Alternatives Used in the Bathroom
Aerosol Sprays:
- Use non-aerosol deodorants and hair sprays.
- Use setting lotion or gets.
- Use brush and shaving soaps.
- Purchase other necessary products in non-aerosol containers such as pump spray bottles.
- Produce an effective hair gel by dissolving 1⁄2 to 1 teaspoon of unflavored gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated, and use as you would a purchased gel.
- For hair spray, chop one lemon (or 1 orange for dry hair). Place in a pot and cover with 2 cups of hot water. Boil until only half remains. Cool and strain. Add more water if needed. Refrigerate in a spray bottle.
- Use a solution of baking soda and water, or sprinkle baking soda around rim. Scrub with toilet brush as needed.
- Mix hot water, few tbsp. Borax and 1/8 tsp. “Lifeline”. Use pumice.
- Use 1⁄2 cup Borax to 1 gallon how water.
- Baking soda and vinegar.
- Make a paste of Borax and lemon juice. Let sit for 2 hours, then scrub.
- For tough lime bowl deposits above the water line: line the bowl with paper towels and pour vinegar over the towels to get them wet. Add vinegar to keep the paper towels moist until the deposits dissolve, take paper towels out, then scrub with a toilet bowl brush.
- Mix Borax and vegetable soap with hot water.
- To clean grout, combine 3 cups baking soda and 1 cup warm water and scrub into the grout; rinse well with water.
- Measure 1⁄4 cup baking soda, 1⁄2 cup white vinegar, and 1 cup of ammonia into a bucket. Add 1 gallon of warm water and stir until the baking soda dissolves.
- For ring around the tub: apply vinegar full strength to a sponge and rub, then follow up with baking soda and water.
- Rub area with half a lemon dipped in Borax, rinse and dry with soft cloth.
- Pour full-strength vinegar in the track of your sliding glass shower doors, let stand, and then rinse well. Ventilate well.
- For soapy buildup on chrome bathroom fixtures: Pour undiluted white vinegar on them and let it remain for about five minutes before you rinse well. For hard-to-remove stains, cover the stain with a tissue and spray with vinegar so that it remains moist for a longer soak, then apply “elbow grease”, rinse well and polish dry.
- For lime deposits: soak shower heads or faucet parts in vinegar overnight to remove hard-water buildup.
