local Plant to Reopen

The Lufkin 4B Corporation and the Lufkin / Angelina County Economic Development Partnership announced June 12 the addition of a large National and International player in the food processing industry to Lufkin.

With the leadership and assistance of the City of Lufkin, Angelina County, and A
ngelina College in providing incentives to bring the project to fruition, Loggins Culinary, LLC , a woman owned company, announces the opening of a major production operation which will be located in the facility recently vacated by Armour Eckrich Inc.

Lufkin City Manager, Paul Parker stated, “We are pleased to have an established East Texas company with a reputation of being a stable and community oriented business that will greatly enhance the local economy”

Mayor Jack Gorden stated, ““This is a success story for our entire community. Not only does it take an idled and vacant commercial facility and create new jobs, it does it with a new 21st century process that should fare well for the long run. We need to take this opportunity to thank the many local people that work tirelessly to improve our economy.”   We have a video of the 4B Corporation meeting and the announcementRead more about it.
