The new boat ramps at Cassels-Boykin
Park are in the lake! Drewery Construction has placed two
ramps in the lake, one two lane ramp and a three lane ramp.
The ramps were poured on dry land and slid into the lake. This
is one of the first times this procedure has been successfully
preformed. We have a
high definition video of five bulldozers and assorted other
pieces of heavy equipment pushing the ramp into the lake.
Click on the "HD" button at the bottom of the player to play the
video in HD. We also have a Windows Media version
in standard definition.
Phase one of the new facility is scheduled
to be completed in time to host
Dr. Bill Shelton's Totally
Awesome Fishing Adventure scheduled on May 9. |

The
City of Lufkin plans to purchase Kurth Lake and
AbitibiBowater's 13 water wells for $15 million — a move
Lufkin Mayor Jack Gorden called "the single largest
event to secure the future of Lufkin."
City officials in late January signed a letter of intent
to obtain the company's rights to both ground and
surface water in Angelina County. The company shuttered
its Lufkin paper mill in 2003.
In recent years, water has become a highly sought-after
commodity across the state. City officials say the
purchase of AbitibiBowater's water rights would greatly
benefit Lufkin.
"It puts the city in one of the most envious positions
in the state," said City Manager Paul Parker. Read
more about it in the
Lufkin Daily News.

Fifty
new jobs will soon be available to area residents with a company
that “stretches” around the world. Lufkin Mayor Jack Gorden
announced at First Friday that PG Films, LLC is buying the
“shell building” owned by the Lufkin/Angelina County Economic
Development Partnership (an entirely privately funded county-
wide economic development organization), to house its
manufacturing business. The multi-national company produces
plastic stretch and shrink wrap for the shipping-logistics
industry. They have facilities in San Diego, California and
Queretaro, Mexico.
Delighted to include the announcement in his annual State of the
City Address, the Mayor said, “Landing PG Films was the
culmination of a year’s worth of intense work by a lot of people
in our City who are dedicated to creating new jobs. Three years
ago our citizens voted to designate 1/8 of each penny from our
sales tax to economic development. That decision helped us
provide the incentives to ‘land’ this dynamic company.”
