Coal/Uranium Mining
The Surface Mining and Reclamation Division contains three Inspection Work Units, one located in Austin and the other located in Tyler providing close proximity to coal mining operations. The third is located in Corpus Christi and inspects uranium exploration operations. Throughout the exploration, mining, and reclamation process, on-site compliance inspections are conducted on a regular, but unannounced schedule, as required by the Regulations.
Complaints by citizens regarding exploration or mining operations filed with the Division are investigated promptly and thoroughly. On-site examination of complaints are scheduled with the citizen and investigations are performed to determine if reported problems are related to exploration or mining activities. A citizen may request that their identity be kept confidential.
